LAST WEEK (Old Dominion) LAST WEEK (Old Dominion) (Old Dominion 31, Georgetown 10 - Norfolk, Va.) Redshirt sophomore quarterback Thomas DeMarco was down right scary Halloween evening as the Monarch quarterback ran for 144 yards along with three touchdowns to help ODU improve to 7-2 on the year in a 31-10 victory over Georgetown. The Monarchs, who have won a season best four-in-a-row now, improve to 7-2 on the year and hold Georgetown winless at 0-8. The outcome was never in doubt as the Monarchs scored on their opening drive for the seventh time this season and established a 17-0 lead by the end of the fi rst quarter. DeMarco fi nished the night with 144 yards and completing six of his 11 passes with one interception. Desmond Williams ran the ball 24 times to accumulate 113 yards in the victory. Reid Evans posted four receptions for the receiving corps totaling 36 yards. Defensively, Jake Sweedyk made a team-high nine stops for ODU.

THE COACHES Mose Rison is in his third season as head coach at NCCU with an overall record of 12-17. Rison was announced as the school’s 19th head football coach on Feb. 6, 2007, assuming the role of head coach for the fi rst time in his 25-year coaching career. Rison served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the Eagles historic 11-1 campaign in 2006. With Rison directing NCCU’s offense, the 2006 Eagles scored 371 points (30.9 per game), the most in school history. Under Rison’s tutelage, freshman quarterback Stadford Brown was named as the “SBN Sports Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year,” the 2006 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year and CIAA Rookie of the Year. A 1978 graduate of Central Michigan University, Rison spent the 2005 season as the Quarterbacks Coach/Passing Coordinator at Davidson College, where the Wildcats averaged more than 200 yards passing per game running a West Coast offensive system. He has also held positions at Livingstone College (Offensive Coordinator, 2004), the University of Arizona (Wide Receivers/Passing Coordinator, 2003), Stanford University (Wide Receivers, 1995-2000), Rutgers University (Wide Receivers/Tight Ends, 1991-94), the U.S. Naval Academy (Wide Receivers, 1988-90), and Central Michigan University (Wide Receivers, 1981-87). During his tenure at Stanford, Rison coached in three bowl games, including the 2000 Rose Bowl. Rison, the cousin of fi ve-time NFL All-Pro receiver Andre Rison, spent two seasons (2001-02) in the National Football League coaching ranks as the wide receivers coach with the New York Jets, helping to develop Laveranues Coles and Santana Moss. He has also held NFL summer internships with the Baltimore Ravens (2000), Chicago Bears (1999), New York Jets (1993) and Detroit Lions (1988). A standout running back for Central Michigan from 1974-77, Rison helped the Chippewas to a 13-1 record and a Division II national title as a freshman. He rushed for 1,283 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a senior to earn all-conference and team MVP honors. Rison and his wife, Marilynn, have two children, Dominique (23) and Tara (20).

On June 21, 2005, the Old Dominion Board of Visitors voted to bring football back to the campus of Old Dominion. The man in charge of making a dream become reality is Bobby Wilder. Prior to his arrival at ODU, Wilder served on the Maine staff for the past 17 years and was promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2000 before moving to associate head coach in 2001. As coordinator, Wilder has orchestrated a balanced attack. The Black Bears averaged 29.1 points per game in 2004. Wilder was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in 2004, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in New England. A 1987 graduate of Maine with a degree in physical education, Wilder captained the Black Bears to the Yankee Conference Championship his senior year. An All-New England quarterback in 1985, he left Maine as the school’s all-time leading passer with 4,493 yards.

NCCU OFFENSE LEAVES OPPOSITION WITH 50/50 VISION NCCU scored at least 50 points in back-to-back games for the fi rst time in 41 years. The Eagles cruised past Central Methodist 52-7 on Oct. 17, then defeated Central State 53-22 on Oct. 31 after a bye week. An NCCU squad had not accomplished that

A RARE FLOCK OF EAGLESEagles are known to soar alone, but a rare fl ock of Eagles have gathered at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium this season. NCCU’s fi rst home game featured the host Eagles versus the Eagles of Morehead State University. On Oct. 17, the NCCU Eagles once again welcomed the Eagles, this time from Central Methodist University.

