Boeing ramps up participation at AirVenture

T he Boeing Company will par-ticipate in this year’s EAA Air-Venture Oshkosh fly-in with a

variety of activities, highlighted by sponsorship of the main showcase ramp at Oshkosh, which will now be known as Boeing Plaza. It marks the world’s largest aerospace company’s first extensive participation at EAA AirVenture. The area at EAA’s show center has hosted some of world’s most intriguing aircraft over the past two decades, rang-ing from SpaceShipOne and the British Airways Concorde to 747 airliners and massive military transports. This year Boeing has committed to bringing an EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft demonstration trailer to Oshkosh. Addi-tionally, new scholarships will be estab-lished for aspiring aviation professionals. “We welcome Boeing as an impor-tant supporter this year. Many people who eventually pilot and service Boeing aircraft worldwide begin in general avia-tion at places such as Oshkosh, and by flying, building, and restoring personal aircraft as EAA members,” said Jack J. Pel-ton, EAA’s chairman of the board. “Hav-ing Boeing support the spirit of flight at AirVenture solidifies EAA’s annual fly-in convention as aviation’s family reunion.” The Boeing EA-18G Growler demon-

stration trailer, including jet simulators, will be open to the public July 31 through August 3 during exhibit hours. The simu-lator allows pilots and non-pilots alike to experience flying a military electronic at-tack fighter jet. It will be located on the southwest corner of Boeing Plaza. “We know that dreams of flying take on many sizes and shapes, but no mat-ter what we fly, we share the same fas-cination for flight,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president of Boeing Flight Services. “That’s why Boeing is very pleased to be part of the activities at Oshkosh, the sin-gular place on earth where these dreams are all in one location. It is also why Boe-ing is establishing scholarships to pro-mote and support those who are pursu-ing these dreams.” Boeing subsidiary Jeppesen once again has a significant presence at the show. In addition to its customary role as an exhibitor, Jeppesen this year will be conducting five Chart Clinic Confiden-tial forums in the IFR Proficiency Tent, and also is supporting the Redbird Flight Simulations Flying Challenge Cup, where pilots test and rate their stick and rudder skills. Jeppesen is sponsoring one individual, who will be participating in the final challenge. Boeing Flight Services is sponsoring three flight training scholarships to EAA

members who have completed their FAA private pilot written exam and first solo flight. Recipients will be presented the flight training award at AirVenture 2014 by Boeing executives. Boeing subsidiary Aviall is sponsoring the Ambassador Program at EAA AirVen-ture. Through this program, Aviall helps ensure donors, officials, and other VIP guests are properly introduced to AirVen-ture each year. Aviall is a leading wholesale distributor of thousands of OEM aircraft parts and offers related services for general aviation aircraft. Aviall is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and has 40 customer service centers around the world. Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company and the leading manufacturer of

commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. Additionally, Boeing designs and manufactures rotorcraft, electronic and defense systems, missiles, satellites, launch vehicles, and advanced informa-tion and communication systems. As a major service provider to NASA, Boeing is the prime contractor for the International Space Station. The compa-ny also provides numerous military and commercial airline support services. Boeing has a long tradition of aero-space leadership and innovation and em-ploys more than 169,000 people across the United States and in more than 65 countries. This represents one of the most diverse, talented, and innovative work-forces anywhere.

Aviation community unites behind One Week WonderM ore than a dozen companies

are pitching in to support this week’s unique One Week

Wonder airplane building project at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014. The goal is to build a complete airplane during the seven-day annual conven-tion and fly-in. One Week Wonder allows EAA staff and experienced volunteers to show how people can build their own airplane while demonstrating the high technical standards in today’s home-built aircraft, aided by EAA builder support programs. AirVenture attendees will be able to add their own hands-on moment to the construction project by pulling a rivet and signing the logbook as one of the builders. The first 5,000 people participat-ing will also receive a commemorative project pin. And you can also help determine what the airplane will look like by cast-ing your vote for one of the three final paint scheme contenders, provided by Scheme Designers. Zenith Aircraft has donated a CH 750 kit that will take shape at the One Week Wonder display, located on EAA Square—the intersection of Celebra-tion Way and Knapp Street Road. The aircraft is an economical, all-metal light

aircraft available as a Cruzer (for cross-country operations) or STOL (short takeoff and landing). We’re building the Cruzer this week. BRP Rotax has contributed its new 912 iS engine to the project. The engine features the latest technology with a single-lever control, fuel injection, and extremely efficient fuel burn. In 2013, Rotax received EAA’s August Raspet Award for innovation such as for the 912 iS engine that advanced sport avia-tion technology. Skytek Aircraft Services Ltd., which designed the Rotax 912 iS firewall-forward installation for the CH 750, is providing a Rotax Engine Installa-tion Package (REIP) kit. In addition, Dynon Avionics has donated a com-plete glass cockpit, featuring the new SkyView with comm radio, intercom, transponder, ADS-B weather and traf-fic, and new control panels. “We are gratified by the support we’ve received from throughout the fly-ing community for the One Week Won-der project,” said Charlie Becker, EAA’s director of communities & homebuilt community manager, who administers the organization’s homebuilt programs. “The technology from companies such as Zenith, Rotax, and Dynon that will be part of the One Week Wonder are among the most advanced aircraft components.

