Technical ConsiderationsThe following technical considerations should be taken intoaccount when specifying thermal and acoustic insulationproducts for HVAC-R, process and industrial pipe andductwork systems:

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY ( FACTOR)Thermal conductivity, stated in W/(m•K), is the property of amaterial's ability to conduct heat, measured across a 1m³block. For example, a material with a high thermal conductivitysuch as copper has a value of 386 compared to a low thermalconductivity material such as AF/Armaflex Class O at 0.033 at0 °C.

CONDENSATION CONTROLWhere pipework and services operate at below-ambienttemperature water vapour condenses on the surface. Ifinsulation becomes wet it loses thermal performance,leading to colder surface temperatures, condensationand corrosion issues.

Closed cell Armaflex products provide an integral watervapour diffusion barrier with a mu value of >10,000.

ENERGY SAVINGThe rate of heat flow from a pipe is largely governed bythe differential to the ambient temperature, and heatlosses can be considerable. The insulation ofmechanical services is one of the single most effectivemeasures for improving energy efficiency andprolonging the lifespan of equipment.

PIPE FREEZINGSince water services are often located outside or inunheated areas where ambient temperatures may dropbelow 0 °C, the water can freeze and expand, causingpipes to burst. For this reason water supply regulationsspecify pipe insulation to reduce the risk of pipefreezing.

SURFACE EMISSIVITYThe emissivity of a material is the relative ability of itssurface to emit energy by radiation compared to energyradiated by a black body at the same temperature.

The more reflective a material, the less energy itradiates. Non-metallic silver coverings such as Arma-Chek Silver for example can be used either outdoors toprevent heat gain on cold applications or to reduce heatlosses from warm applications. For condensationprevention, reflective finishes are generally notadvantageous as a duller black surface, such as AF/Armaflex Class O, will help control outer temperatures,bringing them closer to the dew point.

INDOOR AIR QUALITYAir pollutants such as man-made volatile organicchemicals, industrial fibres, acidic particles of dust, andspores of mould and bacteria can all contribute tobuilding related symptoms.

The specification of Armaflex dust and fibre freeinsulation systems with added Microban® anti-microbial protection helps minimise the impact onindoor air quality.

Building RequlationsA number of regulations govern the specification andapplication of building services insulation materials inthe UK.

BS 5422• BS 5422 is the main British Standard referred to when

specifying insulation materials for building services(Method for specifying thermal insulating materials forpipes, tanks, vessels, ductwork and equipment operatingwithin the temperature range -40 °C to +700 °C).

• The standard sets out the minimum insulation thicknessesfor specific temperatures and applications in order toachieve a good balance between energy saving andcomparative cost of insulation.

PART L (CONSERVATION OF FUEL ANDPOWER)• The energy efficiency requirements of the Building

Regulations are set out in Part L (Conservation of fuel andpower) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations.

• Technical guidance is contained in four Part L ApprovedDocuments and two building services compliance guides(non-domestic building services and domestic buildingservices compliance guides). These documents providemaximum permitted heat loss tables for given pipeworkapplications.

CE MARKING• CE marking became a mandatory requirement for thermal

insulation construction products governed by a Europeanharmonized standard (hEN) in July 2013.

• The harmonized standards determine the requiredcharacteristics and obligatory properties, including firebehaviour (Euroclasses), dimensions and tolerances,thermal conductivity, dimensional stability and durabilitycharacteristics. Once a product has been tested to meetthe required properties a designation code is printed onthe product label to display the specific technicalproperties required by the hEN.

EUROCLASS FIRE RATINGS• In addition to British Fire Classes, Euroclasses are now

also listed for Reaction to Fire Performance, ranging fromA1 to F with additional criteria showing smoke intensitylevels (s1 to s3) and burning droplets (d0 to d2).

Market SegmentsREFRIGERATION AND CHILLED WATER SERVICESRefrigeration and cold water services operating at lowtemperatures leads to the formation of condensation whichcan cause problems with corrosion, mould growth andsubsequently reduce the efficiency and service life ofequipment if un-insulated or a product without an integralwater vapour barrier is used. Closed cell Armaflex materialsprevent moisture ingress with a high water vapour diffusionresistance value of >10,000 (mu value).

HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIRCONDITIONINGInsulation is an essential part of ducted heating,ventilation and air-conditioning systems, with the largesurface areas causing significant heat losses/gains andproblems with condensation, mould growth and poorindoor air quality.

Armaflex products are dust, formaldehyde and fibrefree and come with in-built Microban anti-microbialprotection for additional safe guarding against mouldand bacteria.

HEATING AND PLUMBINGThe insulation of central heating pipework can reduce heatlosses by as much as 87% and make a significant contributionto improving boiler efficiencies. The insulation of cold waterpipes is also important to protect against pipes freezing in subzero temperatures.

Armacell has also developed pre-insulated UV resistant andhigh temperature insulation ideal for solar hot water systemsand for insulating ground source heat pump pipes to maximiseefficiency.

MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIESProcess industry equipment including pipework, ducts,vessels, valves and flanges should be insulated to help ensurethat steam, hot water, hot gasses or cold liquids and gases aredelivered at controlled levels.