NCCU EAGLES AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS Since beginning play as an NCAA Division I-FCS competition 2007, NCCU has squared off against four nationally-ranked opponents, all resulting in losses. The Eagles suffered a 56-7 defeat at No. 8 James Madison on Sept. 6, 2008, and then fell at No. 3 Cal Poly by a score of 49-3 on Nov. 8, 2008. Earlier this season, NCCU held a 10-7 halftime lead at No. 24 Liberty, before the Eagles eventually succumbed to the Flames, 35-10, on Sept. 12. On Oct. 10, NCCU led No. 9/10 Appalachian State at the end of the fi rst quarter by a score of 14-7, before the Mountaineers rallied for a 55-21 victory.

SCOTT’S 179 RECEIVING YARDS AT A&T RANKS 11TH IN NCCU HISTORY NCCU senior receiver Will Scott amassed 179 receiving yards and a touchdown on fi ve catches at North Carolina A&T on Oct. 3 to equal the 11th-ranked performance in school history. On Nov. 9, 1985, Robert Clark recorded 179 receiving yards on 12 catches versus Johnson C. Smith.

GO LONG ... 73-YARD PLAY AGAINST A&T LONGEST IN DIVISION I ERA When sophomore quarterback Michael Johnson hit senior receiver Will Scott on a short slant early in the fourth quarter against rival North Carolina A&T on Oct. 3, the speedy Scott turned it into a 73-yard touchdown and the longest offensive play for NCCU during its three-year Division I-FCS era.

HENDERSON’S INTERCEPTION RETURN RANKS NINTH IN NCCU HISTORY At the 13:33 mark of the second quarter against Duke University on Sept. 26, NCCU junior safety Jeffery Henderson returned an interception 83 yards for a touchdown, equaling the ninth-longest interception return in NCCU history. Henderson has a knack for big returns. His other career interception came in his fi rst season as an Eagle against North Carolina A&T (Sept. 22, 2007), when he raced 72 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

MULTIPLE OVERTIME GAMES NOT IN FAVOR OF NCCU EAGLESTwo of NCCU’s three all-time multiple overtime games were contested during the 2009 season. The Eagles have played double overtime games versus Morehead State and at North Carolina A&T. The other double overtime game was on Oct. 18, 1997 at Bowie State. NCCU lost all three of those contests. The Eagles have never gone to a third overtime.

EAGLES PLAY FIRST OVERTIME GAME AT O’KELLY-RIDDICK STADUIM Prior to Saturday’s 13-10 double overtime setback against Morehead State University, the NCCU Eagles had never played an overtime game inside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. Since the NCAA initiated the overtime rule in 1996, the Eagles have played in six overtime games with a record of 2-4. Saturday was NCCU’s fi rst extra session contest since Sept. 10, 2005, when the visiting Eagles defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 28-21.

EAGLES SUFFER TWO SEASON-ENDING INJURIES IN PRESEASON CAMP The NCCU football program was hit with two signifi cant season-ending injuries during preseason camp. Junior wide receiver Corey Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) dislocated his left clavicle (collarbone), while senior offensive lineman Eric Stanley (Sterling, Va.) suffered a torn meniscus (cartilage) in his right knee, according to NCCU head

DID YOU KNOW?As part of North Carolina Central University’s Centennial celebration, the NCCU Department of Athletics will post sports history facts from the institution’s fi rst 100 years to its offi cial web site, www.NCCUEaglePride.com, every week during the year-long observance.

DID YOU KNOW? Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree became the fi rst head coach in North Carolina Central University history to win conference championships in multiple sports when she led both the softball and volleyball teams to CIAA titles in the late 1990s.