This shows how the freedom to innovate brings new advancements to aviation—something that will be on full display at Oshkosh for current aviators as well as those who are just discovering the pos-sibilities. We welcome all to participate in the One Week Wonder project.” Aircraft Spruce & Specialty, one of the world’s leading aviation and pi-lot supply companies, is also backing EAA’s unique building project with extensive promotional support before and during the convention. Other companies providing support to One Week Wonder include Poly-Fiber, Sensenich, Sennheiser, Scheme Design-

ers, SteinAir, MATCO Mfg., Flightline Interiors, AeroLEDs, Cummins Spinners, and Ray Allen Company. The goal of One Week Wonder is to construct, inspect, and ground test the aircraft during the weeklong event. In the project area, other displays will include the completed Zenith CH 750 built by EAA employees over the past year. Also look for interactive displays highlighting the aircraft construc-tion process, the wide variety of air- craft available for builders, and infor-mation on getting started on an air-craft project.

First Valdez STOL demonstrations at OshkoshSpecially modified aircraft like

those flown at one of the world’s most unique aviation competi-

tions will be part of the Valdez STOL (short takeoff and landing) flying activi-ties at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014. Demonstrations featuring the un-matched capabilities of the airplanes that compete at May’s annual Valdez Fly-In & Air Show in Alaska will be held several days at Oshkosh. More than a dozen of these aircraft, including homebuilt and specially modified production airplanes, will be participating at AirVenture. Originally created by Alaskan bush pilots, this type of flying provides sup-

plies to the rugged and far-flung outposts throughout Alaska. The demanding ter-rain in that state requires that aircraft take off and land on rough runways often less than 500 feet long. Along with flying demonstrations during AirVenture’s daily afternoon air show July 28-30, the Valdez STOL aircraft will stage a “fun flying” dem-onstration from the grass ultralight runway on Friday evening, August 1. In addition, the aircraft will be on dis-play in special parking areas and on Boeing Plaza, with pilots and builders part of forums and evening programs throughout the week.

U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds crowd line

T he first-ever full show by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh takes place

August 1-3. These performances are part of the daily afternoon air show at Oshkosh on each of those days. The Thunderbirds will perform what they describe as a “practice show”—basically, a full dress rehearsal for the weekend—at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 1. This comes at the end of the regular afternoon air show. On Saturday, August 2, the Thunder-birds will again fly at 5 p.m. as the final performers in the afternoon air show, which once again features World War II-era aircraft and full pyrotechnics. The Thunderbirds will wrap up their inaugural Oshkosh performances at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, as the

closing act in the last air show of Air-Venture 2014. Attendees, volunteers, and pilots should be aware that the Thunderbirds performances require a larger aero-batic box, necessitating a slight move of the crowd line to the west during the afternoon air shows on those days. Only essential, authorized air show personnel are permitted inside the box during the Thunderbirds performance. The Thunderbirds crowd line will run the entire length of the flightline, in line with the existing speaker poles, about 120 feet west of the regular crowd burn line. This line will be clearly marked. For air show spectators Visitors will have access to this area until 1 p.m. on Friday and Satur-day and until 12 p.m. on Sunday. At

those times, visitors must move back to behind the Thunderbirds crowd line. AirVenture guests will not be al-lowed to leave chairs, blankets, coolers, or other items past the Thunderbirds crowd line at any time on those days. On Friday through Sunday, Wittman Road will be closed to all vehicular traffic, providing additional space for air show viewing. For pilots and crew of aircraft parked on the flightline After 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Sat-urday and noon on Sunday, pilots or crew of planes parked between the two crowd lines will be allowed in the area for a short time with a security escort to perform urgent, essential tasks. Ac-cess will end at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

For pilots and crew parked south of Ultralights The configuration of the Thunderbirds aerobatic box puts all aircraft parked south of the Ultralights area inside of the Thunderbirds aerobatic box. After 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and after 12 p.m. on Sunday, pilots or crew of planes parked in this area will be allowed in the area for a short time and with a security escort to perform urgent, essential tasks. Access will end at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Full access will be restored after the completion of the Thunderbirds performance on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Look for extensive signage on the grounds, further explaining the ar-eas and times covered by these neces-sary rules and guidelines.

