PRESIDENT’S REPORT

At the time of writing the 1st Grade has won both Premierships on offer, the 50 over One Day Cup and

the T20 Cup. The two day Premiership will be fought on next weekend and West Torrens is again a

participant. By the time this Eagle Eye is printed we will know the result. To date participating in all

three Grand Finals has been achieved only three times, Northern Districts (2009-10) and Tea Tree Gully

(2013-14 and 2015-16) but no Club has ever won all three. In addition the Men’s 4th Grade have secured

a Home Grand Final at Henley Oval.

Both Women’s teams did a tremendous job to make the semi-finals despite the youth and inexperience

of each team. The Under 13 Reds also were Premiers in the Western Suburbs Junior C.A.

The success of the Club both on and off the field has been due to superior coaching, volunteer effort

and above all culture. We have built a culture around family which in turn has developed the Club as

one big family. The youngest lad in the U.11s and the youngest girls in the ‘2s’ are equally important to

West Torrens as Lauren Ebsary and Trent Kelly. Some people are more talented than others but nobody

is more important than another.

Similarly off the field the Bar-B-Q cooks, the scorers, the ground preparers, the umpires at the U13s are

peers with the people designated to hold official positions. I wish to thank everyone who has supported

the Club in any way and thus contributed to our success this season. Without you we would not have

won our battle to remain as an independent entity.

The Club had an amazing night at the Bradman-Rolton Presentations with Daniel Drew taking out the

coveted Bradman Medal plus many other decorated recipients (see separate article). West Torrens had

its greatest representation ever with a 37 strong contingent supporting their favourite sons and

daughters.

Lauren Ebsary reached another milestone when she scored 102 (82b.) against Kensington. This took her

to 11 centuries for West Torrens overtaking Ben Higgins and Andy Smith on 10. Only Ron Hamence,

Alan Shepherd and Paul Nobes are ahead of ‘Beeper’ each with 12 ‘tons’ to their names.

Much has been said about the fight to stand alone and independent by ourselves and Port Adelaide.

However it should be noted that West Torrens and Port Adelaide met in the semi-finals of both the

West End 1st Grade competition and the One Day (50 over) Cup. Further West Torrens and Port Adelaide

are the ONLY two Clubs to have teams in the Finals of BOTH Women’s Grades.


After long building delays we have now moved into the rebuilt Clubrooms after having to endure Gulag

conditions for 19 weeks of the season. The Club is massively grateful to Latisha, Wimp and Hutto and

other helpers for the work in keeping people ‘victualled’ out of the West End caravan. A very big thanks

also to West End for supplying the caravan and Tony Jones who secured it.

The new Curator’s shed and storage facility has begun and should be complete in a week or two giving

Trent, Micko and Spencer a new luxury plus added storage space for the Club memorabilia.

I can’t name everyone of the 75 plus people who are the volunteers and backbone of the Club but I

would like to mention a couple. The Joseph family has the patriarch Lawrence as the U.16 Whites

Manager and all four of the siblings are players. Three are captains – Jess (Women’s 1st Grade) Darren

(Men’s 4th Grade) and Daniel (Under 16 Whites) while Josh also plays in the U16 Whites. Poor Mum

Maria stays home on Saturday afternoons preparing Afternoon Tea for three matches. An unsung hero

is Tim Allen. For every Eagle Eye and the Annual Report he formats the copy and then prints 150 copies

at his expense. Thanks so much.

STOP PRESS The 1st Grade had a resounding win over Kensington at Woodville Oval to clinch the

1st Grade Premiership by 158 runs. Keeper batsman Leigh ‘Lethal’ Drennan won the David Hookes medal

as the outstanding player of the match and was ably supported by Trent Kelly 4/45. West Torrens

became the only Club in history to win the Triple Crown of T20, One Day Cup (50 overs) and the West

End 1st Grade Premiership. Over 200 Eagles supporters watched each day and vocally supported the

lads. This was a win for everyone at the Club from the Bar-B-Q cooks to the Afternoon Tea servers to

the junior umpires to the Junior Academy coaches.

1st Grade Report

In the Grand Final at Woodville Oval the team had compiled 8/325 at stumps on the first day and added

a further 8 runs on Sunday morning. The strong Kensington batting line-up was not able to withstand

the four pronged pace attack supplemented by two capable spinners and eventually succumbed for

176. Leigh Drennan added the David Hookes Medal to his wide collection.

4th Grade Report

After a gut wrenching 9 successive victories to reach the Grand Final the young lads fell at the final

obstacle and conceded to Tea Tree Gully. Our boys overcome by G/F nerves could only muster 63. They


tried desperately to rectify the situation but were unable to make serious inroads to the TTG batting

line up. Well tried and great experience for 2017-18.

STAN the STATISTICIAN

Brooke Harris became the youngest female player to score a century in 1st Grade (19y. 183d.) when she

hit an unbeaten 100 v. Southern Districts at Henley High School in February. Brooke is also the youngest

West Torrens player (male or female) to make a century in senior Grades when she scored 137 (26 x 4s)

v. Port Adelaide in Women’s B Grade in February 2012 aged 14y. 169 d. Tait Mackrill was only 14y.

187d. when she scored 109 n.o. v. Kensington in Women’s B Grade in March 2014.

Brooke and Women’s 1st Grade captain Jess Joseph became the first West Torrens females to play in

the senior Men’s Grades when they played in the winning (1st innings) 3rd Grade side against Tea Tree

Gully at Henley High School in February. Jess took 1/9 from her 4 overs and Brooke gave up only 3 runs

from her solitary over. Jess was selected in the ‘3s’ again the following week in another winning side.

