ron powers: no one cares about crazy peopleSEptEmBEr 19, 2017 Despite his family’s experience with schizo-phrenia, Ron Powers was stunned by the “criminalization” of mental illness he observed after going public with his book, No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America. In his blog (http://www.noonecaresaboutcrazypeople.com/blog/) he reports on the mentally ill and learning-disabled teenager who lost all reasoning power during months in jail, much of it in solitary confinement.

Powers’ book traces the heartbreaking story about his two sons with schizo- phrenia. His younger son had his first break in 2002 while at the Berklee College of Music. He committed suicide a week before his 21st birthday. His older son is now in recovery and living with his parents. Powers reports he has not missed a medication appointment in four years.

“I didn’t come here tonight to plug my book,” the author said, “but to tell you about my family’s experience with this incurable, genetically delivered brain

disease and how uninformed and unconcerned our country is about it.

“I’ve been stunned by the education I received after my book was published last March. I didn’t know how bad things were. Not down at Ground Zero. Not in the daily life inside our sub-nation, where abominations pile up and travesties of justice go uncorrected and mothers of insane children plead for help and even mercy that fall on the deaf ears of bureaucrats and doctors and law enforcement.

“I challenge you as individuals and as members of NAMI to join me. Write letters—to

your governor, legislators, judges, and sheriffs.”
