President’s Message

The weekend in LaConner was most informative and enjoyable.

I was able to hang out with like minded folks and sit in on a board meeting. Morgan owners have a fierce loyalty to their

marque and don‟t hesitate to bring their concerns forward.

That‟s a good thing.

My objective is to do what‟s best for our club. It‟s good to note that that wisdom does not originate or reside in a single source.

Thus, I would encourage you to communicate freely with any or

all of the Board members. Our email addresses are shown be-

low and we welcome your comments.

After receiving the sacred gavel (made from Morgan factory

white ash, no doubt) I felt rather like the Captain of a Unitarian

sailing ship wherein the crew discuss among themselves and

then talk to the officers who then meet on the poop deck to arrive at a consensus and set the course. The Captain just conducts the meeting and steers the boat. You decide

the direction.

Pleasantly, my first official duty was to accept the membership application for Maggi

and Doug McClure who will be joining us in Burt McCabe‟s 1963 4/4. Welcome aboard!!

After spending the weekend with such a great group I‟m optimistic for our future. Drive On,

Dick

A Very Wet “Hearts and Tarts” by Steve Blake

On Saturday, February 12th, we set out from Gardenworks at Mandeville on the Hearts

and Tarts Run. It was a very wet day and most Morgans were tucked away in their ga-

rages praying for warmer, dryer weather. Our drive was joined by a contingent of Old

English Car Club members which made for a nice assortment of cars and a genuine ca-maraderie that only those who share Lucas can appreciate.

The hearty of the group were Ron and Yvonne Theroux, Terry and Val Sadler, Ken and

Pat Miles, Mike and Rosemarie Powley, and Bob and Judy McDiarmid who all drove their

Morgans in spite of the inclement weather. Powley‟s baled after the raccoon tail on

Mike‟s hat soaked with so much water that it wouldn‟t keep extended behind him. They returned to Ocean Park, changed cars and joined us back at Sharkey‟s for lunch.

The drive was doomed from the start. We had about 17 cars but no count was made at

the beginning. With the assorted global tin, including a van pulling an Austin pedal car,

there was no way in the rain we could differentiate who was on the drive with those just out driving. Instructions at the start called for a regrouping after the first left turn

from Byrne Road to Marine Way. I was the only car to get through the traffic light. Two

lights later, with an assortment of cars behind me, we started again, crossing the

Queensborough Bridge. Too bad for the cars that missed the turn off the bridge! Susan and I sat on the side of the road watching cars roar past on the freeway and de-

cided to forget them and carry on with the 10 cars that were able to figure out that my

blue Mini Clubman with the yellow ball on the antenna was indeed the lead car. Not

sure why I was missed by a couple cars that drove right past us on the side of the

road! The drive continued from this point without incident along River Road beside the north

arm of the Fraser River. We decided to ditch a segment of the drive due to time and

weather and took a shortcut down Highway 99, through the tunnel, exiting along a dif-

ferent stretch of River Road into Ladner. Our 10 cars arrived at Sharkey‟s to find the rest of the crew already there with drinks ordered! At least everyone enjoyed their

drives and all made it to the restaurant, with the exception of one or two OECC people

who may not have planned to do the drive.

BIENNIAL MOGNW BANQUET 2011

by Dave Wellington

As I write this article there is 6” of snow

outside and Camano Island has come to a

standstill! Hard to believe that just 4 days ago we enjoyed blue, sunny skies for our

Biennial Banquet in La Conner on Sat.

2/19/2011. The Morgan gods of Malvern

definitely smiled on us! At 5:30 pm our

party got underway as member Graham Bailey, Bagpiper extraordinaire, escorted all

of us down the main street of La Conner to

our destination, The Seafood & Prime Rib

House. The locals may have been bewil-dered by the spectacle but they allowed our

entourage to pass without incident.

