We have a lot to talk about this month as we gear up for our Young Eagles Rally 2016. Our May meetings will be held on different dates and at different locations. We are holding these two meetings to help get all volunteers through the mandatory Youth Protection Training and Background Checks. The first meeting is on Friday, May 13 th , 6:30pm at (1V6) Fremont County Airport, Annex Trailer #2. The second meeting is on Saturday May 14 th , 8:30am at Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum. You only have to attend one of the meetings. If you attend the Pueblo meeting we will complete the training and then go eat breakfast at the Aviator Bar and Grill. The date of our Young Eagles Rally 2016 is June 18 th . We will talk about show times at the May meeting and email the information as the event draws near. Expect a volunteer show time of 6:15am and a pilot show time of 6:30am with a pilot brief at 6:45am and our first prop spinning at 7:15am. If you have any friends that would like to be a pilot in our rally, have them contact me, Ron Davidson (719)647-2386 or [email protected] If you have friends that want to volunteer to help on the ground have them contact Susan Myhre (719)252-7823 or [email protected] We need all the help we can get, so please recruit everyone you know. They will need to complete the training even if they are not an EAA member, so bring them to the May meeting. The background check takes 7-10 business days to get processed, so our May meeting is really the last chance to complete it. If they are a non EAA member we can get them a 6 month trial membership giving them an EAA number so they can complete the Youth Protection Training online. Our goal is to have 20 aircraft fly 100 children between 7:00am-11:30am. This is a little bigger and faster than last year so we need all the help we can get! Blue Skies and Tailwinds, Ron Davidson

Minutes from March’s meeting

EAA 808 Meeting 4-9-16, Weisbrod Aircraft Museum

Meeting chaired by Pres. Ron Davidson

14 members in attendance

Meeting called to order by Pres. Davidson

Briefing given by Sue Myher on the plans for the upcoming Young Eagles event.

Target is going to be 100 kids again

She is trying to arrange for 20 pilots this time

All adult participants in the event need to take the EAA Child Protection Training. The minimum requirements are for the YE coordinator, EAA field reps., pilots and for “2-deep Leadership Supporters”. Sue feels that if all volunteers have taken the training then we will always meet the “2-Deep Leadership Supporters” requirement.

◦ Training is very easy and there are only a couple of questions associated with the background check

◦ Access training on the EAA.org website by going to EAA.org>Sign in>My Account>Child protection training. Please send Sue a note when you complete the training.

◦ Goal of training is to protect kids, protect the EAA & the chapter and to reassure parents

◦ Only immediate fails are if you have a felony background, are a registered sex offender, have been convicted of animal cruelty, conviction for posession of controlled substances in the last 5 years or if you fail to complete the form.

◦ Sue will handle informing parents about the policy

◦ EAA wants no contact with YE candidates outside of the event

Page 4: EAA Chapter 808 Newsletter May, 2016 - Amazon S3€¦ · EAA Chapter 808 Newsletter May, 2016 Vice President Program Words & Program Notes Program speaker scheduling is on hold until

◦ Volunteers are prohibited from any abuse or discipline of children, which includes any familiar contact or affectionate contact

All photos taken of the event must be made available to the parents

Any discipline required must take place through the parents. If there continue to be problems, they will be asked to leave.

Any known or suspected child abuse must be immediately reported by calling 911. Following that, a report must be filed in writing to EAA headquarters.

It was suggested that the chapter contact the Sheriff's office for the event and see if an officer will be available to attend.

Sue reported on her visit to a Young Eagles event at Front Range Airport: apparently they do a 2-hour ground school the night before for all YE candidates and it's handled like a Boy Scout Aviation merit badge. We have no plans to do anything similar.

The 18th of June was the target date for our Young Eagles event, but that is the same date as the Blitz Airshow. Ron is proposing use of the Flower East building which is on the East end of the airport. So far, airport management is balking due to security concerns. We may end up moving the date to another weekend.

Ron will check on the availability of the free EAA 6-month memberships for non-member YE pilots

We are also going to try (again) to see if we can get the press to attend. Tried last time, but no one showed up.

A motion was made, 2nded and approved to fund the YE event with a budget of $400

Meeting Schedule:

We are also going to try and make the swap meet an annual April event

Our May meeting will be at Fremont Co., and will be all Young Eagles planning. Please bring a laptop if you have

one so we can provide Child Protection Training at the meeting.

The July meeting may be a campout in Buena Vista, on the airport grounds

The August meeting will be planning for the Fremont Co. Fly-in (no airshow this year). The chapter will resume

doing pancakes again this year.

In September, we will resume our speaker schedule.

Jon is donating his pedal plane as an income source for the chapter. Possibly auction/raffle at the Fremont Co. fly-in.

We broke even on the burrito breakfast. With some upscaling, it may be a profitable event.

Mike is willing to do the laser cut keychains again as handouts for the YE event

There being no other business, a motion was made, 2nded and approved to adjourn.

In the Workshop

Hans Miesler and Ron Davidson kept Catto Props in business this month. Hans bought a three bladed prop for his Pitts and says that the lighter weight of the wood and composite prop makes a big difference in his aerobatic routine due to the decreasing in gyroscopic force during maneuvers. His old aluminum prop weighed over 30lbs while his new Catto prop weighs about 15lbs!

I bought a two bladed 86”x40” climb prop for my Avid Magnum. Now I need to buy some bigger tires so I’m not using my new prop as a taxiway sweeper! It is a beefy prop and should give some outstanding climb performance.
