Uranus By Roark Stephens

Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun. It is named after the

Greek god of the sky. Uranus was the first planet to be discovered by telescope. It has 27 moons and is the coldest planet in our solar system. Uranus is made up of hydrogen, helium and methane. The methane scatters blue light, which is why Uranus appears blue.

Neptune

By Livius Hardes

Neptune is the eighth planet in the solar system. Neptune is a large water planet. It is named after the Roman god of the sea. Neptune was discovered by Jean Joseph Le Verrier in 1846 and the first moon was also found and named Triton. Neptune has 13 moons.

Neptune is the farthest planet from the sun in the solar

system. It takes Neptune 16.8 earth years to orbit the sun. It is one of the four gas giants. It is a great ball of hydrogen and gas. There are also storms swirling around its surface and freezing winds that blow about ten times faster than hurricanes on Earth. Neptune is an amazing planet.

The Dog That Roams the Sea

by: Eva Sprenger

Imagine yourself swimming in the ocean and seeing a fin. Would you believe that the fin could actually belong to a dog? The fin doesn’t actually belong to a dog, it belongs to a dogfish shark. Many people study the anatomy of this shark. People are also curious about their habitat. Scientists also research their diet and feeding. There are some interesting facts that you might enjoy learning about. This shark is very unique.

Many people study the anatomy of this shark. The

shark has many unique features. The dogfish shark has countershading. It is gray with white spots on top and has a light cream color on the bottom. Unlike most humans dogfish shark females are larger than males. The shark has teeth like scales all over its body. They are called dermal denticles. The sharks can be kind of dangerous because they have poisonous spines.

People are also curious about their habitat. This

shark can go deep. This shark is a bottom dweller, it likes to be in salt waters and is mostly 3,000 feet down in the

ocean. It likes to be in coastal waters and, is mostly found in the Atlantic,Pacific and Indian ocean.

Scientists also research their diet and feeding. This shark is a carnivore it eats only meat. It attacks other animals twice their size! It eats other sharks, squids, fish and other animals. This shark hunts in groups. When it hunts it takes large bites and rips the animal into pieces.

There are some particular facts that you might enjoy learning about. In Europe, if you order fish and chips, you will probably be eating a dogfish shark. Some of these sharks can glow in the dark! This is called bioluminescent. This shark’s skin was once used to polish things. There are 119 species of dogfish sharks. This shark has more species than any other shark

These sharks might be smaller than most sharks, but

that doesn't mean that they are not unique! Their anatomy helps them be streamlined. These sharks swim around in global oceans. Dogfish sharks can eat the same things as humans. This shark is a mix of a shark and kind of a dog, dog + shark = dogfish shark!

Dogs of the Sea by: Kate Stephens

As you play in the ocean there might be a dog under you

that is one of the predators of the sea. There actually isn't a real dog under you, but it might be a dogfish shark. People study the anatomy of the dogfish shark. The habitat of the dogfish shark is different than our own. You don't want to join this shark for dinner, even if you want to learn about their diet and feeding. The dogfish shark is begging you to learn more.

People study the anatomy of the dogfish shark. The dogfish shark is dark gray on the top and a creamish color on the bottom. It also has spots. These colors camouflage the dogfish shark from predators. The dogfish shark has four different types of fins. There are the dorsal fins, the pectoral fins, the pelvic fins, and the caudal fin. This shark has two spines located near the dorsal fins. The dogfish shark also has teeth-like scales that are called dermal denticles. The males and only the males have claspers, but females are larger than the males. The dogfish shark usually grows up to four feet long, and has a short snout called a rostrum. The habitat of the dogfish shark is different than our own. The habitat is different because humans live on land, and the dogfish shark lives in the water. These sharks can go down 3000 ft deep, but they also live in shallow waters. Dogfish sharks are usually found in water temperatures 49-59 Fahrenheit. You can find them in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The dogfish sharks are bottom dwellers. These sharks live in coastal waters too, and only in salt water.

You don't want to join this shark for dinner even if you want to learn about diet and feeding. You don't want to because they

have a large bite and rip their prey to pieces. The dogfish sharks are carnivores. That means they only eat meat. Some of their prey is fish, squid, and shrimp. These sharks sweep areas clearing them out of fish.

If people didn't study the anatomy of the dogfish shark we

wouldn't know as much as we know about the dogfish shark today. If the habitat of the dogfish shark was the same as our own it wouldn't be unique. If you're planning to join the dogfish shark for dinner I'm telling you now it's a bad idea, so you might want to cancel it. Thanks for coming along. Now, the dogfish sharks can stop begging you to read more.

Dogs Of The Ocean by: Mia Lutz

There are hundreds of thousands of dogs in the sea.

They are not really dogs and they don’t look like dogs, they are dogfish sharks. The anatomy is the study of the body. Many people study the anatomy of the dogfish shark. The habitat of the

dog like creature is in the depths of the ocean. This shark also has special features.

