OREGON DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES-AGING & PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Dear Colleagues and Stakeholders, The Aging & People with Disabilities program has a new website search tool to help consumers research long-term care provider licensing and compliance information is now available. This search tool replaces a previous website that was more complex to use and limited in terms of information available. The new website makes it possible for consumers to search for care providers by location, type of setting (such as nursing facility, assisted living/residential care or adult foster home) and whether the facility accepts Medicaid or Medicare, and provides information about each facility’s licensing compliance history, including substantiated complaints and incidents of abuse, survey/inspection reports and the penalty amount assessed for violations. This initial version of this website tool is a first step. The Dept of Human Services’ commitment to developing, expanding upon and maintaining this online tool is a multi-phase project. We still face challenges with our aging data systems, which provide the reports accessed by this new search tool. Replacing these systems is part of our comprehensive plan to improve the resources we provide to our consumers. This tool should never be used as a single means of researching a facility or other care option. It’s also not the best place to start a search. We strongly encourage anyone who is considering a long-term care facility to start by visiting the Aging and Disability Resource Connection of Oregon website and participating in the options counseling process with the trained professionals in our service locations. Once a consumer narrows down the list of facilities for considering, the search tool is a good way to explore a provider’s compliance history. We hope you find the new tool useful. We thank you for your partnership in ensuring we are doing our best to meet Oregonians’ needs. Ashley Carson Cottingham, Director-Aging & People with Disabilities / OR Dept of Human Services 503.947.1100 Website: https://adrcoforegon.org/consite/index.php

AMDA THE SOCIETY FOR POST-ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CARE MEDICINE

AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine is the only medical specialty society representing the community of over 50,000 medical directors, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other practitioners working in the various post-acute and long-term care (PA/LTC) settings. The Society’s 5,500 members work in skilled nursing facilities, long-term care and assisted living communities, CCRCs, home care, hospice, PACE programs, and other settings.

The Society has two affiliate organizations. The American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine runs a certification program for medical directors in PA/LTC, credentialing Certified Medical Directors (CMDs). The Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine oversees awards, community outreach, education, and research with the mission to advance the quality of life for persons in PA/LTC through inspiring, educating, and recognizing future and current health care professionals. Vision - A world in which all post-acute and long-term care patients and residents receive the highest- quality, compassionate care for optimum health, function, and quality of life. Mission - We promote and enhance the development of competent, compassionate, and committed medical practitioners and leaders to provide goal-centered care across all post-acute and long-term care settings. Dedicated to defining and improving quality, we advance our mission through timely professional development, evidence-based clinical guidance, and tireless advocacy on behalf of members, patients, families, and staff.

At the AMDA Meeting Expert Maureen Nash, MD, MS, FACP, offers guidance on preparing to care for mentally ill in PA/LTC:

“I hope to help people look at how they can focus their attention on addressing symptoms of mental illness and help these patients be more functional,” says Maureen Nash, MD, MS, the 2018 Annual Conference Meet the Expert speaker. “We are seeing more of these patients in this setting (PA/LTC). As little as five years ago, we said that those with chronic mental illness died 25 years before those without. That isn’t true anymore. We need to focus a little more attention and a little less stigma on this population," she says.

This request is being sent on behalf of members of the AGS Ethics Committee and is requesting your participation in a survey

stemming from the AGS Position Statement: Making Medical Treatment Decisions for

Unbefriended Older Adults. We want to hear from you about how to improve the plight of the "unbefriended" – socially isolated and vulnerable older adults. As members of the AGS Ethics Committee, we co-authored the "AGS Position Statement: Making Medical Treatment Decisions for Unbefriended Older Adults"1 which proposed policy and practice guidelines for patients who are "unbefriended" or at risk for becoming so. Now we need to know more about what current practices exist, the barriers to improving care, and any new innovative ideas from you. To continue this work, we and AGS are working with the Boston VA Healthcare System and Guardianship Policy Institute to design an online survey so that we can hear from you. To begin the survey, click here or copy and paste into your browser: https://novisurvey.net/ns/n/AGSUnbefriended.aspx More information about the survey:

• It's completely voluntary. • Your answers will remain anonymous – no identifying information will be collected about your or

your patients. Your IP address will not be collected. • It will take about 15 minutes to complete. • Your answers will remain anonymous – no identifying information will be collected about your or