Avidyne’s IFD540 GPS now FAA approved

A vidyne’s IFD540, a new “plug and play” replacement for the extremely popular Garmin GNS

530, received FAA approval for instal-lation in a very long list of more than 1,000 airplane models just before the start of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014. The IFD540 slides directly into the GNS 530 mounting tray to give aircraft owners the latest in WAAS-enhanced GPS navigation, terrain awareness and Jeppesen charts, plus approval for LPV and other instrument approaches with little installation expense. The IFD540 is the same overall physical size as the 530 it replaces, but has an advanced flat screen that is about 10 percent larger. Some func-tions such as map planning and “rub-ber banding” of a flight plan can be performed by touching the screen. Other functions are controlled through dedicated knobs and keys. The IFD540 GPS navigator meets all of the latest accuracy requirements for instrument approaches and also provides position input for ADS-B. Flight plan entry and changes are simplified by nominating the next waypoint, a feature Avidyne calls Geo-Fill. The IFD540 knows where you are and what the destination is, so when you enter a waypoint or airway it can suggest the next fix along the route.

You can select the fix from a very short list instead of entering all the letters in the waypoint identifier. The system does the same with its built-in comm radio. If you are on ground control, for example, it knows you almost certainly want tower next, so it offers up that frequency for one-button selection. It does the same when en route, where it anticipates the next controller’s frequency and offers it as a suggestion. The terrain awareness and alerting system that looks ahead along your track to compare your altitude to ter-rain and obstacles, and issue advanced warning through colored alerts on the screen and aural warnings, is standard. So is the capability to display geo-ref-erenced Jeppesen approach charts. Nav and terrain data, and Jepp chart updates, are all entered into the IFD540 through a USB port on the bezel with a standard portable memory device. The USB port also is approved to charge phones, tablets, and other devices in flight. The IFD540 will operate with the nav indicators, flat-glass displays and autopilots already installed without wiring changes. If the GNS 530 the IFD540 is replacing was not a WAAS-enabled unit, a different GPS antenna and antenna cable may be required. Though the IFD540 slides directly into the 530 mounting tray and all connec-

tors mate, to be approved for IFR navi-gation some paperwork changes will be required. Deliveries of the IFD540 are begin-ning immediately and Avidyne has a significant number of order deposits in hand. The IFD540 is priced at $16,995. If a WAAS-capable GPS antenna is re-quired, it’s an extra cost. Avidyne also expects to deliver its IFD440, designed as a plug and play

replacement for the Garmin GNS 430, later this year. The smaller IFD440 is priced at $14,995. Avidyne has designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability into its IFD-series boxes and plans to announce how those wireless communications ports can be used in the future. You can see and operate the IFD540 at Avidyne’s booth here at AirVenture, number 3130, in Hangar C.

EAA would like to thank our partners for their support in making your convention special

ARE YOU READY? CONT. FROM P1 Of course, AirVenture has its roots in building and restoring aircraft, and that legacy is being recognized this year with the One Week Wonder proj-ect. Volunteers will transform a stan-dard Zenith CH 750 Cruzer kit into a flyable aircraft in only seven days! The effort is designed to showcase for at-tendees exactly how an airplane goes together, from start to finish. In addition to watching the project take shape during the week, all Air-Venture attendees are invited to come to the project site and pull a rivet. The first 5,000 people who do so will receive a One Week Wonder com-memorative pin, a digital photo com-memorating their experience, and the opportunity to sign their name in “The World’s Largest Builders Log.” But while the One Week Wonder project highlights homebuilding’s fu-ture, what about its rich history? That’s covered, also. For example, 2014 marks the 50th year since the iconic Breezy first appeared at the EAA fly-in con-vention in Rockford, Illinois. The no-cockpit, high-wing, pusher-configuration experimental’s legacy will be recognized during AirVenture with

a special ceremony on Tuesday at the Brown Arch to dedicate a brick honor-ing Breezy designer Carl Unger and his airplane. On Wednesday, the Breezy will be the featured airplane in a Home-builts in Review program, from 10 to 11 a.m., in the Homebuilders Hangar. Of course, honoring and remember-ing the people who have made experi-mental aviation what it is always has been a major part of AirVenture. This year, many events will be dedicated to honoring none other than EAA Found-er Paul H. Poberezny, who sadly passed away shortly after last year’s conven-tion. For example, a brief ceremony will be held today at the EAA Memorial Wall with EAA Chaplain Pastor Ed Rid-dick. The event is slated for 6 p.m. and is open to all AirVenture attendees. Meanwhile, look for other tributes to Paul, including his prized P-64 and P-51 warbirds prominently displayed on Boeing Plaza and an incredible tribute area in the EAA Welcome Center telling Paul’s story in his own words. On display is Paul’s iconic Red One VW; his first air-craft, the Waco Primary Glider; and the iconic Mechanix Illustrated Baby Ace. All along the flightline Paul tribute banners will fly from the speaker poles.

