INTRODUCING…
SHESHAN’S NEW DIRECTOR OF GOLF
GAVIN ECKFORD
Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, I started playing golf about 20 years ago. After playing golf competitively throughout my school years, I was accepted into the Professional Golf Management Program in a neighbouring city. Upon graduating in 2001, I moved to Whistler, Canada, a well-‐known ski and golf destination, and home to much of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
I spent over 10 years as a Professional at Nicklaus North Golf Course in Whistler assuming many roles including, most recently, Golf Operations Manager and Director of Instruction. Nicklaus North has played host to two Skins Games and a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf featuring players such as Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, John Daly, and Jack Nicklaus.
During the years of 2009 -‐ 2010, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to move to London, England where I spent my time teaching golf and managing the golf operations at two golf courses. This was a wonderful chance to learn more about the golf industry closer to its original roots in the United Kingdom while experiencing the diverse European culture.
After my time in London, I returned to Whistler to become the Director of Instruction at Nicklaus North Golf Course. During my time as a Professional, I have taught thousands of lessons to people of all ages and abilities. I have been awarded the Associate Professional of the Year from the PGA of British Columbia and was recently voted Whistler's Favourite Sports Coach. I have also been the Camp Director for the only PGA Tour Junior Development Camp outside of the United States.
With many years of experience in the golf industry, both managing and teaching, I still enjoy playing competitive golf. My other interests include skiing during the winter months and travelling the world. I have spent time in Asia over the years although the closest I have been to Shanghai is Hong Kong. I am very excited to learn more about the culture in Sheshan, Shanghai, as well as China. I look forward to sharing my passion and enthusiasm with all of the members and ensuring the continued success of Sheshan International Golf Club. I am very eager to be a part of Sheshan International Golf Club as its prestige and reputation are second to none. I truly look forward to being associated with such a highly distinguished club and I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of the growth of golf in China.
Water Hazards
Golf: A game of 34 rules but many variables
If your ball is in a water hazard, you basically have two options:
• Without penalty, play the ball as it lies.
• With a 1-‐stroke penalty, take a drop outside the water hazard (following the below procedure).

GOLF RULE OF THE MONTH
To be continued… 6
Regular Water Hazard -‐ yellow stakes
1. Take a drop on the backwards extension of the line from the hole to the entry point (point X where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard), 1 penalty stroke.
2. Take a drop on the site of the last stroke (tee up on the teeing ground), 1 penalty stroke.

v Bear the Local Rules in mind – it is possible that a dropping zone has been provided as an additional option.

Lateral Water Hazard -‐ red stakes
The same options (1 + 2) as with the regular water hazard plus -‐
3. Take a drop within 2 club-‐lengths of the entry point (X), 1 penalty stroke
4. Take a drop within 2 club-‐lengths of the point opposite the entry point (point on the opposite side of the lateral water hazard at the same distance from the hole), 1 stroke penalty.

Behold! Sheshan Junior Program:

GOLF NEWS

The Sheshan Golf Learning Center was proud to launch the beginning of a new era of junior golf at Sheshan Golf Club this past month as Sheshan Head Professional Cyrus Janssen and Teaching Professional Robbie Sherwin began the new Sheshan TPI Junior Program. With the support of Titleist and PING Golf, the new Sheshan TPI Junior Program is a structured development program that consists of six color-‐coded levels. Upon entering the program juniors will receive a book outlining exactly what they need to accomplish in each level before advancing. Students will be graded in a combination of both athletic based skills and golf specific skills. The Sheshan TPI Junior Program is the first athletic based junior golf training program in Shanghai and we are very proud to offer this exclusive experience to the members of Sheshan. Cyrus and Robbie will be leading the program and also teaming with a certified fitness trainer to offer our children the absolute best junior golf experience. The mission of our program is to develop athletes first, golfers second, and create a love for the game that lasts a lifetime. 我们这次课程的主要目标是“发展运动员为一,球手为二”,和培养对高尔夫的热爱,让他们能够一生享受这运动的好处 .