Caitlin Edmunds has been a regular in the Under 16 Whites while also playing Women’s 1st Grade.

A new Women’s 1st Grade 4th wicket partnership of 90 (unfinished) was established by Brooke Harris

100 n.o. and Ellie Falconer 33 n.o. v. Southern Districts at Henley High School in February. The previous

best was 88 by Lauren Ebsary (126) and Lucy Williams (17) v. Southern Districts at Gleneagles Reserve

in December 2013.

Former West Torrens and current Queensland opening bowler and Test player Peter George took his

200th First class wicket (in his 62nd match) when he trapped Tasmanian opener Jake Hancock l.b.w. at

Bellerive Oval in March. Another loss for the Eagles and South Australia but a big plus for Queensland.

Kadina recruit Ben Davies took 5/23 and 5/10 against Northern Districts in the Under 16 Reds in

February. This is the first time a West Torrens U.16 has performed the feat since Mark Voyzey’s 4/18

and 6/23 v. Tea Tree Gully at Banksia Pk. H.S.in January 1999. Other U.16s to perform the feat are

4/21 and 6/27 David Niemann v. East Torrens at Kings Reserve West January 1987

7/23 and 3/35 Peter Screnci v. East Torrens at Windsor Gardens H.S. March 1996


In the same match in which Ben starred, wicket keeper Luke James (from Paskeville) caught 3 and

stumped 2 to equal the record for most dismissals in an innings for an Under 16. He equalled Jacob

Burridge’s 1c. 4st. v. Port Adelaide at Fulham Gdns P.S. in December 2009. Both Luke and Jacob took a

catch in the second innings to have the most victims in a match.

Wallaroo recruit and opening batsman Dylan Branson scored 58 n.o. (in a total of 126) v. Northern

Districts at Lockleys North P.S. in Round 10 to become the first West Torrens Junior to carry his bat

through a completed innings. Harry Russell batted through the innings quota of 40 overs in a Ray Sutton

Shield match v. Southern Districts at Henley High School in November 2012 scoring 35 n.o. out of 3/131

(c.c.).

Christmas Cricket. Test match cricket has been played twice on Christmas Day, both times at Adelaide

Oval. The first was against the West Indies in 1951 (Day 3) and the other against India in 1967 (Day 2).

Sheffield Shield matches were played at Adelaide Oval on Christmas Day every year v. Queensland

(except if Christmas fell on a Sunday) from 1926-27 to 1969-70.

Current Eagle Callum Ferguson moved into seventh place in the all-time list of top First class run getters

for South Australia after he posted 90 in the second innings against Tasmania. ‘Ferg’ has scored 6543

runs @ 39.17. Currently those ahead of him are Darren Lehmann 11,622 (@ 56.97) Greg Blewett 9682

(@ 46.10) David Hookes 9364 (@ 47.77) Les Favell (8269 @ 38.28) Ian Chappell (7665 ( @ 53.22) Neil

Dansie 6692 (@ 35.22).

to 11 centuries (including one double century) for West Torrens overtaking Ben Higgins and Andy Smith

on 10. Only Ron Hamence, Alan Shepherd and Paul Nobes are ahead of ‘Beeper’ each with 12 ‘tons’ to

their names. Three of Lauren’s centuries have been in T20 contests. It should be noted that the Women

play all 50 over or T20 matches so she needs to score at a rapid rate to reach 100 as she doesn’t open

the batting.

Logan Pastyn and Carl Mickan joined Doug Riggs as the only players in the Club’s 160 year history to

play in Premierships in 1st,2nd and 3rd Grades (A, B and C Grades). Doug Riggs kept wicket

in four consecutive Grand Finals for West Torrens in three different grades - 1954-55 A grade (won),

1955-56 C grade (won), 1956-57 B grade (lost) and 1957-58 (won). Logan began his Premiership

collection in 2002-03 (B Grade) followed by 2007-08 (C Grade) 2012-13 (B Grade – captain) and 2016-

17 (1stGrade). Micko’s run was 2006-07 (C Grade) 2007-08 (B Grade) and 2016-17 (1st Grade).

MEN’S 1ST GRADE

The ‘Firsts’ concluded a great minor round with a comfortable win against Southern Districts at Bice

Oval in a One Day scrap. Guided by vice-captain Leigh Drennan with an unbeaten 110 West Torrens

scored 8/243 from the allocated quota. Southern showed plenty of fight but Logan Pastyn’s 4/40 saw

the Stingrays 31 runs short with 9/212 at the end of their quota.

Having won the right to host the semi-final against our ‘partner in adversary’ the Eagles went into the

game slight favourites and after dismissing the Magpies for 173 retained the favouritism. Daniel Drew

was the chief wicket taker with 3/15. However after a good start we almost threw the match away

requiring a tense rearguard fight from Trent Kelly and Spencer Johnson. The old stager and the colt put

on 66 for the eighth wicket to help the Eagles scramble over the line.

Following a One Day Cup and a T20 Premiership we are now in the fight to be the first Club to take the

triple crown.

Rocka

WOMEN’S 1ST GRADE

With the T20 competition over for another season, our focus turned back again to the One Day

competition, with a chance of finals still an option if we finished the season strongly. Round 7 against

Kensington was by far our best Performance of the season. Batting first, our opening partnership of


Ange Treloar and Tait Mackrill took on Kensington’s bowling attack from ball one, which set the run rate

and intent to score for the rest of the innings. Coming in at number 4 Lauren Ebsary made her return to

club cricket seamless after a season with the Perth “Scorchers” with a thrilling 107 of 82 balls helping

us to our season’s highest innings total of 264. Some economical bowling and crucial fielding saw us

bowl out top of the table leaders for 112.

