Welcome Sister Mary Veronica! In July, Sister Mary Veronica Keller, O.P., joined JP as the second principal to serve at our school. It is a blessing to have her at the helm of the Great Catholic High School! Learn more about Sister Mary Veronica here, and here!

Thank you Bishop Loverde! After more than 50 years of priestly ministry, including 16 years as shepherd of the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Loverde retired on November 23, 2016. Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School owes everything to Bishop Loverde. It was under his leadership that our school came to be. He envisioned, built, and blessed our school. He came and celebrated Mass for us each year, often bringing with him the pectoral crosses given to him by St. Pope John Paul II, and always leaving the students with a special gift – a day off of school, now known as the Bishop’s Holiday! Each year he told us that he loved all the high schools, but that John Paul the Great held a uniquely special place in his heart. Bishop Loverde, the feeling is mutual! Thank you for your many years of priestly service, and especially for leaving us with the gift of our school. You will always hold a special place in our history and in our hearts! You will be in our prayers!

Welcome Bishop Burbidge! On December 6, 2016, Bishop Michael Burbidge was installed as the fourth Bishop to serve the Diocese of Arlington. Saint John Paul the Great sent a small delegation to the installation held at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington, including principal Sister Mary Veronica Keller, Sister Malia Grace Reed, Fr. Bjorn Lundberg, Aidan Gelbach (2017), Myles Sherman (2017), Ryan Johnson (2018). Following the installation Mass, JP presented our new Bishop with a spiritual bouquet –a book filled with prayers from JP students, faculty, and staff. We look forward to welcoming Bishop Burbidge to John Paul as soon as his schedule will allow. Learn more about Bishop Burbidge here!

106.3FM WJPN – Voice of the JP Nation Despite our tower being taken out by lightening early in the school year, 106.3FM is broadcasting! We are currently airing programs from EWTN, but during breaks we have various students, faculty, and staff contributing to the station. The new Intro to Radio Programming and Operations class has been hard at work producing commercials for John Paul the Great, the Open House, and even Christmas greetings! Tune in to 106.3FM when you are near campus and you might hear someone you know! The Intro to Radio Programming and Operations class also took two field trips this semester to tour radio stations and learn from broadcasting professionals first-hand. Students traveled to the heart of D.C. and spent the day at EWTN with Fr. Lundberg

and EWTN staff. Students participated in a mock radio show and learned more about the equipment and operations of a professional studio. In addition to their visit to EWTN, students also traveled to the campus of George Mason University to check out the student-run radio station, WGMU, where they recorded some short clips and learned how to improve their editing skills. Thanks to faculty advisor, Mr. Roger Smith, for the tour, recording tips, and lunch!

Student Awards and Recognitions National Merit Achievements Congratulations to National Merit Commended Scholar: Rose Hartzell (2017); National Merit Semi-Finalist: Maria Horner (2017); and, National Hispanic Scholar: Claire Kotwicki (2017)! Isaac Heath (2019) was nominated and granted membership to the National Society of High School Scholars for meritorious scholastic achievement and the pursuit of excellence in 2016. Congratulations, Isaac! Y.E.S. Award

Congratulations to Mary Grace Coltharp (2017) for being selected as the 2016 winner of the Y.E.S. Award, sponsored by the Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia. The Youth Exemplifying Service (Y.E.S.) Award is an educational scholarship program honoring high school seniors from each of the four diocesan Catholic schools for their commitment to service. Mary Grace has said YES to Christ and to serving others in so many ways! See her on video here!

Freshmen Visit JPII In what is hoped to be a new JP tradition, all freshmen took a trip at the beginning of the school year to the beautiful Saint John Paul II National Shrine, in Washington, D.C. Organized through our religion classes, this introduction to the life of our patron saint

proved an unforgettable experience. Here's what our freshmen had to say about it: "The Saint John Paul II shrine was one of the best places I've ever been to. The most beautiful thing about John Paul is his encounter with Mary when he was shot." ~ Jonathan Colmenares "I really saw how nice his smile was." ~ Grace Elizabeth White