Monday’s AirVenture theme honors Paul, including a missing man forma-tion flight to open the afternoon air show in his honor. That evening’s pro-gram at the Theater in the Woods will be a special night of storytelling and celebrating Paul’s life and legacy, and also will be the focus of Tuesday’s EAA Lifetime Member Dinner, including videos, commemorative printed pro-gram, and a special keepsake. AirVenture’s 2014 edition also marks the 10th anniversary of the FAA’s adoption of the landmark sport pilot and light-sport aircraft (LSA) regulations. The then-new regula-tions created new categories of pi-lot and aircraft certification, which helped open aviation opportunities to new pilots and created new markets for manufacturers. In cooperation with the Light Air-craft Manufacturers Association, commemorative activities during Air-Venture include an LSA display high-lighting the history and contributions of the sport pilot and light-sport air-craft regulations, and a Tuesday forum involving major industry participants who have contributed to developing and growing the LSA industry. Also

throughout the week, LSA demonstra-tion flights will be conducted from the ultralight airstrip. Also this week experience the first Valdez STOL (short takeoff and land-ing) demonstration flights—on Run-way 18/36 early in the week and later on the ultralight strip. Of course, these examples merely scratch the surface. AirVenture after dark offers several options like nightly musical entertainment on Boeing Plaza led off by Kenny Loggins on Monday, along with nightly movies at the Fly-In Theater—both presented by Ford Motor Company, which enters its 15th year as AirVenture’s exclusive automo-tive sponsor—and evening programs at Theater in the Woods. As if all those events won’t be enough, there’s always the four main exhibit hangars, featuring booths and vending space filled by name-brand aviation manufacturers and suppliers. Outside those hangars, other exhibi-tors will be showing their aircraft, their powerplants, their support equipment, and their commitment to experimental aviation throughout the week. It all truly is the World’s Greatest Avia-tion Celebration. Welcome! And enjoy!

Reforming the third-class FAA medical

I f you’ve ever wondered why the FAA still requires many general avi-ation pilots to obtain a third-class

medical certificate before flying for recreation or personal transportation, you’re not alone. Sport pilots, and those flying gliders or hot-air balloons, are ex-empt from requirements to obtain and carry an FAA medical certificate, but if you fly a powered aircraft that doesn’t meet the Part 103 ultralight or light-sport definitions, you still need that piece of paper. If U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita (R-Indiana) has his way, the third-class medical may soon be a distant memory for many pilots. Rep. Rokita will hold a forum at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014, beginning Monday morning at 10:00 a.m., to discuss his proposal to re-form the requirement. Rokita, who holds an FAA com-mercial pilot certificate and volun-teers with Angel Flight, introduced the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act of 2013, H.R. 3708, along with Rep. Sam Graves (R-Missouri), who chairs the Congressional General Aviation Caucus. The bill would allow pilots of aircraft with six or fewer seats weigh-ing 6,000 pounds or less, and who op-erate VFR only at or below 14,000 feet MSL, to use their state-issued driver’s license as proof of medical certifica-tion. It would expand to pilots of other personal airplanes the same medical certification standard—a driver’s li-cense—applying to sport pilots operat-ing a light-sport aircraft. “Our members and the general avia-tion community have long supported a change in the medical certification pro-cess,” EAA Chairman Jack J. Pelton said upon the bill’s introduction. “This pro-posal will maintain safety, reduce costs for pilots and the federal government, and allow people to pursue the unique freedom of flight in the same way they can pursue other powered recreational activities,” he added. Presently, H.R. 3708 has 123 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Repre-

sentatives. A companion bill in the U.S. Senate—S. 2103, by Sens. John Booz-man (R-Arkansas), Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), and Pat Roberts (R-Kansas)—enjoys 17 co-sponsors. “It is time to use the positive safety experience gained from a decade of sport-pilot activity—as well as such flying activities as gliders and balloon-ing—to establish medical certification reforms that will sustain and grow general aviation in this country,” EAA’s Pelton added upon introduction of the Senate bill. Tomorrow at AirVenture, Rep. Roki-ta will make his first visit to the air show and will convene a forum to talk about his proposal with attendees. He’ll be joined by EAA Chairman Jack Pelton. The Aeromedical Reform Legislation Forum will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Forum 7 building in the Honda Forums and Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Work-shops Plaza. All pilots with an interest in this legislation—in other words, all pilots—are urged to attend.

Award for Current Achievement, the Sword of Excellence, the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship, and the Life-time Achievement Award from the Air Force Association. Patty and Brian Udell will have a lively discussion on aerobatics. Have

your questions ready, as audience par-ticipation is encouraged. 8:15 p.m. - Capt. Brian Udell, su-personic survivor, tells a compelling story of survival, rescue, and personal success. A Top Gun, F-15E instructor pilot and decorated combat veteran,

he holds the record for surviving the “highest speed” ejection from a U.S. fighter aircraft at nearly 800 knots. Brian’s riveting story is about surviv-ing with a crushed body and crippling injuries for four grueling hours, 65 miles off the Atlantic Coast, at night