Round 8, was another great win for the girls with momentum again coming from Ange Treloar at the

top of the order. Quick fire 30’s from Lauren Ebsary and Ellie Falconer helped the total along but it was

Brooke Harris who anchored the innings scoring her maiden 100 on the last ball of the innings giving us

a defendable 238. Eager to see the boys with their T20 flag down the road, the bowlers took no time

ending the game bowling the visitors for 73 in the 25th over with Laura Nijalke claiming the last 4 wickets

for an easy 7 runs.

With a loss in round 9 against Sturt we sat in 4th position with the last minor round against 5th position

Northern Districts, a loss would see our season ended but a win or draw meant semi finals. Fortunately

the weather played in our favour and a washout meant we finished 4th and would take on Kensington

in the semi finals. The girl’s efforts after in the new year have been commendable, having only lost the

two games post- Christmas allowing us to make it to the semi finals of the One day competition.

Congratulations to Ange Treloar who at the end of the minor round is the leading run scorer for the One

Day competition, with Brooke Harris, Lauren Ebsary and Ellie Falconer rounding out the top 7.

The Eaglettes took on the strong Kensington combination in the semi-final at Park 25 #1. The girls went

down fighting after a top order collapse (4/40) with 17 y.o. Ellie Falconer (from Clare) contributing a

fighting 54 before being run out. She was ably assisted by veterans former Test player Caroline Ward

(22) and Annette Johnson (25) who is unable to train and plays just a limited number of games due to

work commitments. The very young attack tried hard with the ball (Ellie 2/36 and Brooke Harris 2/32)

but the more experienced Kensington side reached the total with 5 wickets in hand.

MEN’S 2ND GRADE

The final few rounds were very disappointing for the Second Grade. Sitting 3rd with 3 rounds to play, we

expected to play finals but continual batting collapses and failure to convert starts saw us lose 2 key


matches in a row to see us unable to qualify heading into the final round. It is frustrating for the team,

as we feel we have wasted a season in which for the majority of time we played very good cricket. It is

a bitter pill to swallow but I am confident that the young playing group will learn from this experience

and come back hungrier next season.

Despite the negative overall tone of our results, there have been a number of notable individual

performances. Matt Ferraro earned promotion back into the side after consistent outstanding

performances in the third grade, and immediately reminded everyone of his class with 7 wickets in the

final two matches of the season. The loss of opening bowlers Zac Bess and Bailey Hann was critical to

our overall failure to qualify for the finals, However the form of Matt and Lucas Gammon replacing

them, was a bright note to the end of the season. With the bat too Lucas shone, as he and number 11

Sean O’Dwyer held on for 10 overs against Northern Districts to ensure a draw and at that stage keep

our season alive.

Thanks for assistance must go to Greg Stanford, our Manager, who has put a mountain of work in every

Saturday to ensure we can focus on playing. He is the definition of a club man and his efforts are truly

appreciated. Similarly thanks go to our scorer Brian LeCornu, whose continued support is cherished,

and Hags and Brenton, who have done a tremendous job with the whole playing group.

WOMEN’S 2ND GRADE

Results for Rounds 5 to 11 of the 40 over matches: two wins, one loss, a bye and three matches

abandoned due to weather. Very frustrating for the girls.

The team finished 4th in the 40 over competition, with 5 wins & 2 losses, and played it’s semi-final

against top team Northern Districts on Mar 19th. On a hot day out at Salisbury Oval our young team

played well but the strong Northern team won out on the day.

The team is mostly aged 11 to 14 and has done very well this season, with the assistance of a few senior

players along the way. Well done to Teagan Fry and Jess Cufone who took on the captaincy when the

seniors weren’t available. This great bunch of girls has improved a lot during the season and we look

forward to seeing them all next season.

MEN’S 3RD GRADE

The Third Grade side had a fairly good ending to the 2016/17 season in our final four matches. A

frustrating draw against Northern Districts, a first innings loss to Glenelg, a first innings win and outright

loss to Tea Tree Gully, and one-day win against Southern District completed our season. Although we

finished the regular season in 9th position and clearly out of the finals race, there were a lot of positives

to take out of these games and the whole season in general. Throughout the season, there were

occasions where the side could’ve easily given up a first innings and outright result, but to the boys’

credit we didn’t let that happen and fought every game out to the end. This is something I am, and the

rest of boys, should be really proud off.

Our final two games against Tea Tree Gully and Southern District were our best wins of the year. Tea

Tree Gully required a first innings and outright result to keep them in the hunt for finals, which we were

able to wreck thanks to some outstanding efforts from our senior guys in Nidal Sultan and Jarrad Hoskin,

as well as an awesome contribution from Under 16 Leyhton Hann in just his second senior game for the

club. This game saw Brooke Harris, Jessica Joseph and Under 16 Cameron Gammon make their third

grade debuts for the club, as well as a return to cricket for Andrew ‘Springy’ Boeyen.

The Southern District game saw us beat them with a side averaging around the 16 years of age mark.

Cameron Gammon played his second senior game for the club while juniors Joshua Joseph, Ryan

Nikoleaff, Ben Hoy, and Joshi Akshat made their senior debuts for the club, and Sarvesh Hinganikar

played his first game also. I would like to thank all the above persons for helping the third grade side

out in the last few games to get a side on the park, and I hope they enjoyed the experience they had.

