The number five was not only special this year tothe Pittsburgh Steelers, it was also special to Mike Levyand the photo staff at The Plain Dealer.

Just as the Steelers won their fifth Super Bowlchampionship in February, Levy, a staff photographerat the Cleveland paper, added his fifth Photographer ofthe Year title after being named the state's top shooter atthe 55th Ohio News Photographers AssociationPictures of the Year competition.

The photo staff at the Cleveland newspaper notonly captured three of the four places in thePhotographer of the Year category (Gus Chan placedthird and Dale Omori received an Award ofExcellence), they were named the best photographystaff in the over 100,000 circulation category for thesixth consecutive year.

The paper swept the three top spots in last year'scontest.

Individually, their staff won 35 of the 90 awardsgiven in the14 categories they competed in, includingseven first place awards. Andrea Levy renewed herindividual domination of the Issue Illustration categoryby collecting all five places awarded in the category.

"What's great about Mike and the entire PD pho-tography staff," explained Plain Dealer DOP BillGugliotta, "is that, even though most of them are mid-career professionals, they still get excited about pic-tures and are still growing as photojournalists. We'revery proud of Mike and the entire photography and pic-ture editing staff."

"For Mike to win the POY a fifth time (his previ-ous wins came in 1991, 1998, 2000, 2001) is a great

accomplishment and well-deserved," continuedGugliotta. "We're very lucky to have Mike at the PlainDealer. His photography resonates with readersbecause of it's powerful emotional appeal. Mike's pic-tures are never dull or routine and he always finds away to make a picture thatsurprises you. It's hard tofeel indifferent about hispictures; there's usuallysomething there that'sevocative and hits you inthe gut"

Free lance photogra-pher and Kent StateUniversity graduate GregRuffing finished second toLevy in the POY category. It was the second timeRuffing was the POY run-ner-up, the last time beingin 2003.

Kent State University Press photographer GaryHarwood took home the James R. Gordon OhioUnderstanding Award for his entry "Growing Season:Life of a Migrant Community"

Mike Levy's first place General News winner"Fallen Soldier" was named Best of Show.

124 photographers from across the state submitted1,937 entries in this year's competition. 49 photogra-phers (an increase of 15 from last year) entered thePOY competition.

The contest, which rewards the best in news pho-tography from around the state, was held at Taylor Hallon the campus of Kent State University. Judges for thecontest were Jeanie Adams-Smith, Associate Professorof Photojournalism at Western Kentucky University,Cliff Schiappa, Associated Press Regional Photo Editorfor the Midwest Region based in Kansas City, Missouriand Brian Peterson, a staff photographer and photocoach for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The judges were impressed not only the quality ofthe work entered, but the number of entries in the com-petition. "The overall quality is as good as anything I'veseen," said Adams-Smith. "The level of the work wasextraordinarily high," continued Schiappa. "They (thephotographers) are a talented bunch." On a negativenote, all three were extremely critical of the lack ofcomplete captions on many of the entries, some thatfailed to place due lack of information such as names."There is no excuse for not having that basic informa-tion," said Adams-Smith.

All three agreed it was difficult trying to decidebetween the very high caliber of the entries in severalcategories, especially general news ("Ohio can shootsome news", said Adams-Smith) and sports action("There are dozens of shots we rejected that I wouldlove to have on a daily basis," exclaimed Schiappa.

All three were impressed with the quali-ty of the entries in the spot news under cate-gory. "These are some great photos for smallpapers," said Peterson.

Levy is a graduate of Ohio Universitywho joined the PD staff in 1991. His threestories, 9 singles portfolio was singled out, according to the judges, “for great story-telling, good subjects that had more meat tothe photos, and a visual sophistication.”

Individually, Levy collected first andthird place awards in the general news cate-gory, second place in the assigned featurecategory, first place in the feature picture, second and third place awards in news picturestory and a award of excellence in the sportsaction category.

The judges all agreed that Harwood'sOhio Understanding entry titled "GrowingSeason: The Life of a Migrant Community"was an amazing piece of work. "Everythingabout this essay is perfect," said Adam-Smith, "and it is a terrific example of findingstories about Ohio and covering them."

Harwood was granted access to the 130agricultural migrant camps in the Hartville,Ohio area in 2001 and he spent the next fiveyears documenting the broad legal, economicand social realities of migrant issues.

"I was pleased when I heard I had wonthe Ohio Understanding Award," saidHarwood. "It is the result you hope for whenyou spend five years on one story. It is verycompetitive with many talented photogra-phers entering powerful stories," continuedHarwood, "I am excited about this opportuni-ty and honored to have won this award."

Andrea Levy's sweep of the top fiveplaces in the Issue Illustration categorypushed her win streak to 22 of the last 23places in the category. The judges praised herwork for taking the issues and pushing herwork to illustrate them beyond normalimages.