in 60°F water, 5-foot seas, and 15 mph winds. He applies the principles of faith, determination, and a sheer willingness-to-survive to life’s every-day challenges. His triumphant return to flying the Strike Eagle is an inspiring story about perseverance and character. Brian takes his message to aviation and non-aviation audiences. Brian is an airline captain, competi-tion aerobatic pilot, and founder of ASI Xtreme. 9 p.m. - Ralph Hood, one of avia-tion’s favorite humorists, serves up funny stuff with one of his hilarious programs, Ground Clutter. This southern pilot now travels coast to coast sharing his insights on sales, marketing, and service to both non-aviation and aviation groups, with specialty programs for flight schools and instructors. He is also a contributing writer whose work can be found in Airport Business, AOPA’s Flight Training, and Flight School Busi-ness. The sport pilot and light-sport aircraft standards have influenced numerous other aviation regulations and innovations over the past decade. “EAA worked for years to get the sport pilot/LSA rule approved by the FAA,” said Timm Bogenhagen, EAA’s ultralight and lightplane community manager. “After a decade it is still a work in progress, such as our continuing efforts to include training in low-mass, high-drag aircraft and opening possibilities for electric aircraft.” Still, the regulations have allowed more than 100 new ready-to-fly aircraft designs to enter the market, representing one of the greatest bursts of aircraft in-troductions over the past half-century. The sport pi-lot/LSA approach to aircraft certification is also being used as the model for FAR Part 23 reform. Bogenhagen added that more than 4,000 people have become new sport pilots and thousands more existing pilots have chosen to fly under the sport pilot regulations, which allow use of a valid driver’s license for medical certification in lieu of a third-class medi-cal certificate. “That has been one of the major successes of the rule,” he said. “This set the foundation for major re-forms in aviation medical certification for private pi-lots. Sport pilot has provided 10 years of operational data proving that flying without a third-class medical certificate does not jeopardize safety.” Here are the confirmed activities for SP/LSA:•A display highlighting the history and contribu-

tions of the sport pilot and light-sport aircraft regulations, including a wide variety of LSA that sport pilots are eligible to fly. Location: On the southeast corner of EAA Square adjacent to the EAA Merchandise and Insurance Tent.

“Although we’ve seen remarkable things from the first 10 years of sport pilot and light-sport aircraft, this celebration also points us toward the future of these categories as part of the total general aviation com-munity,” Bogenhagen stressed. “A decade of progress has given us more opportunities as we seek to grow participation in aviation.”

Convention centered on daily themesThis year’s convention and fly-in has numer-

ous features and activities organized around daily themes. Beginning with our opening day

salute to EAA Founder Paul Poberezny and ending with Family Day on Sunday, August 3, the 2014 Air-Venture daily themes reflect the diversity we all en-joy in aviation. Here are the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 theme days and related activities: Monday, July 28: Salute to Paul Poberezny Throughout the week visit the EAA Welcome Center’s outstanding tribute display to Paul Pober-ezny. Opening of the afternoon air show will feature a missing man formation flight in Paul’s honor. Mon-day evening’s Theater in the Woods program will be about memories of Paul, hosted by EAA Young Eagles Chairman Sean D. Tucker. On Sunday, July 27, a special memorial ceremony will be held at the EAA Memorial Wall for Paul. Tuesday, July 29: Space Day Enjoy the Theater in the Woods evening program hosted by astronauts Joe Engle and Charlie Precourt. Also recognized will be the 10th anniversary of the suc-cessful SpaceShipOne flights for the X Prize. Wednesday, July 30: Salute to Homebuilding EAA’s One Week Wonder project will build a Ze-nith CH 750 airplane during the week, located on EAA Square. Perseverance awards will be presented on Wednesday to recognize the work that each and every builder invests to complete a homebuilt project. Flying demonstrations of unique or historic homebuilt aircraft

will precede the afternoon air show that will include flights by Breezys, which celebrates its 50-year anniver-sary this year; the SubSonex Personal Jet JSX-2; and Lt. Col. Jerry Kerby’s RV-8. AirVenture will also celebrate the new homebuilder workshop pavilions. Thursday, July 31: Century of Air Power A focus on the history of military advancements will feature air show performances by the Great War Flying Museum’s World War I fighters, early jet warbirds, and the arrival of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Thursday’s evening program at Theater in the Woods will be on the Millionaires’ Unit of World War I. Friday, August 1: Salute to Veterans Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight II will depart Oshkosh at dawn with 100 Vietnam veterans bound for Wash-ington, D.C., returning to a hero’s welcome at the close of the air show. The Parade of Veterans at midday runs from Warbird Alley to the Plaza, with programming from Warbirds of America and the Disabled Ameri-can Veterans. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy takes the stage on Boeing Plaza sponsored by the DAV and WOA, and the evening program at Theater in the Woods features Thunderbirds pilots past and present. W hile at AirVenture this week, enter the Ultra-lights area at your own

risk; you’re likely to encounter fun in Oshkosh’s Fun Fly Zone!

The Ultralights area features participation, hands-on learning, f light demonstrations of unique f ly-ing machines, and much more. Visi-tors will be immersed in everything this fun-based aviation segment has to offer.

“This year is shaping up as one of the most action-packed, fun-filled conventions in many years,” says EAA’s Timm Bogenhagen, ul-tralight and lightplane community manager. “With the many improve-ments to the area made last year, it’s easier to get there and move around to see all the action taking place.”