All in all, it was an awesome experience to captain this side this year and I thank Mark Harrity, Brenton

Woolford and the rest of the club for allowing to me do so. I would like to take this opportunity to say

thanks to Harry Clark-Burnham and Ash Clark. Having these boys at the club was awesome, both are

top lads and I hope to see them back in West Torrens apparel in the near future. To the senior guys who

helped me out with the captaincy thank you also, I couldn’t have done it without your assistance. Finally,

thank you to Chris Miles, Rob Carrington, Amy Agnew, Peter Hutton and Matt Gammon for all scoring

MEN’S 4TH GRADE

Round 10 saw us venture out to the Paddocks to play Northern Districts in a two-dayer. Bowling first

we skittled them for 76, all the bowlers chipping in with wickets. BG and Dory claiming three catches

each. We got first innings points on day one thanks to a brilliant 102 n.o. from Clay Muirhead who was

well supported by BG for 49. Once again a team effort from our bowlers saw us bowl out Northerns for

57, our first outright for the year!


Against Glenelg all 5 bowlers picked up two each, rolling Glenelg for 63. Once again Muirs (72) and BG

(55) led the way with the bat to see us reach 5/172 dec. We tried to get an outright but to no avail. Jack

Dugan rolling the arm over for a economical spell of 0/1 of 2.

We have a habit of having close low scoring games with Tea Tree Gully and this year was no different.

After Brad Cocks ripped through their batters to claim 4 wickets, we required 93 to win. At 5/60 odd

overnight, things were looking in the balance. Alex Hutton dragged the boys over the line for a win with

a gritty 54 n.o. off 172 balls, His first half century for WTDCC.

In the last game of the round we played Southern Districts. Ben Fulton claimed 4/12 and Jordy Capel 2

for in his return. We made the 69 runs required in 20 overs to see us lock in a semi final against Uni.

After a slow start to the season, the boys won 8 in a row leading in to finals. Each player has chipped in

throughout the season which shows what an even side we have. In the semi-final against University BG

steadied the batting with 86 and was ably assisted by Jack Dugan with 42 to guide the total to 235. Brad

Cocks and Jordy Capel each claimed 4 scalps to bundle the Blacks out for 124 and secure a home Grand

Final.

Hopefully we still have another win in us!

UNDER 16 RED

Round 9 - 2 day game v Woodville at St Clair on the ugliest pitch seen this year. Woodville won the toss

and batted. A good bowling and fielding effort saw 8 wickets from catches and 1 r.o. - Woodville 9/172

at stumps. We had hopes of chasing the runs but had couple of our top order batsmen unwell and with

intermittent rain we only managed a disappointing 112. C. Groves 4/21, R.Nikoleaff 2/25

Round 10 - 2 day game at Gleneagles v Northern Districts. Northerns batted first and posted 10/71 then

we had to bat for 35 overs on first day. We passed the score with a 72 run first wicket partnership

between Ben Cheeseman and Coby Grindlay, which gave us thoughts of outright win. We batted on into

second day and declared 5/183. Giving 43 overs for an outright which seemed always on the cards

throughout the innings but ND hung on to be 8/125 at stumps.

Round 11 – 2 day game at Westminster v Adelaide. This game saw a lot of regular players not available

due to college and a couple playing seniors, giving an opportunity for some younger players. D. Branford

made 23 and N. Maguire made 26. Both U14 players playing up. J Akshat made 50 including a huge 6.

Bowling saw the U14 lads again enjoy the challenge of playing up with J Zunic opening bowling 2/29. M

Parsons 2/28. Unfortunately Adelaide won posting 5/172 off 44 overs.

The 16 Reds finished 9th but could have been a lot higher with bit more luck (and a few more runs). The

16 Reds were competitive in all but 2 games; In 3 of the games they were in a position to win outright

but couldn’t quite get the extra points. If a couple of close games went our way and our strongest team

was available every week, it would be a different story. Bring on 2017/18.

A great bunch of boys represented West Torrens in the 16 Reds comp. this year with a number moving

to seniors next season - West Torrens future is bright and in good hands.

Round 9: West Torrens def. Woodville @ Gleneagles Reserve

In a 2-day match, we lost the toss and were sent into bat on a usual Gleneagles green top. The day did

not start very brightly, with the top three falling cheaply for not many. The middle order look steady

with Sam Chambers, Fergus Gillespie and Imaad Abdul Shakur all getting starts to get us to a defendable

10/131. Woodville batted for 10 overs and were about 2/30 at stumps. The 2nd week, the bowlers

bowled extremely well to bowl out Woodville for 120. Best bowlers Seby Masih (4/13) and Josh Joseph

(3/32) Man of the match: Seby Masih

Round 10: West Torrens def. Northern Districts @ the Paddocks ND forfeited to us.

Round 11: West Torrens def by Adelaide @ Gleneagles Reserve

In the last round to secure a top four spot, the boys were ready for a challenge against fourth placed

Adelaide. WT won the toss and elected to bat on the usual green top of Gleneagles. Adelaide’s openers

started well with a solid partnership of 43, but soon came to end by some alert fielding by Fergus

Gillespie with a good runout. Adelaide’s number 3 batsman worked hard for a well-earned 60 while

wickets crumbled around him due to some good partnership bowling form Josh Joseph and fellow


spinner Cam Gaylard, the only double wicket takers finishing Adelaide off for 150 all out. WT batted on

the first day for 10 overs losing our opener and making WT 1/20 overnight. Antonio Cufone the night

watchman played a very conservative innings while wickets fell around him. One again Lewis Sharland

hit the ball hard making a quick 23 which once again gave us more hope. Unfortunately we fell 30 runs

short and missed a place in the finals. Man of the Match: Antonio Cufone.