"My favorite part about the whole trip was tied between two things, the Luminous Mysteries Chapel and the videos on the lower level when you started to walk through the shrine. The coolest thing about the Luminous Mysteries Chapel was that there was a staff on the altar, and in the middle of the staff, there was the blood of St. John Paul the Great which was really cool because it was his actual blood, so it was almost like he was there when we were praying the Rosary." ~ Phillip Bongiorno "I loved the mosaic artwork in the chapel. It was truly beautiful, and even more beautiful that I got to pray in front of a relic of St. John Paul the Great's blood." ~ Abigail Harrigan

Options on Ice On the Feast of St. Nicholas, the students and teachers in the JP Options program took a field trip to the Prince William Ice Center to enjoy an hour of sled hockey with the Potomac Patriots Juniors Ice Hockey Team. Prior to the field trip, Options students learned about sled hockey through videos in class, and an equipment demo. Once at the rink, and decked out in gear, everyone took to the ice for their first ice hockey experience. Thanks to the Potomac Patriots team for being great mentors and providing a great day of fun!

Daughters of the King In what has now become an anticipated JP tradition, Sister Ann Dominic and Sister Malia Grace led a group of JP girls to Nashville for a fun-filled, prayer-filled, weekend retreat in Nashville, TN. John Paul teachers received a ‘thank you’ from the retreat group, noting highlights of the trip. Read a bit about their trip and see more photos here!

Happy 800th Birthday! This year Dominicans world-wide have been celebrating their 800th jubilee. On

Wednesday, November 16, John Paul has a special guest celebrant at our all-school Mass: Fr. Benedict Croell, O.P. Fr. Benedict is the vocation director for the Dominican friars, and a Missionary of Mercy commissioned by Pope Francis. He preached during our school Mass about the Year of Mercy and this special moment in Dominican history. Thanks for coming to JP, Fr.

Benedict, and thank you to all the Dominican’s who bless us daily at JP!

Y.O.M. Ends, But Mercy Endures ‘Mercy Endures’ became a theme at John Paul when Pope Francis announced that he would declare an extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy, to be celebrated from December 8, 2015, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, to November 20, 2016, the feast of Christ the King. The John Paul community entered into the Year of Mercy in many ways, culminating in special screenings of the acclaimed documentary The Original Image of Divine Mercy: The Untold Story of an Unknown Masterpiece. The film was shown in each Religion class, after school for faculty and staff, and at an evening screening open to the public. View the documentary trailer here!

Sports Update View photos from our first official football game under

the lights – August 26, 2016 (FB)! Our boy’s varsity soccer team made it to the VISAA state playoffs this year! The first round of the VISAA playoffs was a difficult challenge against the #6 seed. A decisive win in penalty kicks resulted in a win sending John Paul to the quarter final

match. The quarter finals were against the third ranked team. After two overtime periods with no goals, the opponents narrowly escaped with a victory in penalty kicks. Making it to the quarter finals of the state playoffs is a great accomplishment for our varsity boy’s soccer team. Senior goalie, John Turner was selected to the VISAA All-State team. We expect to see more of the same in coming years! Congratulations to all the coaches and players of the 2016 Fall Season! We won some, lost some, and overall had a great time on the field! Special kudos to the following student-athletes who received awards at the Fall Sports award night: FOOTBALL: Nate Stefonsky: Most Valuable Player; Robert Domingue: Coach’s Award; Patrick Barkett: Wolf Award / CHEERLEADING: Emily Clement: Most Valuable Player; Mikayla Patrick: Coach’s Award; Tasha Estrate: Wolf Award / FIELD HOCKEY: Aidan Gelbach: Coach’s Award; Cecilia Starrs: Rock Solid Defense Award; Kelly Talish: Rock Solid Defense Award / CROSS COUNTRY: (Boys): James Storen: Mr. Cross Country; Thomas Small: Wolf Award; Nick Buckner: Coach’s Award. Varsity Lacrosse Player Commits to Belmont Abbey College. Joined by his classmates and friends, Andrew Tillotson (2017) recently signed his National Letter of Intent to attend and play lacrosse at DII Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. Belmont Abbey is a preseason top ten ranked DII program and the college was recently ranked in the top ten regional colleges in the South by US News and World Report. Andrew has been a midfielder on the Varsity team all four of his seasons at JP. Congratulations, Andrew!