Our restaurant featured waterfront dining

with the Swinomish Slough being illumi-

nated by a full moon. Kay Jones graciously hosted the President‟s Reception which in-

cluded appetizers and a most generous sup-

ply of complimentary wines. In keeping with our black and red color theme, red carna-

tions and MOGNW logo ravens were displayed throughout the room.

The buffet offered Salmon and Prime Rib entrees and all the trimmings. No one went

away hungry and the desert of Apple Crisp ala mode provided a tasty finish to a de-

lightful meal.

The program began with President Kay raising a glass to toast the memory of those

who have passed on since our last meeting 2 years ago. Members Bob Couch, Ron

Weiskind, Liz Blake, Bert McCabe and Craig Runions will not soon be forgotten.

Several new members were introduced. These included Chris and Carolyn Wray from

Lions Bay, B.C., Mark and Rita Harbaugh from Gig Harbor, Wa., the McClure family

(Doug, Maggi, and son Finnigan) from Vashon Island, and Cati Waterman from Port-

land, Or. Maggi is Bert McCabe‟s daughter and has inherited Bert‟s “beastie”! Grand-son, Finnigan, will no doubt be the 3rd generation Morgan owner someday. Congrats to

Cati who is Dee Buffum‟s daughter for having the courage to “join up” and immediately

take on the responsibilities as our new club treasurer. Bravo! We welcome all of you!

MOGNW needs „new blood‟ and we encourage your input, fresh ideas, and

enthusiasm.

The program proceeded in typical

MOGNW fashion. Amid much frivolity,

sarcasm, and “one- upsmanship” the business of the club was accom-

plished! The gavel was passed from

retiring Pres. Kay Jones (after serving

two 2-year terms: 1999, 2000 & 2009, 2010) to incoming Pres. Dick

Tilden. In a ceremony which would

have done Doris Day proud, Dick pre-

sented Kay with 2 bottles of Sirah. (Que Sera. Sera------get it?!) Past

pres. Wayne Harris and newbie Pres. Tilden treated us to some southern pod banter

(as they are prone to do!) and Wayne offered outgoing Pres.Kay some fine vintage

wines, to the envy of everyone present.

The next order of business was the presentation of our traditional Biennial Awards. Mike Powley properly embarrassed Steve Hutchens with the Perpetual Turn Signal Award. It

was reported by Ken Miles that Steve‟s left signal blinked for 17 miles on a Northern

Pod Run in Nov. 2010! Hutchens graciously accepted his well deserved award and then

took the opportunity to make The Rough Riders Award presentation. Steve had won

the trophy 2 years before for „falling off a ladder‟. (It must have been a very „rough ride‟ down!) The new recipient was Bob McDiarmid. On our club‟s Centenary Run in

July 2009, Bob‟s engine died on Hwy. 30 east of Astoria. This resulted in a long ride

home for the Morgan atop a flatbed truck! The third and final trophy of the evening,

the prestigious Press On Regardless Award, went to Ken Miles. The story goes like this: While on a Morgans Over America

ralleye in Montana, various bits and

pieces from the engine fell into Ken‟s pis-

tons ------well, actually it was the Mor-gan‟s pistons ------producing a most wor-

risome „clatter‟! A sage mechanic‟s ad-

vice was to tow the injured vehicle back

to B.C. Later Mike discovered that if he

had just removed the plugs he could have blown out the foreign material which may

have come from his carburetor. In retro-

spect, he should have “pressed on re-

gardless”, done a roadside repair and continued on the

ralleye!

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who

helped make this event a success. Steve Hutchens was

invaluable by designing and ordering new name tags

as party favors. The attendees all thought they were

pretty cool with the magnetic backs. (For those mem-bers who would like to order a tag on-line, details will

be given elsewhere in this Mogazine issue.) Mike Amos

deserves special thanks for handing out collectible post-

age stamps featuring 4 different Morgan pictures. There were enough to give a complimentary stamp to each

couple attending. Where in the world does Mike come

up with this neat stuff? Go ahead and ask him but don‟t

expect an answer! One of the banquet highlights was our club‟s march down La Conner‟s main street led by

Graham Bailey‟s masterful “piping”. It‟s no easy feat to

play bagpipes continuously for fifteen minutes while

walking in the cold. Only a „bag of wind‟ like Graham could pull this off, so we all „tip our tams‟ to him!!