UNDER 14 RED

Unfortunately after starting the year off so well with wins in the first 3 games, we finished sixth and an

earlier than expected finish to the season. Rounds 9-11 created mixed results with a win and two losses.

Round 9 against Woodville- we batted 1st and made 125 which was a very good score after being 6/31

but thanks to some solid rear guard action by Luke Terry 31 and Ned Maguire 21 whilst Max Parsons

helped runs accumulate at the other end whilst scoring 5 off 48. A great bowling and fielding effort was

required on the small oval to win the game and thanks to the early spell of Lachie Hodder Trenwith 4/17

off 15 overs we had them 7/30. Then Woodville fought back very strongly and needed 3 an over with 3

wickets in hand for the last 20 overs to win the game or the rain to arrive and save them. Thanks to the

spinners at the end when the ball was too wet for the quicks to hold, Marshall, Parsons and Agnew

bowled 19 tight overs between them for a total of 30 runs to help win the game in the last over. Very

exciting for players and parents.

Round 10 v Northern Districts required a win to make the finals. ND batted and were 0/70 half an hour

before tea then the spin of Siebum 5/41 and Marshall 2/16, saw them lose 5 quick wickets to be 5/88

at tea. ND tail then wagged and they made a total of 184 which was a very gettable score at LNPS. The

run chase started very well being 0/48 but a lack of commitment to the cause saw use lose 10/86 and

finish all out for 126 and no chance of making finals. Dylan Branford carried his bat all the way through

with a magnificent 58 of 133 balls and showed the other 10 batsmen what sort of determination is

required to succeed at this level with the bat, well done Dylan.

Round 11 saw 5 second year players move up to U16 reds to cover the shortages in U16 reds created

by the College Cricket system. Great opportunity for 5 players to be rewarded for solid performances

from U14 Whites and play the last game in 14 Reds. We played Adelaide who batted first and made 236

on the small Immanuel over. Two great bowling performances by Whites players who came up for their


first game, Chandan Saddi 3/35 and Tom Nattrass 3/48 bowled very well and all their overs were bowled

into the wind without complaint. Great effort boys! Score was more than it should have been with only

2 players making above 20 with one of them being dropped 3 times and the other given not out on 10

(went on to make 90) in a very obvious dismissal. Nevertheless the score was still gettable if two or

three players could make 50+. Four players got starts but didn’t go on with it, with Marshall 48 off 84

of with 3 sixes, Agnew 34 off 72, Hawke 23 off 44 and Terry 23 of 132. Unfortunately we went a little

slow early in the run chase and finished 60 runs short being all out for 179. Still a great effort with a

really young side and 5 new players against the team ranked 2nd on the ladder and who have only lost

2 games for the year. Good luck to the boys going up to U16s and the future looks bright for the U14s.

UNDER 14 WHITE

Unfortunately the u14 whites failed to make the finals this year, finishing the season in 9th place. It was

a very close ladder and we were in the hunt for the finals right up to penultimate game. After a

fine victory against finalist Woodville, where we restricted them to 96, wickets shared between 6

players and chasing them down with everyone chipping in.

We went into the last 2 rounds knowing 2 victories would see us make the finals. We came up against

Northern Districts who set us 153 for victory, great bowling from Chandon Saddi 4-25 in his second

game for the club. In reply we lost a couple of early wickets but a great partnership between Jack Hawke

(40) and Thomas Brown (25) left us in a great position needing 50 off 16 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

Unfortunately a late order collapse made us come up short. A great effort none the less, and showed

we are not really far away from being a good team.

The last game of the season was against Adelaide and with finals now being out of our reach gave us

the opportunity to give everyone a bat and a bowl. We set them 140, thanks mainly to Nick

Thornton(38), Jaxon Dell'oro (39 off 19b. with 2x6s and 6x4s) and Thomas Brown(21). Adelaide chased

it down thanks to a wonder innings from one of their players scoring 120 not out, next highest scorer

with 11. They went past us with 9 wickets down. Everyone got a bat and a bowl and it was an enjoyable

end to the season for most.


Special thanks to Robyn Dell'oro and Joanne Kozned for doing the majority of the scoring during the

season. Finally a special mention to Jaxon Dell'oro, leading fantastically both on and off the field, as a

captain and as a player. Thank you to all the other players who have played during the season, there

are too many to mention. We had a very young team and most weeks came up against bigger and older

players but they all more than held their own and should be very proud of the way that they have played

and conducted themselves during the season.

UNDER 13 RED

In a sweet 8 days for the club, the U13 Reds helped the First Grade fill the new trophy cabinet. But we

did well just to make the final.

Following a washout in the penultimate round, it came down to the last week of the season. Depending

on results, each of the top three sides could host the final, finish second, or miss out completely. Our

boys put in a great effort to not only win, but score a rare outright victory to guarantee a place in the

final. Nathan Marshall was the pick of the players with two wickets in both digs and two fast-paced not

out innings’, while Rhys Kozned was also a multiple wicket taker.

Fulham secured top spot, so for the final we headed to Collins Reserve with an unchanged side. Bowling

first, Harry Cook and Nick Boeyen put the pressure on immediately conceding just one run between

them in their opening spell. The openers survived, but soon fell as they looked to increase the run rate.