Along with ultralights, the Fun Fly Zone is convention home to lightplanes, powered parachutes and trikes, hot-air balloons, home-built rotorcraft, and light-sport aircraft (LSA)—this is the 10th an-niversary of the sport pilot/light-sport aircraft regulations.

The Fun Fly Zone is also the only place you’ll be able to see regular f lights of the emerging category of electric-powered aircraft.

The Fun Fly Zone ultralight run-way is where you can get up close to the many daily aircraft operations,

including morning and evening ul-tralight f lying, homebuilt rotorcraft f lights, as well as several scheduled special f light activities like the Val-dez STOL demonstrations on Fri-day evening, August 1, and an early Saturday morning balloon launch. Balloons will also conduct tethered operations at other times during the week.

On Saturday morning, the Ul-tralights area will become a Fun Run Zone with the start and finish of AirVenture’s popular Runway 5K run.

Knowledge is also on display throughout the week as dozens of vendors display their wares in the special exhibitor’s area. Visitors can learn more about fun f lying at numerous hands-on workshops and forums in the presentations area.

The Fun Fly Zone also has spe-cial parking areas for all types of featured aircraft, along with un-der-the-wing camping. Ultralight chapters have a specially designat-ed area to meet and promote their unique activities.

The Ultralight Barn will con-tinue to serve as Fun Fly Zone headquarters where members can register to camp, shop for AirVen-ture ultralight merchandise, obtain technical information, and more services.

Learn homebuilding skills at new workshop pavilions

AirVenture building instruction sessions get a significant upgrade in 2014 as three new pavilions

were built in the Aircraft Spruce & Spe-cialty Workshops area. The new facili-ties replace the long-standing workshop pavilions that have served our event for more than a quarter-century.

The three spacious, new workshop pavilions each have the capability to be split into two separate working areas. That means six dierent workshops can be occurring at any time—one more than in previous years.

The buildings also have better light-ing, sound, and multimedia capabilities.

A new Builders Education Cen-ter was constructed just west of those workshop pavilions, replacing the old building just across from Aces Bistro.

Another noticeable change: the 35-year-old former Central Exhibit Building, mostly unused last year, was removed and replaced with green space.

Additional green space was also added around the Federal Pavilion building and in front of Aces Bistro.

The projects continue the eort to make the grounds more visitor-friendly and also establish the homebuilt, fo-rums, and workshops areas as unique destinations.

K enny Loggins has been on the international music scene for more than four decades, breaking

through in the 1970s with partner Jim Messina, then breaking out on his own in the 1980s and producing six certifi ed platinum and eight gold records in the process. In all those years Loggins never per-formed in front of an air show crowd, but that will change in a big way Mon-day as he appears here, presented by Ford Motor Company. Fans eager to hear Loggins’ lengthy roster of hits won’t be disappointed, he said in a telephone interview with EAA earlier this month. “From ‘Danny’s Song’ to ‘Footloose,’” he hinted. His spectacular run of movie soundtrack hits in the 1980s earned Loggins the moniker “King of the Mov-ie Soundtrack.” “I don’t mind that, that’s a good one” he said. “I got lucky.” First came “I’m Alright” from Cad-dyshack (1980), followed by the Foot-loose title song (1984), then in 1986—probably the most popular with EAA’s crowd—came “Danger Zone” from the blockbuster Top Gun. Loggins’ video of

the song, which featured exciting air-to-air footage from the fi lm, was so popular the U.S. Navy called it “the most e ec-tive recruiting poster ever produced.” Loggins’ personal aviation back-ground is limited to that of a passenger, but he has extensive experience in that regard. “I’ve logged more miles than most fl ight attendants,” he joked. Loggins credits his longevity to writing relevant songs that listeners can relate to in their own lives. “Through-out my career I’ve strived to write songs that matter to people,” he said. “People sort of adopted my songs to their rites of passage. I’ve had many people ap-proach me saying that my music was the soundtrack to their lives. That’s why I’m still around.” Loggins will open his AirVenture performance with his latest musical col-laboration, the Blue Sky Riders, featur-ing Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Gary Burr and his wife, Nash-ville singer-songwriter Georgia Middle-man. Loggins and his band will start the evening in what’s likely to be an unfor-gettable wall-to-wall hit parade. The opening day concert will start after the daily air show, approximately 6 p.m.

