The firstAircnaft to fly Coast-to-Coast

11166. WRIGHT, WILBUR & ORVILLE. Relic print and anauthentic piece of wing fabric from a Wright Brothers biplane - TheWright Vin Fiz. The "Vin Fiz" is famous as the first aircraft to fl1coast-to-coast in l9ll with 70 landings and 12 crashes en route fromNY to California. (Landings were made in a dozen states...New York.Pennsylvania , Ohio, lndiana, lllinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma.Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.) It was the media eventof l9l I when flying coast-to-coast was an impossible dream. The pilotcompleted the flight at Long Beach with his leg in a cast and crutchesstrapped to the side of his fragile Wright biplane, The sponsor of theflight was the Vin Fiz Company, a Chicago-based grape sodacompany.

A 4 square-inch swatch of the original wing fabric is attached to thisaviation relic print (15" x 20"). The fabric was preserved when theSmithsonian restored the aircraft. lncluded is a certificate ofauthenticity and detailed information about the plane and its historicflight fiom the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and SpaceMuseum. The ultimate reward for an aviation enthusiast. A postal cardflown on the Vin Fiz was recently on sale at Siegal Auction Galleriesfor $50,000. Comes with a certificate of authenticity from theSmithsonian Institute. In excellent condition. $950

Orvillealso developed the first wind tunnel (1901);discovered movable, verlical tail to avoidtailspins (1902); and became president ofAmerican Wright Co. after the death of hisbrother Wilbur in 1912. An official 1930 Sporting Licenseissued by the National AeronauticAssociation darkly signed as chairman of theContest Committee under the auspices of theFederation Aeronautique Internationale,Urited States License No. l12 is issued toArthur J. Edwards born in Springfield, IL onMar 10, 1888, giving him permission toparticipate in their air racing contests thatyear. Small quafter-length photo of Edwardsin flight gear above his license number.Blind stamps on both sections of foldedlicense card. ln excellent condition. $3.800