Having consolidated to 2/80, Sammy “The Match Turner” Sammy Turner literally changed the course of

the game. His stunning caught & bowled dismissal triggered a slide, and Fulham lost 8/42 to be all out

for 122 in the 38th over. Sammy finished with the outstanding figures of 3/6 off 6 overs, while Billy

Hawke also took 3 wickets and provided a run out assist.

With captain Charlie Edmunds unwell, Jack Hawke was joined at the top of the order by brother Billy

and they had 40 runs on the board when both retired. Ryan Paul and Luca Paolo saw off a challenging

few overs before stumps were pulled on day one with the boys 0/50. And for the next week we prayed

that the weather would be kind so we could finish the match.

Day two saw Fulham strike early, and at 4/82 it was game on. Nathan Marshall and Thomas Brown

steadied the ship and kept the scoreboard ticking over, before the Cook brothers, Harry and Jack,

finished the job off in the 35th over.


Congratulations to the boys who ended Fulham’s 4-year grip on the U13 Red shield, and thanks and

congratulations to Coach Jarrad Hoskin. While the win was nice, the true measure of success came from

the various spectators who noted the improvement in the boys from the first game to the last. Well

done Jarrad.

UNDER 13 WHITE

Overall, it has been a rollercoaster season for the whites, with close losses, games cancelled and

individual highlights. Although the team not getting the results desired, the team effort and attitude

each week was superb. A very young team, with many players eligible for under 11’s, the team pushed

past low numbers, strong opposition and inconsistent weather to produce a great season.

A nail bitting finish to the West Torrens derby, an action packed 10/10 carnival for some and restricting

top teams to low scores was some of the team’s highlights, but by far the best game for the team was

a courageous 2nd innings performance against top team Flinders Park. Trying to save an outright loss,

everyone toughed it out, facing many overs and not giving their wickets away to eventually save the

outright. This performance summed up the year, not getting the large goal but still having the right

attitude and intent. Some individuals performances included a 2 wicket haul for Jack Baum and Sasha

Lanzoni, 2 wickets and 20+ runs each for Ryan Paul and Jack Cook, a captains wicket for Finley Workman

on his birthday and a unfinished team hat-trick for Brodie, zero byes for Tyson Burns, Lokesh Kumar

bowling one the best overs in the season and finally 6no, 15no and 17rt, for Krish Thakker, Jack Gray

and Rob Bracci respectively. Huge thanks for all the parents for making trips to/from training and games,

and especially Anthony Baum and Tim Cook for scoring and helping with the team.

bat and ball, The boys worked hard in the field and will learn a lot from this loss

Another great fighting effort by our boys saw Fulham Red just get the chocolates late in the game with

the bat.

Jake Hill, Finn Crouch and Luke Pope were solid with the batting, while a great team effort with the

bowling and fielding kept the Reds on their toes,

Super impressive bowling and fielding pressure by our boys put Grange Blue up against the wall and

they were all out quite early in to the game, Tom Hill led the way batting with great support from his

team mates with the ball, super team effort by all!

"Round 9"

The boys headed down the road to take on their rivals Flinders Park Red in games which always go down

to the wire, Luke Pope and young James Turner were good with the bat and Patreek led the way with

his bowling, while Finn Crouch was dynamite with his two run outs within minutes set the standard for

the rest off the game, Jake Hill’s disciplined batting performance led others to follow and set the game

up to win quite comfortably in the end. A great team effort to finish off the year and the boys should

be really proud of their progress this year!

This is a great team of young boys who love this game, They are proud of this great club and I'm sure

that they will be leaders of the mighty Eagles in time to come.

A Big thank-you to all the parents that have helped with scoring, umpiring, warm ups, game day

coordination with batting, bowling etc and the cooking and serving of the BBQ this season !!

Bruce Dooland is arguably the most outstanding bowler ever produced by the West Torrens/Hindmarsh

C.C. A leg spin bowler, he stood just over six feet tall (183 cm.) and weighed about twelve and a half

stone (79.5 kg.). He was a more than useful batter and a brilliant catcher in the slips cordon. He mixed

his leg breaks with a wrong-un, a top spinner and is credited with introducing the flipper to Richie

Benaud. Some say it could actually be heard fizzing on its way to the batsman. Bruce was marginally

quicker than most other leg spinners and often delivered the ball with his front foot behind the bowling

crease, while his height enabled him to make the ball lift awkwardly but the turn he gained was

controlled rather than prodigious. Bruce began to learn the art of spin bowling on a concrete pitch laid

down in the back yard of their Hounslow Ave home in Cowandilla by his father.

Bruce left Thebarton Central School (later Thebarton Boys Technical High School) at fourteen to attend

Adelaide High School in 1938. He began the 1938-39 season with the Adelaide High 1st XI where he

took 72 wickets in the eight games of his first season and come under the notice of the West Torrens

selectors. During the 1939 January school vacation he was first chosen for the Eagles in the third team

which played in the Adelaide Turf C.A. However after one game was promoted to the Bs where he took

5/93 against Prospect. At the beginning of the new school year he was back with Adelaide High School

and there he remained until the end of the 1939 school year. However a multitude of wickets at the

start of the 1939-40 season in five games for Adelaide High which included 8 wickets v. Sacred Heart

and 10 v. Scotch College, saw him elevated straight into A grade when his school commitments had

concluded.