The anatomy is the study of the body. Many people study the anatomy of the dogfish shark. The dogfish shark has countershading, so it's gray on top and creamy white on the bottom. On its body the shark has little teeth that are called dermal denticles. Female sharks are bigger than male sharks. Male sharks have claspers. The dogfish has four different types of fins: the dorsal fins, pectoral fins, pelvic fins, as well as the caudal fin. Near the dorsal fins are poisonous spines that are like dog’s nails. The spiracles are small holes next to the eye, so they can transfer water into the mouth while resting or eating.

The habitat of the dog like creature is the depths of the ocean. They live in salt water, that means the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean. The dogs can go down 3,000 feet deep. This sharks can also live in the shallows. They can be bottom dwellers. The water temperature is mostly between 49-59 degrees fahrenheit warm. The coastal water also perfect for the dogs.

These sharks have unique features. These sharks do not

have bones, they have cartilage. Their habitat is special because they can live in very deep water, as well as in shallow areas. If you want to catch one, you will need to dive very deep, or just walk around in shallow areas.

The Titanic Essay By Vanessa Lewandowski

Introduction… Did you know the Titanic was a well known ship and once

the world's largest ship? The ship was designed by Thomas Andrews and the captain was Edward James Smith. Also, the Titanic was built by a company called Harland and Wolff. The ship's construction cost about $7,500,000, a stunning estimate of $174,000,000 in today's money. After construction, the ship was claimed to be unsinkable. This was because the ship had 2 overflow rooms and if they were filled with water, the ship would still stay afloat and everyone could make it to land safely. Ch. 1- Features

The Titanic had many fancy features to accommodate passengers. There were game rooms and dining areas. Most passengers had enjoyable accommodations. The quality of your ride would depend of the ticket you bought. Third class was the worst offering only a ride. There were 416 first class rooms, 162 second class rooms, and 262 third class rooms. There were 578 passenger rooms in total. The prices varied from $350-$100,000. Even the third class rooms where not dreadful to stay in for the just the trip. Unlike first and second class, third class could not leave their rooms to enjoy the morning breeze and smell the fresh air of the ocean. Ch. 2 The Ship's Route

On Wednesday, 4/10/1912, the RMS Titanic left Southampton England and traveled to Cherbourg, France. On

23

Page 24: Eagle Creek Academy with video game maker, Atari. Steve Jobs was a great inventor and entrepreneur. In 1970, he helped start the Apple company. In 1977, the Apple ll personal computer

Thursday, 4/11/1912, The Titanic arrived In Cobh, Ireland and then headed to New York picking up many passengers along the way. Then the Titanic headed out into the Atlantic Ocean. The voyage was going to take four days until nature cut it short.

Ch. 3-The Ship’s People First and second class people often were wealthy first class costed much more than third or second class. Some of the passengers were well known, like Thomas Andrews the designer, and Edward John Smith the captain. On the other hand, there was the third class passengers who were poor. The third class passengers were locked in their rooms during their entire ride. To top it off, their rooms were in the bottom of the ship so they were more likely to drown if the ship sunk. Ch. 4 The Iceberg

Late night early morning, the ship hit ice at around 11:40 p.m. Captain Smith ignored six ice warnings knowing he was in icy water he did not choose to change course. He did not see the iceberg until it was too late for anything to be done. On April 14, 1912 the ship went down. It took around 2 hours and 40 minutes for the ship to be submerged fully. Captain Smith, as well as

24

Page 25: Eagle Creek Academy with video game maker, Atari. Steve Jobs was a great inventor and entrepreneur. In 1970, he helped start the Apple company. In 1977, the Apple ll personal computer

Thomas Andrews went down with the ship. The ship's sinking was a famous event in history and is still remembered today. Ch. 5- Survivors

After the ship's sinking, 31.6% of the people on the lived. The survivors were mainly first class woman and children. This was because first class woman and children were let off first. Some second class passengers survived as well, but only about 25% of third class passengers survived. 705 people lived in total including crew members out of the 2208 people who were on the ship. Not everyone received lifeboats but it was possible to live using other ways. Like using a large piece of debris as a boat. Eventually passengers were forced to evacuate the ship or go down with it. Conclusion

Many unpleasant things happened during the Titanic's sinking. For example, many people perished during the tragic event. Another example is many people could have been saved if the captain was more careful. The ship went down in a somewhat unknown location. This was until it was found many years later by Robert Ballard. The ship was found in 1985 by following a trail of debris. Middle School Short Story

Ivor the Twisted By Blake Stephens

One day, in the Kingdom Televia, a very careless peasant named Samson went to fetch water from the well. He was angry, as the king was taxing the citizens to pay for the for the crops that he had to buy from other kingdoms, to feed his people. “Stupid king, why could he not grow crops himself?” He mumbled as he drew the water from the well, he did not bother looking for holes in the bucket. As he got home and night fell, he realized the bucket was full of holes, and the water was dirty. As he poured the little water still in the bucket into his pitcher he realized he also forgot to gather firewood to stay warm. As he neared the edge of the forest he heard a voice. “Hey come over here! I can get you gold!” As Samson walked over he saw a dead oak tree, and said, “These branches are perfect for firewood.” “WAIT!” A voice cried. Samson looked down to find a face on the tree. “The amount of gold I can get you can buy your firewood for the rest of your life, but you will have to give something back.”