And finally I want to express my gratitude to all 72

participants. The grand turnout and the magnificent

weather made for a truly memorable party. Our next 2

years is now properly launched and with the Southern Pod primarily running the show, MOGNW can look forward to an exciting and enjoyable ride!

About 30 members with their

cars, either Morgan or tin top

met at Tim Horton‟s on Hwy 10 and 96th St.

After coffee, donuts, etc. we

got in our cars to follow Mike

Powley (no maps or directions

given) while he meandered through the countryside of

At times we thought Mike was

lost as he took some convo-luted turns to make a U turn.

MOGNW Magnetic name tags with raven logo

Several members have asked how to go about getting magnetic name tags like those distributed at the Biennial Banquet. Here's how you proceed in about 10 easy (?) steps at the link below: https://www.nametagcountry.com/product/Nametags_Plastic_Full_Color_High_Gloss?rid=5d2b357e-63b7-4fd7-89a8-a0bb8b8ed5f1

1. First a picture of our MOGNW tag is displayed. Enter the number of tags you want to order and select BEGIN ORDER

2. DO NOT change size. Click NEXT

3. Select Magnet . (costs $1.50 more than pin backs)

4. IMPORTANT! Do not click on 'please select' navy box above tag picture!

5. Click NEXT

6. Under PROVIDE LOGO click "use logo in design I selected", then click NEXT.

7. Type info for your tag: Line 1 First Name

Line 2 Last Name

Line 3 City and State

8. Our Raven Logo format is termed a "reorder design"

9. From there on it's pretty self-explanatory. You will need to set up your own acct. and password, give credit card info and shipping address. Free postage for routine first class postal delivery. There is no set up fee or sales tax. The cost per magnetic name tag for quantities up to ten is $8.10.

10. If you have questions call NameTagCountry at 1-800-206-4099. You can ask for Holly and remember that our tags are a "reorder design". Or you can reach Holly at: [email protected]

However in the end we got to Brownsville and had lunch in the local pub. Terry Sadler and Val nelson were the proud recipient of the eternal turn signal award. At the pub we

were joined by another six to eight members which resulted in quite a good turnout.

Thanks to Mike and Rosemary Powley for organizing the run.

Hello, Morganeers!

The Northern California Club is organizing another fantastic event this year at the Sonoma Historics on June 3rd to June 5th at the Infineon Raceway/Sear Point

Track. We hope to recreate some of the magic of the 2009 event with wonderful lodg-

ing, a Morgan concourse, a welcoming reception, and group activities like local drives

and wine tastings.

The two top hotel choices at this time are the Inn Marin in Novato and the Sheraton Inn

in Petaluma. If you are planning to attend or would like more information, it would be

great to get your response to this email. We are anticipating the number of rooms we might need and the general level of interest this year.

Email is a good way to contact me, as is my cell phone at (510) 459-6092.If you would

like to help host the event with time, meeting space, donations, or good ideas, please let me know.

Thank you,

FlogMog 15

Two Perspectives By Bill Button and Tom Henderson

The Northern California Morgan Club has an annual run called “FLOG MOG”. A couple of years ago this bunch joined us at “The Devil's Punchbowl”. I had been working with Northern Californian Gordon Craig to make this happen. It did not take me more than a millisecond to come to the conclusion that this is a group I wanted to join. Nothing about pristine, beautiful, original Morgans, they just wanted to drive their Morgans and drive them hard on all sorts of roads in all

sorts of conditions. With very careful negotiations I was able to get an invite to this years FLOG MOG. The invitation was served to me by John Grosseto this years leader and organizer. It was he that chose the roads we would drive. He called it “High Roller Tour”. It certainly was.