Thanking and Honoring the Greatest Generation Thanks to the on-going efforts the McCaskey Family (Megan (2016) and James (2018), John Paul the Great students have had opportunities to serve and thank U.S. veterans and war heroes. Veronica Riordan (2017) was part of a ceremony at the WWII

Memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring more than 60 men and women of the greatest generation. She sang beautifully, and also spent time greeting the veterans who flew with Puget Sound Honor Flight. Also there to welcome

the veterans were James McCaskey and alumna Megan McCaskey. And, for the third year in a row, hundreds of John Paul students took time during their lunch break to sign Christmas cards to veterans living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Four John Paul students then accompanied the St. Andrew’s Trail Life Troop to the retirement home to deliver the cards and donated chocolate bars, and spend time chatting with the residents. The veterans were very appreciative and happy to see everyone. Some students were asked why they took the time to write a card during lunch, and here are their responses:

Teddy Durant (2019): "My dad is a veteran, so I understand the sacrifices they make and how hard it is to readjust to civilian life. This is just a little way to give back. I sent a brief message of appreciation, wished them a Merry Christmas, and promised to pray for them."

Alex Turner (2017): "I wanted to share the joy and spirit of Christmas with someone who has served our country. It's only fair. They've done so much for us. It's the least I can do."

Sam Davis (2017): "I thanked them for their service to our country and expressed directly that they are a hero. They should know that."

Camryn Stryker (2018): "It draws us back to the real meaning of Christmas. I think it might mean more to someone to receive real, heart-felt word of thanks rather than a store bought gift. It's a very small way to give back and show appreciation."

Melanie Sherrill (2018): "To give back to a veteran, and everyone who serves, because they have had an impact in our lives, whether people realize it or not. They deserve our gratitude."

House Update The Houses kicked off the school year on September 1 with a nail biting game of House soccer in the gym, with Dominic taking the victory. At the end of September all the Houses decorated their lockers based on the heritage of their Saint for Spirit Week, everyone was rushing around the clock to try put up their elaborate decoration in time for judging. Walking through the hallways was like traveling from Mexico to England to the Philippines. During October all the students from all Houses went out to support our Cross Country runners and performers at the St. Cecilia concert to earn some Marquee event points. In November students, faculty, and staff rallied together to put on an amazing Open House, prospective Wolves ended in the

gymnasium for a round of House races. Future students raced down the court while everyone cheered them on! On December 1 all the Houses gathered in the gym for a big game of Volleyball. Everyone was super involved and it was a tough game, but Ruiz took the gold. With Christmas on the way we are challenging each other to participate in our service project for Catholic Charities. The goal of the project was to get everyone in the community involved, learn about Catholic Charities, and to raise some money for those in

need. Slated for after Christmas break: the annual JP Talent Show, a Snowball Dance, and other House events so that we can continue to make John Paul the Great a place where everyone can belong, grow and thrive. In a new first, House of the Month for September, October, and November all belong to the House of Dominic! Seven Houses are looking to unseat them in December. Stay tuned!

John Paul students deliver Christmas messages from JP Students to veterans at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (L-R) Shelby Tashjian (2020), McKenzie Gallagher (2019), James McCaskey (2018) Dakota Briceno (2017).

Summer Throwback – WYD Poland

In the cold days of December, summer can seem like a dream, but for the 16 JP students and 12 adults who traveled to Poland in July for the celebration of World Youth Day in Krakow, the warm memories are alive and well. The JP pilgrims were preparing

for nearly 20 months to make this trip possible, and experienced the time of their lives! The pilgrimage began in Rome, spending two days in the Eternal City where walking through the Holy Doors at St. Peter's Basilica during the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, and Mass at the tomb of Saint John Paul the Great were highlights. Next, they were on to Assisi, the city of St. Francis, as well as day trips in Venice and Vienna, Austria. Finally, they made it to Poland for a week of prayer,

praise, and growth in faith, while awaiting the arrival of our Holy Father Pope Francis. Some of the highlights in Poland included a somber visit to the concentration camp of Auschwitz, visits to the Shrines of Divine Mercy and St. John Paul II in Krakow, daily catechesis sessions hosted by the Knights of Columbus, veneration of the relics of St. Therese of Lisieux and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, and two opportunities to see the Holy Father - at his formal welcoming to Krakow, and during the all-night prayer vigil and closing Mass on the final day of the pilgrimage. After two packed weeks, our pilgrims headed back to the United States, filled the graces of our Father's mercy!