At age seventeen he was selected for South Australia but his employers wouldn’t allow him time off

from the SA Savings Bank, so he had to wait until 1945-46 for his first class debut. As first class cricket

was suspended during World War 2 Bruce enlisted in the Australian Armed Forces and served with a

commando unit on South Pacific Islands where he contracted malaria.

As part of his engagements against the Japanese he was part of a special unit which was dropped behind

enemy lines in Borneo in 1945. Ironically it was another South Australian First class cricketer Tom

O’Connell who was the navigator on the Catalina which rescued the raiding party.

The war in the Pacific was over when the Japanese surrendered in September 1945 and by December

of the same year he played his initial first class match with five other debutants Chester Bennett, Gil

Langley, Bob McLean, Reg Craig and Colin Webb. South Australia struggled in this match against New

South Wales, with Ron Hamence, who scored 75 n.o. (including 22 from a Ray Lindwall over) and 75,

standing alone amongst the batters. Bruce took the first post war Sheffield Shield hat trick in a the next


match which was against Victoria at the Junction Oval, St. Kilda. He was then selected for the 1946 tour

of New Zealand, along with Ron Hamence from West Torrens. However they did not play in the sole

Test.

He was first selected at Test level for the Third Test against England at the MCG in January 1947 and

took the wickets of Cyril Washbrook, Wally Hammond, Jack Ikin and Bill Voce in the first innings and

Washbrook again in the second. He was chosen again for the Fourth Test in Adelaide and his then

employer, the Bank of Adelaide, required him to work until 10 a.m. each working day of the Test. He

would then walk out of the back door of the Bank with his cricket gear packed in a Gladstone Bag and

catch a tram to Adelaide Oval just in time for the start of play. Although Bruce disposed of Washbrook

(for the fourth time in succession), Bill Edrich and Ikin in the first innings he was dropped for the final

test. He regained his place for the Third Test against India the following season, a Test in which West

Torrens’ Ron Hamence also played.

Bruce played only three tests, but was also chosen in an Australian baseball team and hit the golf ball

off a seven handicap. After missing selection in the 1948 Australian team he was understandably

disappointed, particularly as many of his contemporaries regarded him as a far better leg spinner than

either Doug Ring or Colin McCool who were chosen in his stead. Lala Armanath, captain of the 1947-48

Indian tourists also expressed his bewilderment at the omission of Dooland. Later career statistics show

that a great player had slipped through Australia’s fingers. Consequently he went to England and played

professional cricket for East Lancashire from 1949 to 1952, twice assisting the Club to the double of the

Lancashire League and Worsley Cups. In his four seasons with East Lancashire he took 361 wickets at

10.0 and scored 2688 runs at 38.4. He was the first Australian Professional at East Lancashire but was

followed by another former Test team mate Colin McCool. Then came a hoard of other Aussie first class

players including Kerry O’Keefe, Allan Border, Peter Sleep, Paul Reiffel and in 1998 and 2001 West

Torrens’ Brad Young.

After four seasons in the Lancashire League Bruce qualified to play county cricket for Nottinghamshire.

Notts was at a low ebb and Dooland was their initial overseas import brought in specifically to

strengthen the team. He played his first game against Kent at Trent Bridge in 1953 and achieved the

remarkable feat of being ‘capped’ in his first year with the county. Bruce took 518 wickets in his first

three seasons with the county, with at least 150 in each of those seasons, and stayed with Notts for five

years, taking more than 100 first class wickets every season. His 181 wickets at 14.96 in 1954, remains

the record for the highest number of wickets taken in a season for Nottinghamshire and is unlikely to

be overhauled with the present format of English County cricket. In 1953 he missed the ‘double’ of 1000


runs and 100 wickets by 30 runs. Near the end of that season he took 22 wickets in the two Somerset

games. The following season he took 196 wickets (not all for Notts), only rain at the Torquay Festival

robbing him of the coveted 200, but he reached the ‘double’, a feat he repeated in 1957. During those

first two seasons his skill ensured that he was selected for the Players (professionals) against the

Gentlemen (amateurs) at Lords.

Bruce toured India in 1950-51 with a Commonwealth team, which was led by former England and Kent

wicketkeeper-batsman Les Ames. He proved to be an outstanding success as an all rounder, especially

with the bat, averaging 50 during the series of five unofficial Tests, when India was able to field full

strength teams. He scored 830 runs on tour and took 60 wickets. The highlights were an innings of 108

in the first ‘Test’ at New Delhi, followed by a dour defensive 106 in the second innings of the third ‘Test’

at Calcutta to make the game safe after India had led by 240 on the first innings. He concluded a very

successful tour with 105 against a combined India-Pakistan-Ceylon XI at Colombo.

In first class cricket Dooland took an incredible 1016 wickets including five or more in an innings 84

times and ten wickets in a match 23 times. His best match figures were 16/83 against Essex at Trent

Bridge in May 1954 and 15/193 versus Kent at Gravesend in June 1956. His best bowling figures in an

innings were a remarkable 8/20 against Worcestershire. England opener Don Kenyon hit 10 from

Bruce’s first over, but the next 18 overs yielded him 8/10 including 14 maidens and Worcester was

routed for 71. He followed up with 5/59 in the second innings.(Notts 272 d. Worcester 71 and 139)

Bruce’s highest first class score was a century for Notts against Sussex at Worthing in 1957, a match in

which he also took 10/102. His batting historically has taken a back seat to his bowling but he was a

very competent batsman with his perceived strengths lying in his driving and cutting.