Elastomeric thermal and acoustic insulation systems aresuitable for both high and low temperature processapplications and easy to fabricate Armaflex sheet or tubes (upto 114mm diameter) can be used to minimise heat loss/gain,improve process efficiences, control condensation and providemechanical impact and personnel protection.

OIL GASOne of the greatest challenges for insulation of marine,offshore and heavy industrial environments is the issue ofCorrosion Under Insulation which causes pipe and metalcladding systems to rust and decay, resulting in expensiveproduction stoppages and maintenance schedules.

Closed cell insulation and non-metallic covering systemsprovide an excellent alternative for thermal and acousticinsulation to protect against mechanical impact, chemicalsand salt water. Pre-fabricated fittings are also available to cutdown on-site installation times in hazardous and processcritical environments.

ArmaPlus Technical ServicesThe performance of technical insulation materials canonly be guaranteed when carried out by skilledinstallers and contractors. For this purpose Armacellaccredited training courses are available monthly at ourOldham training school. One to three day courses areheld depending on the level of knowledge required. Forexample more complex applications such as largediameter pipework and pattern developments forfittings and covering systems are covered as part of thethree day training course. Dates of upcoming trainingdays and the applications covered are listed on theArmaPlus section of our website. INSULATION THICKNESS CALCULATIONSThe relaunched ArmWin thermal insulation calculationprogram is now available to download from our website andas an app to determine the correct insulation thicknessrequired for condensation control, minimising heat loss / heatgain and maintaining process temperatures to meet buildingregulations and the relevant industry standards.

BIM OBJECTSArmacell in the UK has become the first flexible insulationmanufacturer to make BIM objects available for ourelastomeric product ranges. These data-rich objects allowArmaflex products to be easily incorporated into 3D buildingmodels going forwards and are free to download from the NBS

Environmental productdeclarations (EPDs) forArmaflex productsArmacell publishes environmental product declarationswhich are based on an independent lifecycle assessment(LCA). Comparing the primary energy input identified in theLCA with the energy saving achieved shows that Armaflexinsulation materials save 140 times more energy than isneeded for their manufacture, transport and disposal.

Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are becomingmore and more important in the construction industry: theyprovide a transparent, independent and reproducible analysisof the environmental impacts of construction products andgive detailed information with sound data and figures. As a'sustainability passport' EPDs form the basis for designinggreen buildings in accordance with certification schemes suchas LEED, BREEAM or DGNB.

A NEW SAFETY STANDARD FOR FLEXIBLEINSULATION MATERIALSWith the fire classification BL-s1, d0, Armaflex Ultima sets anew safety standard in technical insulation. Economic SolutionAluminum remains one of the most cost-effectivematerials you can use, with outstanding properties thatenable considerable savings – it is three times cheaperthan copper - and offers significant technologicalimprovements. Aluminum represents an economicalternative to copper and is not subject to the same pricefluctuations.

Light weightAluminium is installed like copper, with minordifferences. The tools are the same and connectionmethods and precautions are already known to theindustry. Above all, aluminium is easy to form andtherefore reduces the cost of installation. For theequivalent burst pressure, aluminium tubes are onaverage 65% lighter than copper.

High corrosion resistanceCompared to steel and copper, aluminium has very lowcorrosion rates. This is due to the protecting oxide layerthat forms immediately on the aluminium surface whenexposed to the environment. This is a generalcharacteristic that applies to aluminium as “standalone.”

Condensation controlWith the original Tubolit closed cell insulation, TubolitSplit & DuoSplit Alu is the perfect solution to connectindoor and outdoor units of split and multi-split airconditioning systems. With proven quality Tubolit Split& DuoSplit protects against moisture and reducesenergy losses. In addition it has very good structure-born noise properties.

PREVENTING THERMAL BRIDGES

AF/Armafix thermally isolates the pipe and bracket and usedas part of a system with AF/Armaflex Class O tubes or sheetprovides long-term reliability for cold applications.

Armafix AF pipe supports are load bearing PET segmentsembedded in AF/Armaflex insulation, with two outer shellsmade of aluminium sheeting. With its closed cell structureacting as a built-in water vapour barrier and self-adhesivetape to secure the seams on both sides, thermal bridging andcondensation are prevented to ensure energy is not lost atfixings points. Armafix has a quick and easy three stepinstallation process to achieve a professional result whilst alsosaving time and money.

ARMAFIX AFPipe brackets represent a potential weak point ininsulation systems. If the pipe isn't thermally isolatedfrom the pipe bracket, thermal bridges occur andcondensation can form. This leads to increased energylosses and the risk of corrosion and secondary damage.To prevent thermal bridges, direct contact between thepipe and its bracket should therefore be avoided.Armafix AF pipe supports, in combination with AF/Armaflex Class O are the key for a perfectly enclosedinsulation system on refrigeration installations.

COMBI-PACKThe Armafix AF pipe supports are also available in convenientcombination packs, including pipe supports with matchingclamps.

DUCT SUPPORTArmafix AF duct supports are also available to thermally de-couple duct work from hanging brackets. The supports are 2metres long, providing a tailored solution for duct sizes.