The 2014-15 edition of the Aircraft Electronic Association’s (AEA) Pilot’s Guide to Avionicswill be unveiled with free distribution at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 from July 28-Au-gust 3. The AEA will hand out thousands of free copies to pilots and aircraft owners during the air show at the association’s booth, number 2035/36 in Hangar B. This year marks the 12th annual issue of the Pilot’s Guide to Avionics, a consumer’s direc-tory loaded with educational articles, timely information, and data about the latest avion-ics technologies. The Pilot’s Guide to Avionicshelps pilots and aircraft owners make better buying decisions and locate nearly 1,300 AEA member companies in 43 countries, including government-certifi ed repair stations around the world. These businesses specialize in main-tenance, repair, and installation of avionics and electronic systems in general aviation aircraft. The guide also includes information on the manufacturers and distributors of these prod-

ucts, plus technical schools and universities, engineers and consultants for the industry. Paula Derks, AEA president, said her as-sociation is thrilled to debut this year’s Pilot’s Guide to Avionics at AirVenture. “Our sta looks forward to giving complimentary cop-ies to all the pilots and aircraft owners at the AEA booth in Oshkosh,” said Derks. She said services provided by the government certi-fi ed repair shops in the directory of the publi-cation are becoming increasingly important. “This publication will help aircraft owners determine the most e cient compliance plan,” said Derks. Thousands of copies of the guide are distributed each year to AEA members, fl y-ing clubs throughout the U.S., and at sever-al industry trade shows. There’s no charge for the guide. Ann Hamilton’s passion for people has driven her to volunteer for EAA AirVen-ture Oshkosh’s Operation Thirst for the past 16 years. That spirit is being recog-nized this year as she will receive the 2014 Dorothy Hilbert Award at 3 p.m. to-day at the Volunteer Park dedication. The honor recognizes a female who exhibits the same passion, dedication, and devotion for volunteerism as did the late Dorothy Hilbert. She fi rst became involved with EAA in 1972 when her husband, Bob, earned his private pilot certifi cate and started fl ying to Oshkosh for the annual conven-tion from their home in Bellville, Ohio. Hamilton’s friend, Betty Ristau, got her involved with Operation Thirst in 1998. Operation Thirst is a group of volunteers who travel around the con-vention grounds and hand out bever-ages to other hard-working volunteers as they prepare the grounds for the annual gathering. They also provide lunch service as well for volunteers during the convention.

After volunteering part time for EAA, her position gradually led to her being Operation Thirst chairperson. She said being named recipient of the award is wonderful, but will accept it on behalf of her team of volunteers. “EAA has been my life, my vaca-tion since 1972,” Hamilton said. Ham-ilton stressed that it has meant a lot to her to work for such a great organiza-tion like EAA, and she feels that vol-unteers are at “the root” of its success. “I am a very giving person,” Ham-ilton said. “I love giving to people, and EAA lets my unit do what it needs to do.” Her passion for people derives from the love she has for her family. She has fi ve children, 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren that she said all love to attend AirVenture. She is considered as loyal and appre-ciative of EAA, and her hard work and dedication is viewed as a symbol of pas-sion for people.

It’s Saturday morning before the open-ing weekend of EAA AirVenture Osh-kosh 2014. Most of the North 40 airplane camping area is still bare grass, but a handful of hardy souls have arrived early and are enjoying the great weather and watching the landings on Runway 27.

Ken Katz is from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He’s flown into Oshkosh from his home field of Northampton Air-port (7B2) in his club’s Piper Archer.

Ken and a friend flew the Chero-kee from Massachusetts, across New York via Bualo, then over Canada to northern Michigan.

“The weather was looking real iy at Oshkosh,” said Ken. “So we hatched an elaborate plan where we went IFR into Green Bay, and then when we broke out we cancelled IFR and came VFR into Oshkosh. We also had a bunch of contingency plans if that didn’t work out.”

Are there any special procedures for overflying Canada?

“You have to be on a flight plan,” he explained, “you have to have a tran-sponder code, and you have to be talk-ing to air trac control. It works fine. They speak English, and they don’t shoot missiles at you, so it’s really a very friendly place to fly over.”

Is flying through the New York City area dicult?

“There’s a procedure. It’s just like flying into Oshkosh. If you know the procedure and you follow it, you’re fine. If you don’t study ahead of time you can get into trouble.”

He first attended the fly-in as a young boy with his father. But he feels that he’s really only been attending since 2012. To “really be attending” the fly-in “you stay for the week, and you camp out.”

Ken’s home field is Northampton, Massachusetts (7B2).

Ken’s regular “day job” is not in avia-tion, but in his spare time he researches and writes about historic planes. He’s the author of two books, his latest is B-52G/H Stratofortress in Action.

Ken will be doing book signings here at AirVenture on Tuesday and Wednes-day in the EAA Wearhouse shop. He’s also conducting a forum on the air-craft titled, “B-52 the Mighty Bu” on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Honda Aircraft Forum Pavilion 7.

Big Ben and Little Ben: Father and son attending AirVenture to-gether. It’s Dad’s third time to the fly-in and Little Ben’s second.

Dad lives in Goldsboro, North Caro-lina, and flies a 1978 Beechcraft Baron 58 out of Wayne Executive Jetport (GWW).The Baron is Dad’s latest in a long line of planes. “I love it. Best plane I’ve ever owned.”

Big Ben lives in North Carolina, but Little Ben lives in Pennsylvania. So the

personal airplane makes it possible for the Bens to spend every other weekend together.

Little Ben, who is 10, enjoys all the flying, and plans to become a pilot one day. These days he enjoys the flight sims that he finds here at AirVenture. Especially the fighter planes.