26

Page 27: Eagle Creek Academy with video game maker, Atari. Steve Jobs was a great inventor and entrepreneur. In 1970, he helped start the Apple company. In 1977, the Apple ll personal computer

“Whatever you want!” Samson said. The tree responded, “If you get me the lumberjack’s best ax, then you will have a tree of gold, double the size of me!” “You have a deal!” said Samson. “But on one condition: if you can't get it to me before the lumberjacks third trip, then you will help me in my mission.” Said the tree. “What mission?” wondered Samson as he walked back to the house. As the clock struck three o’clock, the lumberjack made his first trip. Samson watched as he went by. “Ah, I'll ask on his next trip” said Samson. Samson was tired from gathering firewood the previous night. He dozed off thinking it was no big deal. At noon, the lumberjack went by Samson's house, and Samson missed was sleeping. Not realizing he'd slept through one trip, when the lumberjack came he thought “I still have one trip, why not read a book”. As Samson waited, the lumberjack never came. He got so tired he fell asleep in his chair. That night Samson had horrible nightmares. The tree was crying you're mine now! MINE! And his skin was turning to twisted bark. He woke up with a fright, and as he calmed down he went to the well. All the people he went by screamed and ran. Samson didn't know what had happened. As he drew the water from the well, he didn't check for holes. One villager said “Umm, sir, your bucket is leaking”. As Samson looked down, he dropped the bucket of clear water that he stained with reflection of a nightmarish monster. As Samson ran to the forest, he found the dead oak with a face, and he yelled: “What have you done to me!?” “I have completed the deal.” he said simply. “What? You, you, you, mon-” “Oh, stop right there. My name is Malculinus. You will help me now or else-” Samson felt a stabbing pain in his leg, as his foot, or branch where his foot would be, started to disappear to gold dust. As the stabbing pain receded, his branch came back. Malculinus said “ You are to sneak through the village, and to the center of The Outback to find the evil Book of Deception. There will be multiple fake copies, the real one will have a fox

on it. From now on Samson Enguerrand is pronounced dead, and Ivor the Twisted has moved in.” As Ivor ran off, green tears streamed down his face. At midnight, Ivor ran through the village and made it to The Outback, where there is no night, only scorching sun. As Ivor moved on, a kangaroo saw him and hopped over. The kangaroo said “who are you?”, Ivor was so surprised he fell down. As he got up he said, “I'm Sams- I'm, Ivor.” “Hmmm, okay, why are you here?” Hesitant to respond, Ivor said “ I must find the great oasis.” The kangaroo seemed puzzled, but then said, “You look tired, would you like to take a break in my cave?” “No thank you.” said, Ivor, as he walked away. As the trek across The Outback turned to days, Ivor found a book on a pedestal, he figured it must be the right one, because how many books on pedestals are there in The Outback? So he grabbed it and ran, not looking at the cover. After running for only 5 minutes he came across a huge plateau, with the only way to go being a maze of caves. As he progressed a skeleton gave him a key and said “Choose a door to put a key in. Each door leads out, but only one lock will extricate. The key will set off a horrible reaction if you do not think about it and do a sufficient job.” “Sounds good,” said Ivor as he walked through a large hallway until he reached three doors, he carelessly was about to put the key in a keyhole when a bat flew down and said “All the key holes will release a deadly dragon, I will show you how to escape.” The bat flew to a lock made of bones, and with a bite she shattered the lock. Before even thanking her, Ivor found the Valley of Oblivion and walked for two days before he started realizing what he would do when he got back. Ivor’s head was full of ideas, but then he thought “this is all the king's fault” and got so angry he swore to spend the rest of his life as Ivor the Twisted, and to kill the unfair king at all costs. As the sun neared the middle of the sky, a man riding a white horse yelled “Samson, you don't need to do this!”

28

“Oh, foolish king, I do,” Ivor responded calmly. His fingers grew into long wooden blades and a voice in the back of his head said, “Use the energy!” As Ivor ran towards the king, he drew his sword. Ivor stopped, thrust out his sword studded hands, and a force more than 1000 bulls knocked the king off his horse. As Ivor walked towards the king, the kangaroo came hopping across the desert terrain, and as he was about to get ran into the ground, Ivor dodged the attack and used his force. The King tossed the kangaroo a necklace with a sun on it, as it touched the red fur of the kangaroo it glowed with great light and absorbed all the force. The kangaroo took a great leap and landed before Ivor. He leaned back on his tail, drew back his legs, and with the of 1000 bulls, launched Ivor into the Valley of Oblivion, and to this day he is still falling. As the king and the kangaroo walked and hopped back to town the king said, “Thank you for being a great guardian of the book.” The kangaroo said, “I just wish I could have helped Samson.” The king responded “As much as it pains me to say this, Samson is gone. And so is Ivor the Twisted”.