I decided to take my +4-4STR. It had been in Port Townsend on display at a “Classic Car Memorabilia shop for the last two years. It needed driving. As well it needed a lot of maintenance. It had fuel delivery problems. I tried one idea after another that did not work. I did not want to install an electric pump back by the tank because of wiring problems and the added installation of a kill switch in case of an accident. I bought a new fuel pump from British Parts NW, new hoses, checked connections and I had it fixed. Took a test drive and all was OK. At the same time I kept my +8 Bitsa up to snuff just in case. As I was leaving for California the +4 faltered. Fuel Starvation. No time to work on this, I transferred all my stuff into the Bitsa and off I went. Maybe the best for me. The Bitsa is very comfortable and I would be driving some long hours. I drove to Cave Junction, OR. I was to meet Larry Vail (MOGNW member lives in Crescent City) in the morning. We were to drive to Happy Camp and then on to Weaverville where we would meet the Flog Mog Participants. The roads were paved and good and what a joy to drive them. It took about 5 hours.

Tom here - I was possibly the last one to join FlogMog 15. The event hotel in Weaverville was the Forty Niner Gold Country Inn. Because I was late in joining the run I could not get a room there so I stayed at the Weaverville Hotel in the old town. This part of town is charming, but by the time you have made the short walk to the Forty Niner the charm has vanished. There were about 18 cars at FlogMog 15, including a Mazda Miata, a „60s Corvette, an Opel GT, and a 3 Series BMW convertible. I drove down and stayed with my sister in Grants Pass, OR on Wednesday, and continued on to Weaverville on Thursday. The drive down highway 3 from Yreka to Weaverville is a beautiful drive and a fun road to boot. A little out of Yreka you start going up hill and the road gets quite twisty. Then you reach the summit and start down the other side and it gets REALLY twisty. Having sold my Morgan a few weeks prior to the event, I was in my ‟07 Honda S2000 (yes, MSCCNC folks are just as easy going about that sort of thing as most other Morgan folks). I got into Weaverville early in the afternoon and met up with and met many of the participants. Button back in - At the 49er Motel in Weaverville the Flog Mogger's were just arriving. All but Gordon Craig. Gordon had disappeared. Later we found out that Gordon lost his water pump and arrived on a Flat Bed. There was an interesting collection of Morgans and other cars. Much to my surprise Tom Henderson showed up with his Honda S2000. There were two Morgans with S2000 engines, one with a Toyota Engine and one with a Toyota transmission. No Mog Snobs in this bunch for sure. In the morning after breakfast there was little action until John (Leader) yelled at me, c'mon lets go. It turns out the Flog Moggers are very informal. Sort of “If it feels good do it”. No time schedule or queuing up with nose counting etc. Off we went, John followed by Tom, then a 4Str, a DHC and myself. We would take the Southern Route. I must say it took all my ability plus the power of the Bitsa to keep up. Marg Naughton in her beautiful Black DHC (she has owned from the early '60's) is a superb driver. I first met Marg in 1999 on the Big Sur Hiway 1 where she passed me and not to be seen again until Cambria. No way could I match her driving ability. I think there are more curves per mile on this road than any other in the world. What fun and what a challenge. This was certainly not a “I want to see the scenery” sort of thing. Although we stayed within the speed limit we were in the upper range of it. A very good lunch in Eureka at a Brew Pub where we met the others. They had taken the Northern Route as most of them had come to Weaverville on the Southern Route. Back to Weaverville on the Northern Route. Much more relaxing but nevertheless a challenge.

