Letter from the President Our Parents and our Programs Are Out of this World! In the first months of school, we were just beginning to take off. With most of our fundraising behind us, we have officially blasted off. Our Un-Fundraiser, Box Tops, Charleston Wrap, Original Works, and Scholastic Book Fair fundraisers helped us earn over $10,000 for our school! Though a tiresome task, Maureen Connors, Abbie Williams, Jennifer Jones, Jennifer Jackson, Amy Munson, and Missy Peoples made our fundraisers fun and educational too! Give these wonderful ladies a big ―Thank You‖ for making it all possible! Our ―Out of this World‖ Scholastic Book Fair was a tremendous success, raising almost $3,000 for our school and helping bring lots of new books and excitement about reading to our campus. Special thanks goes out to our fall book fair chair, Amy Munson, who did an extra-ordinarily wonderful job, as well as to our VP of Fundraising, Maureen Connors, our tireless treasurer, Virginia Deeny, and to our fantastic librarian, Dee Porter, who was so accommodating during all the excitement. Thanks also goes to all of the volunteers and junior crew who started early, worked late, and made the book fair so much fun for our kids and their families. The best part of fundraising, of course, is that it allows us to bring really special programs to our school. We began this year with some new ideas and concepts, including our new Parent Seminar. Our first program, ―Bullying 101‖ on October 26, explored ways to prevent bullying on our campus and provided tools to keep our own kids from bullying or being bullied. Our next seminar, ―The STAAR Test: What do Expect‖ takes place on January 29, 2012 from 8-9 a.m. We hope you‘ll mark your calendar and plan to join us for this upcoming session, as well as another seminar focused on parenting, called ―Love and Logic‖ in the spring. Our Science Night blasted us off into new heights. Who would have thought that we would have the Austin Mobile Planetarium, the UT physics Circus, Mad SCIENCE and real, authentic NASA exhibits in one night? But we did and the overwhelming success of the event is thanks to Suzanne Verde, who coordinated the night, Erin Kolecki, our VP of IB Events, and Susan Rebtoy, who worked so hard to make the NASA experience possible for our families. Our amazing principal, Brenda Cruz, allowed us to make the night so special and donned the Apollo space suit all night for the kids. This first-time event was such a sensation that we will plan for a bigger crowd next year! We also adopted a new tradition this fall with the ―Ribbon of Thanks‖ project, modeled after Tanabata, the Japanese custom of adorning bamboo trees with message filled ribbons. Demonstrating their ―IB‖ attitudes, our students reflected on their own lives and talked about what they are thankful for as we enter the holiday season. Each student wrote ‗notes of thanks‘ on colorful ribbons that are being shared with our community on display along the fence our campus entrance. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Stacia Kveton for sharing this idea and bringing it to fruition at our campus. Join us on December 8 at our Annual Holidays Around the World event this year as we celebrate the rich cultures and traditions of our GVHE families and enjoy the talents of our talented GVHE choir. With all of that, I wish you the very happiest of holiday seasons! WILD about Our GVHE Volunteers!

Thanksgiving may be over, but the GVHE PTA wants you to know what we are most thankful for—ALL of our volunteers!

Charleston Wrap raised more than $4,000 for our school (the students sold over $12,000 in merchanidise)! Jennifer Jones, Maureen Connors and Virginia Deeny, along with the help of several other volunteers, were instrumental in pulling this fundraiser off.

Amy Munson and Missy Peoples put on an OUT OF THIS WORLD book fair with the help of so many wonderful parents and grandparents including, Ruthie Black, Gretchen Langston, Maureen Connors, Abbie Williams, Genevieve Lawrence, Bettye Kochendorfer, Devanshi Patel, Kim Brown, Heather Reeves, Amy Benefiel, Rebecca Huang, Rebecca McMahon, Tanja Saiidi, Tanya Warpula, Jo Ann Taunton, Cherilyn Gurrola, Dee Dee Nutt, Mary Beth Becker, Keri LeBlanc, Julie Beach, Stephanie Haug, Amanda Lim, Veronica Harper, Jamyee Pleasant, and Lisa Dow.

The Original Works fundraiser was successful and special thanks goes to Jennifer Jackson, who headed up this fundraiser, and our art teacher, Ms. Henderson, for helping us inspire art and raise funds for our school

Science Night was a huge success! Thanks to Suzanne Verde and her team (Andrea Wardrop, Stacy Harrington, Jamyee Pleasant, Betty Korchendorfer, Gary Phillips, Chuck Zon, Genevieve Lawrence, and Dee Dee and Jason Nutt) for planning and executing a fun-filled and educational night for all of the GVHE families!

The Thanksgiving lunch was a bountiful and fun event. The entire cafeteria staff would like to join us in thanking all of the volunteers who helped to serve lunch and to clean up after the hundreds of people who came through

the cafeteria. Thanks to Erica Freer, Chuck Zon, Amy Benefiel, Tanya Warpula, Cherilyn Gurrola, Veronica Harper, Jo Ann Taunton, Kerri McHugh, Erin Kolecki, Susan Rebtoy, Stephanie Haug and Genevieve Lawrence!I‘d like to give a special thanks to Suzanne Marshall for her creativity, thoughtfulness and organization of the annual Staff Appreciation Harvest Luncheon. Also, thanks to all of you who provided the food for our incredible staff!

Hill Country Education FoundationThe Hill Country Education Foundation is raising funds for programs and teachers at our area schools— Vandegrift High School and all elementary and middle schools that feed into it.

Stephanie Haug is the foundation‘s GVHE campus representative and is very excited to be part of this "academic booster club." HCEF has already made a number of accomplishments in their short history. They‘ve raised $32,000 at their first Gala fundraiser in May 2011; distributed nearly $10,000 to

area robotics clubs; pledged $50,000 for the next five years to LISD for Naviance Succeed (a college readiness software); and will soon allocate $25,000 to our schools and community through their Impact Grant program.

Please join Stephanie in becoming a member of HCEF today. If we can get just 10% of our families to join, we could raise $70,000 in membership alone! Just imagine what the Foundation can do to help our students with that kind of money!

If you have any questions, don‘t hesitate to contact Stephanie.

In her own words:

―I truly believe in the mission of this organization. In my first meeting, I learned that they want to help make VHS a top 100 high school in the nation. We can do this!‖

Creating a Culture of

Kindness at GVHE

On October 26, more than 40 parents attended ―Bullying 101,‖ during which Mary Ann Kluga, Leander ISD‘s drug and alcohol prevention coordinator, helped parents recognize the signs and symptoms of bullying. As a result of the great feedback we received from the program, we will be implementing a ―Culture of Kindness‖ Team at Grandview Hills and would love your help in coordinating the effort.

Thanks to all of the parents who participated and brought breakfast treats.

Here is Ms. Kluga's list of ways that we, as parents, can support a Culture of Kindness:

Teach the difference between tattling and telling.

Teach kindness and caring. Make kindness and caring parts of your everyday vocabulary.

Invite kids to make choices.

Promote random acts of kindness.

Teach empathy and compassion.

Be kind.

Be consistent with rules and consequences.

Talk about values/ethical principles.

Use teachable moments – relate everything to kindness and caring.

Role model positive, respectful, and caring behavior. Watch own reactions and words.

Promote diversity.

Make sure we (adults) are warm, caring and having a positive influence with the children. Give compliments. Be grateful!

If you (or your 4th or 5th grade student) are interested in being part of the Culture of Kindness Team, please contact PTA President Karin Samman at [email protected]
