Plenary discussion: Introduction of high-grade solutions in construction sector

Reuse, recycle and innovate! The EU FP7 IRCOW project: Innovative Strategies for High Grade Material Recovery from Construction and Demolition Waste (C&DW) is slowly approaching its end. Throughout nearly three years of its implementation, the consortium has come out with some interesting results of technical and non-technical nature related to ma-naging C&DW as a resource of valuable materials which can be recovered for high--grade applications back in the construction sector.

The main objective of the final conference is to: ● present what has been achieved in terms of innovative approaches,

technologies and products advancing the way in which C&DW is currently managed;

● demonstrate which of the proposed innovations worked out in the frame of the IRCOW project are on a short track towards market uptake;

● discuss with the participants some proposals regarding changes in the political framework to make C&DW reuse and recycling happen more often and more effective.

One of the most precious values of the IRCOW project is a series of observations coming out from five case studies at real construction or demolition sites which were carried out in different parts of Europe. Each of them was focused on diffe-rent practical aspects of C&DW management towards material reuse, recovery and application for high-grade construction materials and components production. The case studies provided a unique opportunity to validate which of the solutions pro-posed by IRCOW are technically feasible, economically viable and can be realistical-ly applicable in market conditions. We would like to share these observations and conclusions with the audience and get your feedback and contributions to policy recommendations to encourage, stimulate and make C&DW reuse and recycling not only beneficial for the environment but attractive for businesses as well.

The topics of the conference will focus on such aspects of C&DW management: ● Smart and efficient processes to enable reuse of building components

recovered from C&DW ● Innovative sorting technologies for C&DW recycling systems ● High-grade construction materials and components from recycled C&DW ● Innovations in practice: results of the IRCOW case studies (approaches and

products) ● Market and environmental aspects of innovative technologies and products ● Expert recycling tool assessing environmental and human health risks ● Demo of a Stock Exchange service for C&DW recovered elements and mate-

rials together with a business model ● Policy recommendations

Who should attendWe extend our invitation to all interested in sustainable building, recycling techno-logies and recycling of C&DW in general. We especially welcome:

● Policy makers interested in waste management, ● Recycling companies, ● Demolition and construction firms, ● Certification bodies, ● Architects, ● Producers of building components and materials, ● Eco-design experts, ● Associations concerning building materials, ● Authorities, ● Environmental and Waste Managers ● Environmentalists in general.
