What are your hobbies? I enjoy playing piano, going to the gym and reading books. What’s your life goal? One of my dreams is to write a book. I did a lot of sociological research while I was at university so I’d like the book to be related to that somehow. What principles do you live your life by?My key principle is “virtue”, which means having a high moral standard and showing respect to other people. I’m not a religious person but more practical in nature.

What have your students taught you?Not only my students but Chinese people in general have taught me a lot about determination and hard work.

What, in your opinion, is the average Chinese student’s worst English learning habit?I think too many Chinese students study English in a non-interactive way. They have those A-Z vocabulary books and sit in a corner by themselves, trying to memorize words that they will probably never need to use anyway. Unfortunately, most of the Chinese teaching and exam system is structured around these books.

Got any favorite sports? Do you play them?My favorite sport is basketball. I used to play a lot when I was a college student.

What have your students taught you?I have learned a lot from our students and the most important thing they teach me is that whoever you are and wherever you go, you should keep learning.

What, in your opinion, is the average Chinese student’s worst English learning habit?Reciting vocabulary, in my opinion, is the worst learning habit. Language involves practice and application. Many students recite words not for communication but for exams. Consequently, they can get good scores but not be able to communicate.

How to work with foreign colleagues?Direct / straightforwardPeople from foreign countries may be more accustomed to a direct and straightforward approach; they do not like playing a guessing game.

Being more extraverted helpsIf you have any hobbies or ideas about something, try to share with them people – you may just find you have a lot more in common than you at first thought.

Being professionalForeign colleagues are often very easy going after work, however, during working time foreign colleagues may prefer to focus on work related matters.

Result drivenIf you have managed to convince foreign colleagues on your plan or idea at an early stage, you may find it is much easier to work with them afterwards and also easier to put the idea into practice. Early engagement is key here; the earlier and more detailed, the more energetic and enthusiastic they will become.

Why are you teaching English?Initially it was a good fit for my move to China, however it has opened up some great opportunities I was previously unaware of.

What do you think is the best study method? There is no single one however immersion conquers academics – always. Learn by doing (oh and our students need to stop reading and start listening!)

What is the biggest benefit of teaching at Elite? Flexibility – although we have a structured program, I like it when we get chance to teach using our individual skills and based on the needs of our students/customers.

What, in your opinion, is the average Chinese student’s worst English learning habit? Mostly it’s Chinglish related or habitual mistakes that may have come from High School or earlier tuition. “so-so”, “delicious” and “seldom” are banned from my classes as a result !

What would you like to see happen at Elite in the future? I think we have an opportunity to offer our students continued development as learning should never stop.