Tom again - Friday morning I returned to the Forty Niner for the start of the run. John Grosseto had driven his Mazda Miata, and he and Roger McElroy left the Forty Niner, the first car out. John has

raced for years and these days races his Miata. You may have heard Miatas referred to as Girlie Cars. I can assure you that in the hands of a driver as skilled as John that is no Girlie Car. I took off after them and we soon got into some delightfully curvy roads. John believes in driving the speed limit, or as close to it as possible, no matter what the road is doing. This was the first time I had had the opportunity to really push my S2000 and I could not keep up with him. He stopped at one point to let some other cars join us. When we set off again I was much more confident about what my car

would and would not do and had a blast sticking with John and Roger. We drove highway 3 to 36 to 101 and then up to Eureka where we stopped for lunch at the Lost Coast Pub. Presently, the others in our drive showed up. No matter what

you think about the handling of your Mog, there is nothing like the modern suspension in cars like the Miata and S2000. I failed to mention that I was helping Button get a little movie camera mounted on his Bitsa and was showing him how it is operated. In the process we got a couple of odd photos. After lunch we headed back to Weaverville back up 101 and across on 299. This stretch was not as

technically challenging as the morning‟s part of the run, but was still a fun drive. We got back into Weaverville in the afternoon and most of us agreed to meet for dinner at 7:00 PM at the LaGrange Café. That was a good deal for me as it is just across the street from my hotel. John Grosseto had planned an „Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt‟ contest. There were only four contestants, but the nod went to Maggi Craig. It is envisioned that this will become a perpetual trophy, with a snip of the shirt tail of the winner being attached to the trophy each year. Yeah, this is a fun group! Button‟s back - Gordon Craig worked all day, but was not able to complete a fix. John Burks stayed with him for Moral Support. Gordon was to Flat Bed home. Rather Sad. I was hoping to visit a bit with Gordon.

The next morning, again no real movement to get going. John Burks said c'mon Button lets go. John is one of the original Flog Mogger's. He has several Morgans including a +8 with a Corvette engine. The Morgan he was using was one he built. Bill Fink had a +4 (I think it was a +4) alloy body in storage. John bought it, installed a S2000 engine, kept it very light. It could scoot. The road from Weaverville to Redding, is a very long down hill roller coaster with great banked curves. Following John in the morning with little traffic was a delight. John and I had lunch in Susanville. But I would lose him as I needed fuel and he did not see me stop. No problem I had a very enjoyable run to Oroville at a bit more relaxed pace. That night, lovely accommodations at the “Feather Falls Casino”. A banquet that night where John Grosseto presented two trophy's to me. One for driving the furthest and the other the Flog Mog Perpetual Trophy. Quite and honor. The next morning I left at 7:00AM and arrived home at 7:00PM. My +8 Bitsa was comfortable, fast, and reliable. What else can an Old Man ask for. Tom to wrap it up - Saturday morning I checked out of my hotel amidst a huge display of quilts hung along Main Street. I stopped long enough to take a photo of a Real Estate Office that is a hoot, before continuing to the Nugget Café for breakfast. I got to the Forty Niner to find the

usual assemblage of folks standing around wondering when we were going to get started and who had not yet made it to breakfast. Finally John Grosseto headed out and I followed, as did several others. I was, by now, very comfortable

with my car and had great fun hanging on John‟s bumper through some of the morning and afternoon twisty bits. I spoke to Jan Saturday evening and she told me that she kept looking over her shoulder and thinking, „He‟s still there!‟ We stopped in Susanville for lunch, but only John and Jan Grosseto, Marg Naughton, Grant and Angie Larson, and I ate together. We kept seeing Morgans going by outside the restaurant, one way or the other. After lunch we got back on the road headed toward Oroville, our overnight stop. Along the way we stopped where Ernesto and Marta Sirolli had had a minor problem. Several others had stopped as well. Their car got restarted and they opted for a different route to

