The Chinese New Year Party was an unforgettable evening filled with

delightful musical performances, ‘not-so-challenging’ quizzes, delicious

food, and a lucky draw! Here I’m helping this prize-winner discover the

possibilities of her new toy — an MP3 player! Memories of the party, as

well as the Cantonese Music in Hong Kong Concert, which took place the

evening before, can be found on pages 5-9. I am glad to tell you that both

events were filmed and have been made available for viewing on Radio 4’s

website: radio4.rthk.hk.

There is always a sense of rejuvenation on Radio 4 in April. I think it’s partly

to do with our annual coverage of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

From now till end of June, on Sundays at 8pm, feel the excitement of the

Choir Finals and celebrate the joy of music-making in the Winners’ Concerts.

Widely recognised as the ‘Father of Contemporary Music in Hong Kong’,

Doming Lam has just celebrated his 60th year as a composer. At 86, he

still devotes himself wholeheartedly to his musical art. Jonathan Douglas

and Calvin Lai will host a special programme entitled Sixty Years of Music

Creativity - Doming Lam to place the Maestro into a well-deserved limelight.

To whet your appetite, Kathy Lam, Radio 4’s presenter, will tell you about

Doming Lam from the angle of a daughter!

On the subject of contemporary music, please turn to the Cover Story for

Radio 4’s coverage of The Intimacy of Creativity (IC) 2013, a project which

looks into the interplay of music creativity and interpretation. This year,

the project’s line-up includes three distinguished artists, violinist Cho-liang

Lin, composer and pianist Bright Sheng, and bassist Edgar Meyer, who will

appear at RTHK Studio One. They will play for us, and share with us their

musical thoughts. Jointly presented by the Hong Kong University of Science

and Technology and RTHK Radio 4, the two sessions entitled From Bach to

Bright, and The Versatile Virtuoso are part of the IC project.

Last month, we repeated a special series in remembrance of the late Father

Ciaran Kane. In April and May, every Sunday at noon, you can listen to

episodes of Gloria from his longstanding series on sacred music. I am

pleased to tell you that three Gloria programmes will also be put onto the

RTHK Memory website, as a special tribute to Father Kane. You can find

them at rthk.hk/special/rthkmemory.

On 20 February, RTHK Studio One was packed

with an enthusiastic audience, enjoying the unique

music developed in Hong Kong – ‘spirit music’. It

was popular in Hong Kong after the Second World

War where traditional Cantonese music was fused

with the dance beats from the west, and authentic

Chinese music instruments such as gaohu, yangqin

and xiao co-existed with the Western violin,

xylophone and bass guitar.

In this Cantonese Music in Hong Kong Concert,

the veteran musicians not only brought back the

nostalgia of the good old days but also showcased

the creative achievement of the former local

musicians which nowadays may be overlooked.

An evening of Chinese music, lantern riddles, delicacies and lots of prizes, the Friends of Radio 4 New Year Party was held on 21 February, bringing lots of fun to the participants. This year, we invited pianists Yim Wan and Grace Lau, and Young Music Makers 2012 sheng soloist Kevin Cheng Ho-kwan, sanxian and pipa soloist Nickolas Chan Hiu-fung, and guqin soloist Sunny Chung Siu-sun

to bring us cheerful and festive Chinese music.

充滿喜慶的音樂、猜燈迷、幸運大抽獎、豐富美食⋯⋯第四台和第四台之友協會於2月21日舉辦了熱鬧的新春派對,與第四台之友一起送龍迎蛇!

香港電台弦樂四重奏成立三年以來走訪各地演出,除了去年於意大利羅馬和法國第戎 (Dijon) 巡迴表演外,早前亦到過汕頭大學作文化交流。今個春天,四位成員 (李海南、一丸綾子、陳子信以及貝樂安) 亦會在本地四所大專院校分別舉行四場校園音樂會。

除了演奏海頓、舒曼和舒伯特等弦樂四重奏作品外,他們更肩負推廣本地音樂創作的使命,在校園音樂會中分別演出兩首香港作曲家的近期創作。

早前3月底於嶺南大學演出後,香港電台弦樂四重奏於4月10日晚上8時在香港大學陸祐堂舉行「香港電台弦樂四重奏三週年音樂會」,演奏陳慶恩的 《好風過處》*作為香港首演。這首為弦樂和笙而編寫的五重奏於去年11月底在羅馬首演,歐洲觀眾十分喜愛,樂曲揉合了中西音樂元素,充份體現香港中西文化的匯合。作曲家陳慶恩對中國樂器認識深厚,而且鑽研西方近代作曲技巧多年,他先後編寫過以「風」為題的新音樂,也用上了中國笙為主奏樂器。至於今次校園音樂會中擔任笙獨奏的盧思泓更與陳慶恩合作無間,首演過多首由陳慶恩創作的新曲,對他的創作了解甚深。盧思泓在去年的歐洲音樂會中與香港電台弦樂四重奏已合作純熟,今次演出定必更見火花。

另外,四位成員在4月16日晚上於香港科技大學的音樂會亦會送上年青作曲家劉泳浲的《氣味》。這首簡短雋永的作品將本地新一代創作人的音樂風格表露無遺。在音樂會中觀眾還可以欣賞到中樂作品《瑤族舞曲》的弦樂四重奏版本。

Following their European tour, the four members of the RTHK Quartet, Le Hoai-nam, Ayako Ichimaru, Elvis Chan and Laurent Perrin plan to visit 4 local universities and academy, and bring audiences with their performances of standard repertoires, as well as local composers’ modern works!

