Compaq India has joined hands with ElectronicsResearch and Development Centre of India(ERDCI), Noida, to set up a competence centrethat would enable e-governance in Noida city and

various other states.

Residents will be able to pay electricity andphone bills, file I- T returns, register marriagesand deaths, among other things at informationkiosks located in the city. Once the projectbecomes fully operational citizens can payutilities, get grievance redressal and a variety of other essential jobs through these info kiosks.

ITC plans to launch 30 more rural mallsin 2005-06

In India, Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) Ltd plansto open 30 more rural malls in 2005-06, in synergywith its fast growing e-Choupal network, after successfully implemented the country¶s first private

sector rural mall known as Choupal Sagar at Sehorein Madhya Pradesh. The construction of nine mallsthree each in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh andUttar Pradesh is nearing completion.

The scenario in case of internet spread is gloomier and

hardly any rural areas have access to broadband internetconnections.In India as on April, 2005 total no. of broad bandconnections were only 2.28 lacs which is a meager 0.02%.

The primary reasons for the slow growth of internet incountry have been infrastructural bottlenecks, financial nonviability and absence of cost effective reliable technology.

With the advancement of technology, especially that inarea of Wireless in Local Loop (WLL), it has become

possible to provide internet facility even in remote villages

at affordable prices.