Wicker-McCree, currently the Director of Athletics at NCCU, got her start at the university as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball in the fall of 1994.

In the spring of 1998, Wicker-McCree earned her fi rst conference crown by leading the Lady Eagles to the CIAA softball championship, the fi rst in the program’s history.

In the fall of 1999, Wicker-McCree made NCCU coaching history when the Lady Eagles volleyball program captured its fi rst conference title.

Wicker-McCree went on to capture two more volleyball championships (2004 and 2005) before retiring from coaching after the 2005 campaign with 239 volleyball match victories to her credit.

athletic trainer Sean Thomas. Harris has already had surgery, while Stanley’s injury also requires surgery. In regards to the season-ending injury to Harris, Rison said, “We are going to have to count on some freshmen to play for us. Someone else is going to have to step up to fi ll that void at the receiver position.” Rison added about Stanley’s injury, “Eric has worked extremely hard in his preparations for this season and had a great fall camp. He will have a chance to come back next season, but this is a signifi cant loss for our offensive line.”

RISON ANNOUNCES TEAM CAPTAINS, STARTING QUARTERBACK RISON ANNOUNCES TEAM CAPTAINS, STARTING QUARTERBACK The on-fi eld leadership for the 2009 NCCU football program was revealed on Aug. 26, as head coach Mose Rison announced three team captains and the opening day starting quarterback for the Eagles. In a vote by the members of the NCCU football team, senior fullback Saeed Abdul-Azeez (Durham, N.C.) was selected as the offensive captain, junior linebacker Donald Laster (Shaker Heights, Ohio) as the Donald Laster (Shaker Heights, Ohio) as the Donald Lasterdefensive captain, and junior linebacker Anthony Sharp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) as the special teams captain. “Anytime you have an opportunity to be named as captain by your peers, really tells you something about the impression you have made on your football team,” Rison said. “It says a lot about all three of them. I am looking forward to them leading our football team.” Sophomore Michael Johnson (Durham, N.C.) has received the nod as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. As a red-shirt freshman in 2008, Johnson appeared in four games for NCCU, including three as the starter under center. He completed 32-of-62 passes for 517 yards (129.2 passing yards per game) and a team-best six touchdowns. Johnson was selected as the starter over sophomore Keon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.), who appeared in seven games a year ago, including three as the starting quarterback. Williams fi nished with 462 yards on 38-of-66 passing. “It was a tough decision, because both young men are very capable of leading this football program,” Rison said. “Based on their play and what we are trying to do, Michael Johnson will be our starting quarterback.” To view the complete interview with Rison making the announcements, visit www.YouTube.com/NCCUEagles.

NCCU DUO EARNS PRESEASON HONORS FROM LINDY’S MAGAZINE Lindy’s 2009 College Football Preview magazine named NCCU senior wide receiver Lindy’s 2009 College Football Preview magazine named NCCU senior wide receiver Lindy’s 2009 College Football PreviewWill Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior defensive lineman Teryl White (Winston-Salem, N.C.) as the tops on their side of the pigskin among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Independents. Lindy’s annual publication tagged Scott as the FCS Independent Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while White was chosen as the FCS Independent Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Scott, a 6-3, 182-pound receiver out of Charlotte, N.C., topped NCCU last season with 45 receptions for 787 yards and fi ve touchdowns. The rising senior averaged 17.5 yards per catch and 71.5 yards per contest a year ago. “Will Scott could be one of the most explosive receivers in the country,” said NCCU football head coach Mose Rison. “He has great speed and can run past people. I look for him to have an outstanding senior year.” White, a 6-5, 278-pound junior from Winston-Salem, N.C., led the Eagles with 11.0 tackles for a loss, including 3.0 sacks, and topped all linemen with 55 total takedowns. “A lot of school’s missed out of Teryl White,” Rison said. “He is athletic and can run. Teryl had an outstanding spring practice season and I think he is going to have a great year.”an outstanding spring practice season and I think he is going to have a great year.”