On the evening of 10 April, the RTHK Quartet will celebrate their Third Anniversary at Lok Yew Hall, University of Hong Kong with a commissioned work written by Hong Kong composer Chan Hing-yan entitled As the Wind Goes By*. Hong Kong sheng player Loo Sze-wang will join the 4 members in the Hong Kong première. The Quartet will also perform a work written by a young local composer, Galison Lau, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on the evening of 16 April. Moreover, they will be performing one of the audiences’ favourites, a traditional Chinese work called Dance of the Yao People.

Some 55 years ago, the Soviet Union shocked the world by launching Sputnik, the first satellite, into the earth’s orbit. Six months later, in April 1958, the United States responded by launching the 23-year-old Van Cliburn to the First International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. ‘American Sputnik, developed in secret’ was what Moscow Radio said of the 6-foot-4 gold medallist from Texas.

When Van Cliburn passed away on 27 February, the Moscow victory, along with the piano competition he founded in 1962, is what the 78-year-old pianist is mostly remembered.

But how many know Van Cliburn was a great grand-pupil of Franz Liszt? And his pledge to be a concert pianist was inspired by a live performance of Rachmaninov the Great?

Born Harvey Lavan Cliburn Jr., Van, as most people called him, began piano lesson at 3 under his mother, Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn, who had studied under Arthur Friedheim, a pupil of Franz Liszt.

One day in 1939, Van got sick at home and missed a concert his mother had got tickets for. It was a recital by Rachmaninov. Lucky for the 5-year-old boy, the concert was broadcast live on radio. ‘Mommy, I think I want to be a concert pianist when I grow up’ is what he said as mother returned and told him about the concert.

Eight years later, in 1947, the 13-year-old made his concerto debut with a professional orchestra, the Houston Symphony. And the work? Tchaikovsky’s B flat minor Concerto, the very work that made him a national hero eleven years later.

The 1958 Moscow triumph was such a sensation that many forgot Van’s growing mastery over the work since his 1947 debut. Successively, the blond teenage Texan had perfected it with the New York Philharmonic under then-Music Director Dimitri Mitropolous, and with the Cleveland Orchestra and its legendary George Szell. ‘Extraordinary skills and projection,’ remarked the maestro, a brilliant pianist in his own right.

All this attests to one thing: Van Cliburn’s success at the Tchaikovsky competition wasn’t an overnight phenomenon (though it might be in terms of Cold War politics), but a long process of artistic growth plus some hereditary element. The one consoling thought for the Russian hosts, while they were giving away the top prize, would have been that the American’s coach was a Russian - the late Madame Rosina Lhevinne taught Van Cliburn at The Juilliard School.

Van’s success led him to some of the most-coveted engagements any performing artists would dream of. Aside from recording with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony (the Beethoven Fourth Piano Concerto was the last for the late maestro’s glorious discography), he performed at the White House from the Truman through the Obama administrations.

His early fame, however, took a heavy toll on his artistic growth. He was burned out, and he knew it. In 1978, he withdrew from concert life, and, although he returned eleven years later, the magic was gone for good.

But his legacy will continue with Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Over the years, the quadrennial contest has produced a league of brilliant pianists around the world, including Radu Lupu, Cristina Ortiz, winners of the 1966 and 1969 rounds respectively. The 14th in the series, starting in May 2013, will be the first without the towering man that made it all happen. But his spirit of dedication, diligence, and giving will always be there.

President Obama honoured Van Cliburn with the National Medal of Arts in 2011

The former Director of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO), renowned pipa virtuoso and conductor Professor Wong Ching-ping passed away on 21 February 2013 at the age of 65 due to a stroke.

A student of pipa master Lui Pui-yuen, Wong moved to Taiwan from Hong Kong in 1967. He had been a strong advocate in Chinese music even when he was a student at the National Taiwan University. When the TCO was established in 1979, he was made its first conductor and Deputy Director. From 1991-2005, he served as the Orchestra’s Director. During his term, he was active in encouraging musical exchanges between Taiwan and China, introducing new Chinese compositions, and establishing a sound foundation for the Orchestra. Wong was much involved in the performing technique of modern pipa playing. He premièred many pipa works, including the challenging work The Pipa, composed by Hsu Po-yun. Wong was awarded the National Award for Arts and Most Outstanding Asian Artists in Taiwan.

One day following the death of Wong Ching-ping, renowned German conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch died on 22 February 2013 at the age of 89. Sawallisch was born in Munich in 1923. After graduated from that city’s Academy of Music, Sawallisch began his conducting career in 1947 at the Opera Theater of Augsburg. In 1953, he became the youngest conductor to lead the Berlin Philharmonic. He served as Music Director of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and was Artistic Director of Geneva’s Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He was most remembered as Philadelphia Orchestra’s conductor laureate and its sixth music director, and for his directorship at the Bavarian State Opera. In 1997, he led the Philadelphia Orchestra in the first live internet concert ‘cybercast’ made by a major American orchestra. His artistry was recognised with many awards including the Toscanini Gold Baton, honourary degrees from various universities and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Distinguished Artist Award.