For Big Ben, personal aviation has a plain, simple, and indispensable value.“The airplane is what allowed me to move to North Carolina for a better job. So that I can fly back and forth to get him. I haven’t missed a weekend in five years.”

e average personal aircra can come with at least three logbooks: one for the airframe, one for the engine(s) and one for the propeller(s). And that’s usually enough—more than enough, say some owners drowning in FAA paperwork—to cover what needs to be logged.

But if you y your aircra IFR, there is some additional information the FAA requires to be recorded and, even if many owners may not always be fully in com-pliance all the time, the requirements still exist. Examples can include required VOR accuracy checks plus a log entry when a GPS navigator’s database is updated.

e problem? ere’s no logbook de-signed specically for logging these checks

and updates to your avionics. Until now.Enter the latest edition of ASA’s new Stan-dard Avionics Log, which features new pages dedicated to logging and tracking GPS database updates. Other capabilities include logging avionics installation, VOR accuracy, transponder and ELT checks, AD (airworthiness directive) and SB (ser-vice bulletin) compliance, plus mainte-nance records.

ASA’s Standard Avionics Log and other maintenance and pilot logbooks are avail-able at your local pilot shop from the tradi-tional online and mail-order sources, and via ASA’s website: www.asa2y.com. Visit ASA at booths 2074-2078, in the BendixKing by Honeywell Exhibit Hangar B.

P eople oen ask me “what’s new at Osh-kosh.” e answer is hundreds, maybe even thousands of new aviation prod-

ucts and services. But this year a stand-out category is head-

sets. ere are a bunch of new models making their EAA AirVenture Oshkosh debut, and the number of what I would call the super pre-mium headsets is growing. And AirVenture is the perfect place for headset shopping because they are all here for you to try.

ere is nothing in aviation more personal, and the likes and dislikes more subjective, than headsets. at’s why there are so many models. A headset one pilot can wear for hours in per-fect comfort can drive another crazy aer only a few minutes.

Even the audio performance of headsets is an individual perception. No matter the acous-tic testing metrics, each of us will experience dierent sound quality and noise level. at is particularly true when it comes to the ad-vanced active noise reduction (ANR) headsets.

e good news is that every signicant headset maker is exhibiting here at AirVenture. You can stop by and try on literally dozens of models to see how they t, feel, and sound. Most headset makers have equipment in their display to simulate aviation audio inputs, and some even have ways to simulate the cockpit noise environment.

e major aviation supply retailers such as Aircra Spruce, Sporty’s, and others have the popular headsets all lined up next to each oth-er. You can try several dierent headsets in a few minutes and make comparisons while the experience with each is fresh.

What I nd interesting is the technology race in the super premium headset. ere are now three headsets I know of priced at about $1,100. How long can it be before the $1,500 headset appears?

Bose has been in the super premium cat-egory since it introduced an ANR headset many years ago. And Bose continues to be a top seller. Its current A20 headset sets a high standard for active noise reduction and audio quality, but as with any other headset, there are disagreements about comfort.

Lightspeed has been on a technology

march toward ever more comfortable and quiet headsets, and the new Zulu PFX making its rst AirVenture appearance is remarkably good. e new Zulu matches the Bose in price, and many of us who have tried it believe noth-ing is quieter or more comfortable than the Zulu PFX. But that’s a personal opinion.

e newcomer in the super premium headset ranks is the AKG AV100. Austria-based AKG is a leader in microphones and headsets for the entertainment and recording industry. It also makes very popular head-phones for personal entertainment listening. e company is part of the huge Harmon International Industries that makes high-end audio equipment for luxury autos and many other markets.

e AV100 employs AKG’s decades of experience in headset design to create a very comfortable t, at least for me. Its advanced ANR is pleasing to some, not as eective to others who have tried it. Put one on this week and see what you think.

Bluetooth connectivity is a key feature in many expensive headsets so you can wirelessly listen to your personal devices or phone. Near-ly all have the capability to lower the incoming entertainment volume when voices come over the intercom or airplane radios. is feature isn’t necessarily that popular with pilots, par-ticularly if you y IFR, because there is a lot of ATC communications to listen for. But passen-gers love the wireless Bluetooth link because all their electronic devices work perfectly in the airplane without a tangle of cords and connec-tors.

So when shopping for headsets, be sure to include your primary passengers. Especially the one beside you who probably has some veto power over your ying and airplane spending.

Stancie is the toughest headset critic I know, and I always make sure she ies a leg with a new headset before I write about it. If Stancie likes, I know many others will.Is a headset worth $1,100? Only you and your passengers can say for sure, and this week at Oshkosh is the place to try them all and make that important and increasingly large invest-ment decision.

I like to stay ahead of my aircraft.

So if I’m 40 miles out with weather

rolling in, I’m listening to what’s

happening in front of me. AWOS.

Pilot chatter. A quick check with

flight service. Sometimes, there’s a

lot to decipher. But I need to hear

it clearly. Because when I do, I feel

confident. Prepared. In the moment.

And that allows me to just

focus on what matters,

flying.