Oroville. John and Jan took off again on the original route, with their faithful blue companion stuck in their rear view mirror. We got to the Feather Falls Casino Hotel around 4:00 PM and got checked in. The rooms are very nice, but take the phrase „heated‟, as applied to the pool, with a grain of salt. Still, it was very refreshing to go for a brief dip and swim a few laps to loosen up muscles that needed it. We gathered in the evening in one of the banquet rooms in the casino for a nice group dinner. I ran into Bill Button while trying to find the elevator up to the room and he and I had to find a guide who could take us through the crowd and din. Sorry, but I still don‟t understand how so many people who appear as if they don‟t have a pot to p… in or

a window to throw it out of can spend the evening gambling away what little they have. Face it folks, the house always wins. I was in no rush to rise Sunday morning. I had planned to stop at my sister‟s place on the way back as I had done on the way down. However, once I got on the road I decided that I had been away from home long enough and wanted to get back. I stopped for breakfast at a Starbucks in Chico and for fuel in Red Bluff, and again in Roseburg, OR. Some 650 miles later I arrived home about 7:45. FlogMog 15 was a fun event. The consensus

was that it had been a great success and folks had really enjoyed it. I certainly did. I made some new friends and renewed acquaintances with a few others. I got to know my car better than I ever had before, and I had five days of wonderful top down motoring. And I averaged 28.7 MPG for the entire trip. For somebody who loves to drive, it doesn‟t get much better than that.

Island Pod Noggin and Natter

Stonehouse Pub, January 16th, 2011

Pat and Roland Gilbert arranged reasonable

weather for our first N&N of the year at a very

good pub near the Swartz Bay ferry terminal – but

no-one was brave enough to take a Morgan (Ken

Butler and the Reddingtons were away and the Morgan that is rumoured to have arrived recently

on the Island did not appear either).

The pub was

supposed to

be closed un-til noon, but they allowed us in early as long as

we kept out of the floor washer‟s way and stuck

to coffee.

There was a good showing of 15 members in the

end, as a healthy-looking Jim Walters eventually made it over from Cobble Hill to join the convivial

group in one of the rooms. Perhaps we were a

little too convivial, as one other party who had

apparently expected a quiet Sunday meal decided to move to another part of the pub;

however we all enjoyed a good lunch - and the beer isn‟t bad either.

It was good to see that all present had sur-

vived the festive season in good form: the Gil-

berts, Lesley and Ken Douch, Garnet and Hal

Irwin, Tricia and Leo Lee, Anne and Bruce May-

cock, Kit Raetsen and Joanne Cockshutt, Anna Rochfort and Sam Harris (who are arranging

the February N&N at The Fuse in Sooke) and

Jim Walters.

MORGANS AT DEVIL'S PUNCHBOWL XVI This year‟s Devil‟s Punchbowl event is less than two months away, so it‟s not too soon to start

planning and making commitments. Please contact Heinz Stromquist as soon as possible and add

your name to the roster.

WHAT: A three-day MOGNW event at the Oregon coast.

WHEN: June 10 - 12, 2011. We will gather Thursday evening, June 9th for a BBQ at Bob and Claire

Hauge's home in Longview. In past years this has been the premier event for kicking off

the Punchbowl weekend, one you definitely do not want to miss.

On Friday, June 10th we will leave Longview at 8:00 am for a full day of motoring through

the backcountry to the Oregon coast. There will be curvy roads galore interrupted only by

lunch at a winery with one of the best views anywhere.

Saturday, June 11th will be an open day that can be used for exploring the area or for just

relaxing and visiting with friends and tinkering with Morgans. The day is rounded out with an

evening potluck overlooking the ocean. On Sunday we return home.

WHERE: The Alpine Chalets are located on the south bluff of Otter Rock, eight miles north of New-

port, six miles south of Depoe Bay. We have reserved all eleven chalets.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Thurs., June 9:

Rooms have been blocked out at the Red Lion Hotel, Kelso, Washington. Please make reser-

vations by specifying that you are with the Morgan Owners Group Northwest.

Phone: 360-578-4007. The room rate is $89.95 plus tax, for either a king or two doubles.

Friday & Saturday, June 10 and 11: Alpine Chalets, Otter Rock, OR.

Please contact Heinz, rather than the Chalets, to arrange reservations – all the rooms

blocked out. During past events, we managed to accommodate most everyone at the Chalets

by doubling up in units with two toilets. If demand should exceed the room supply, there are

other room options located just minutes from the Chalets.
