Modernism is a movement that encapsulated the cultural thinking during the late 19th and early 20th century, often noted as a movement or way of thinking. This movement was a widespread social and cultural wedge, spanning the Arts generally. Ezra Pound defined the early movement as “make it new”, in 1934.

Architecture during this period expressed the changing society and industrialized environment rapidly evolving when it was possible to make and create almost anything. Modernism is more generally understood as the era of the ‘machine age’ where cities were being designed to reflect social and cultural change, often based on new concepts of living and interacting.

A design school for the teaching and development of the modernism was created in 1919, known as The Bauhaus, and literally translates to “house of construction”. Initially under the guidance of the Architect Walter Gropius the school taught all forms of art and creative thinking interlaced with our changing social and cultural world.

The school based in the famous Dessau building was later run following the First World War, by Mies van der Rohe and teaching a full course of practical and creative thinking. The key achievement of Gropius and later van der Rohe was unifying the Arts: art, craft and technology which formed the incubator for the younger and inspirational Le Corbusier.

Corbusier refined many of the earlier aspects of the Bauhaus movement into his five points of architecture and strived to utilize the industrialization and advantages of the ‘machine age’ to modulate and free construction from traditional technical incumbents. Many of the projects of Le Corbusier have simple architectural forms, forming a lightweight and ‘floating’ appearance whereby the occupier cleanses from the surrounding city. Based on a dark base, lighter upper levels and use of solid and void tectonic interplay to create inspirational and innovative new buildings.

Stratford-upon-Avon a historic market town and the home of William Shakespeare, with more than 800 years of history.

The town formed on the ford of the River Avon, has a rich cultural setting and now provides a distinct community with a wide variety of leisure, entertaining and social activities. Independent shops and boutiques thrive in the cobbled and narrow medieval streets, the more modern shopping complex on the Birmingham road provides high street retail giants.

The river Avon runs along the centre of the town forming the heart to the social and physical setting, with restaurants and eateries along the steeped banks. Far reaching parklands and activity space straddles the Avon for much of the town.

There are a number of local sports clubs and activities for the sport minded, the town’s Leisure centre recently refurbished, along with two notable golf clubs; The Welcombe and Stratford upon Avon Golf Clubs.

Hinged between the Welcombe Hills and the historic medieval town centre, on the southern side of St Mary’s Road, the development of four bespoke and handcrafted contemporary homes provides luxurious accommodation in a great location.

The Villas, inspired by classic modernism, innovatively interprets the Arts and Crafts language through modern design. Set in well-landscaped plots, sophisticated views are glimpsed framing the delicately detailed sculptural forms.

A sense of arrival is expressed with the new homes being distinctly visible positioned on the higher level along St Mary’s Road. Spectacular views of the historic town centre and Welcombe Hills are enjoyed from the new homes.

Petersen Tegl have been making bricks since 1791 and the company has been run by generations of the same family since it was founded. The company has an eclectic portfolio which includes the famous Tivoli in Copenhagen, often frequented by Hans Christian Andersen.

The clay - still sourced from the surrounding area as has been the case for centuries - is moulded, dried and fired in Petersen’s traditional kilns which adds vibrant light and dark shades ensuring a non-uniform and, therefore, aesthetically stimulating appearance