At the end of the 1957 English season he left Notts and returned to Adelaide for the benefit of his

children’s education. Following his departure, Notts had their worst-ever period in terms of results.

With Notts he took 748 wickets and compiled 4492 runs.

His first game after returning was at Thebarton Oval and as he was one of the Eagles’ favourite sons a

crowd of about 1000 turned out to welcome him. He did not disappoint them routing East Torrens with

12/67. He played in that year’s premiership side and coached West Torrens in 1960-61 and 1961-62

(Premiers). A shoulder injury forced Bruce into premature retirement from District cricket at the age of

34. However he did return as a guest player for a journalists team against an Adelaide College when in

his forties and took a hat trick. He later coached the Adelaide Club in SACA District cricket.

Ian attended Henley High School and after matriculating entered the Law School of the University of

Adelaide in 1964. He had played cricket for the West Torrens U16 Schoolboys team (Xmas vacation) in

the 1961-62 season and also played for the Henley Cricket Club (at Henley Oval) for three seasons

leading them to the ATCA A4 Premiership in 1963-64 at the age of 17, a side which also contained other

future A Graders in Jeff Barnes and Kevin Griffiths.

Short in stature but large in heart and character, Ian was an entertaining and technically correct top

order batsman who headed the SACA Club Batting Aggregate with 740 runs in 1977-78 and was a

brilliant fielder. His A Grade debut for West Torrens was against Sturt at Thebarton Oval in October

1968 while his 4995 A Grade runs rank him 8th on the all-time A Grade batting Aggregates for the Club.

During his 163 game, 15 seasons career he scored three A Grade centuries

In a rare sojourn in the Bs he scored 108 v. University at A.A.Bailey Reserve in December 1973 – Bailey

Reserve was the home ground of West Torrens at the time when Thebarton was out of action for a

season.

Ian also captained the As from 1974-75 to 1976-77. He handed the leadership role to David Hookes

after Christmas in the latter season but was ordered from the ground by Hookes when an indiscreet shy

at the stumps was considered by the new skipper ‘frivolous’. He was the Eagles’ Premier Batsman


(Highest Average) on 5 occasions. In addition to his high performances with the bat for West Torrens,

four unfortunate opposition batters succumbed to his right arm ‘innocuous nothings’. Ian scored a

further 1301 A Grade runs in his four seasons with University and captained that team in 1967-68.

‘Edge’ was also a very accomplished footballer. In his four years at University he was named as All

Australian University captain in both 1966 and 1967 and won the Best and Fairest medal at the

Australian Universities carnival in Tasmania in 1967. After his Uni years he turned out with West

Adelaide from 1968 to 1971 when he played three SANFL league matches and captained the reserves

in his last three seasons.

Ian had a wonderful sense of humour and wore a cheeky ‘Jack Nicholson’ grin which would often erupt

into a contagious belly laugh. On other occasions he would hide his humour behind a stern face while

‘taking the piss’. The quickness of his wit was shown during a match at Woodville Oval. Eagle’s keeper

Mick Brien stumped a batsman off leggie Kevin Lewis. The officious officiating square leg umpire was

John Wilson who remarked to Mick as he was re-building the wicket

“Mick you came perilously close to taking that ball in front of the stumps”

The captain and legal eagle at slips retorted

“You are allowed to”

Wilson “You are NOT Edge”

Edge “You are”

Wilson “Definitely NOT”

The repartee continued for some time until the exasperated umpire exclaimed

“What are you on about Edge?”

Edge “The wicket keeper is definitely allowed to come perilously close to taking the ball in front of

the stumps”.

All in the vicinity including the perpetrator (but not the red faced umpire) burst into uncontrolled

laughter.

He was a life long friend of David Hookes and became his Manager and legal advisor. When David was

inexplicably sacked from the South Australia captaincy (co-incidentally 2 short of Les Favell’s record) he

rang Chairman of Selectors Murray Sargeant who did not return his calls. Hookesy then turned to Edge

who immediately called ‘Sarge’ demanding an urgent reply as “ there may be legal repercussions”. Sarge

quickly returned the call when legalities were mentioned and said that he was hitting off at Kooyonga

G.C. at 9.30 a.m. next day. Edge said he and David would be there. He called David and said to be at the

K.G.C. at 9.40 (just to inconvenience the C. of S.).


Next morning David asked why he had been deposed. A none too happy “Sarge’ (who had missed his

tee off time) replied that the selectors felt it was time for a change BUT added

“David you are still the KING out there!”

The quick witted solicitor promptly interjected

“What an incredible situation – a King executed by a Sargeant!”

After 9 years at the helm of the West Torrens District Cricket Club, John Lynch decided to stand down

as the Club’s President/Chairman at the end of 2006-07. The reins were handed over to the Life Member

and former A Grade captain. He was superbly qualified to guide the West Torrens Cricket Club into the

future with excellent administrative experience and fine on-field credentials. Unfortunately he had to

step down after 2 seasons due to his first severe bout of ill health from which he recovered and his

family and friends were able to enjoy his company for another eight years.

Ian continued to work in Commercial law and was a partner and In-house consultant in the legal firm of

Andersons Solicitors until a few weeks before his demise.

He leaves his widow Rosemary, who has shown incredible strength in her caring for him and through

her grief, three wonderful daughters Melissa, Kirsty and Amy, their spouses Ben, Scott and Alex and

grandchildren Max, Gus, Mia, Tom and Sebastian.

In excess of 600 people attended his funeral at the West Adelaide Football Club. His Obit card concluded
