Design Story: Classic Seating with Comfortable ContoursCharles Eames famously said “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” With the molded plastic, fiberglass, and wood shell chairs—as well as the wire chair—the Eameses have created a universal response to what everyone wants from a chair: a simple, gracious form that fits any body and every place. Boasting the same covetable striations and upholstery options that have attracted avid vintage collectors for decades, the newly reformulated fiberglass uses monomer- and VOC-free resin and glue, a molding-process that all but eliminates hazardous airborne compounds, and is fully recyclable through Herman Miller’s Take Back program.

Our DfE Protocol goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product designs in four key areas:• Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs—

What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?

• Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?

• Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?

• LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the entire life cycle?

Material ContentComponents for the Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs are constructed from fiberglass, steel, wood, textile, and foam.

Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs with wood are up to 98-99 percent recyclable based on availability of recycling facilities. Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs without wood are up to 98-99 percent recyclable based on availability of recycling facilities. Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs upholstered with wood are up to 82-87 percent recyclable based on availability of recycling facilities. Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs upholstered without wood are up to 85-88 percent recyclable based on availability of recycling facilities.

Eames Molded Fiberglass Chairs with wood are comprised of 10-15-percent recycled materials. Herman Miller complies with the Federal Trade commission’s Part 260 Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims.

• Steel components contain approximately 37 percent recycled content and are 100 percent recyclable.

• Most metal components have a trivalent chrome finish that emits negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

• Plastic components are identified with an ASTM recycling code whenever possible, to aid in returning these materials to the recycling stream.

• Returnable Packaging—Packaging materials include corrugated cardboard and a polyethylene plastic bag. These materials are part of a closed-loop recycling system, meaning they can be recycled repeatedly.– Whenever possible, shipments between

Herman Miller and its suppliers include the use of pallets and other returnable packaging to minimize waste.

– On large North American orders, disposable packaging can be replaced with reusable shipping blankets.

The Herman Miller Shell Chair Take Back ProgramLike the countless fiberglass shells that have been beloved for generations by avid Eames collectors and design enthusiasts, we expect our newly formulated Eames Molded Fiberglass Shell Chair to endure for years to come. However, in the off chance your Molded Fiberglass Shell is compromised or you’re just ready to recycle it, Herman Miller’s Take Back program offers an environmentally sound means for doing it. Customers can choose to keep their preexisting base and order a replacement shell, or send the entire chair back for recycling. Once the shells are sent back to our facilities, the bases, shock mounts, and upholstery will be removed, and the shells will be placed in an available recycle container. This is the same container shared by the production line. Once the container is full of shells, it is returned to the blast mold recycler, who then grinds the shell chairs down to a fine powder to be reused in road construction. Eligible ChairsAll Fiberglass Chairs (including upholstered versions) produced by Herman Miller after January 2014, are eligible for the Take Back Program. How the Program Works1.