琵琶名家王正平及指揮家沙華利舒辭世前台北市立國樂團團長、知名琶琵演奏家及指揮家王正平�授,在2月21日因中風不幸離世,享年六十五歲。

王正平早年於香港師從琵琶名家呂培原,1967年移居台灣,畢業於台灣大學,在學時已積極推動國樂發展。王正平曾任中廣國樂團團員及指揮;台北市立國樂團在1979年成立時,他是首任指揮兼副團長。他在1991至2005年間任台北市立國樂團團長,任內領導樂團積極拓展兩岸國樂交流,大量引進海內外優秀國樂作品,為台灣國樂界奠下深厚基礎。他一生投入研究現代琵琶演出技法,並首演前衞琵琶曲如許博允的《琵琶隨筆》等。王正平曾獲頒台灣國家文藝獎、亞洲最傑出藝人獎。

就在王正平離世的第二天,德國著名指揮沙華利舒以八十九歲高齡辭世。沙華利舒1923年生於慕尼克。他在德國的音樂學院畢業後,在奧格斯堡歌劇院展開其指揮生涯。1953年沙華利舒以最年輕指揮的姿態領導柏林愛樂樂團;他曾當過多隊樂團的音樂或藝術總監,如維也納交響樂團、漢堡管弦樂團和瑞士羅曼第樂團等。最為人傳誦的,是他和費城樂團以及巴伐利亞市立歌劇院的緊密關係。於1997年,他曾帶領費城樂團,成為全美首隊透過互聯網演出的大型樂團。沙華利舒一生獲頒多項殊榮,包括托斯卡尼尼金指揮棒獎和多間院校的榮譽學位,以及由賓夕凡尼亞州州長頒發的傑出藝術家獎。

今年2月27日以七十八歲高齡病逝的這位德州小子,在1958年4月的首屆柴可夫斯基國際鋼琴大賽,擊敗60多位高手,從蘇聯領袖赫魯曉夫手上領取金牌,銀牌由中國的劉詩昆和蘇聯選手奪得。

格拉賓奪冠絕非僥倖。劉詩昆形容這位美國對手音樂中的「伸縮、吊放、鬆緊、虛實」,讓他得第一,「我是心服口服的」。

也許不甚為人所知,是格拉賓的母親是鋼琴皇帝李斯特的徒孫,兒子三歲時便親自�授。加上後天的勤奮,成功並非偶然。

但是有代價的。國家英雄式的頻密演出、錄音滯礙了他的藝術昇華。他決定閉關十一年,可是復出時光華已去。

然而,他以自己的名字成立鋼琴比賽,自1962年首屆以來,每四年一次讓大批鋼琴家上位。今年5月是第十四屆,可說是透過音樂平台,遺愛人間。

J : You’re playing in Hong Kong the Mozart and Beethoven, is this your choice?

L : In the beginning the orchestra asked me to do Beethoven Symphony No. 5, but I didn’t accept it because I told them that, for me, Beethoven’s Fifth is very, very difficult. Mozart is very easy but for me Beethoven is not. Finally we came to an agreement and I accepted it. I have conducted this piece many times, but after every concert of Beethoven’s Fifth, I feel that it is more difficult than before.

J : What do you think are the main challenges of putting across a convincing performance?

L : I think Beethoven is the greatest musician and almost everybody in the world knows this piece. Everyone knows the motif. But for every professional musician, especially for professional orchestral players, almost everybody is scared of this, scared of every note of Beethoven’s Fifth. This is strange, right? Most popular, most difficult. For the audience, this is very popular and familiar. For the professional musicians, this is the most difficult piece.

J : The rhythm of that opening motif is not easy, is it?

L : No, not at all. When I first listened to this beginning motif, I felt that this is nothing like what is written in the score, I felt like this is a triplet, with the first note on the beat, but actually this first note is after the rest. So the first time I listened to this, I didn’t think it was very difficult. Also, now I think that if we change the rhythm, and move the first note to the downbeat, it would be a lot easier. But after an eighth rest, it’s a hundred or a thousand times more difficult. The musicians have to understand the intentions of the conductor, everybody has to have the same feeling of the conductor’s upbeat. If somebody understands a different meaning from what the conductor intended, it would be a disaster.

J : You’re also doing the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 22; do you see opera in the piano concertos? I speak to a lot of pianists and they say that when they play Mozart concertos, it’s almost like playing opera on the piano.

L : Exactly! If people don’t know Mozart’s operas, I don’t think they can play any of his instrumental pieces very well. They cannot understand. You have to know what Mozart’s operas are about, at least three or four of them. His writing, especially for the major melody or voice of any piece, particularly for the piano, strings or any other instruments, comes from the feeling of a singer’s voice. When he wrote the melodies for instruments, I think, at that time, he was thinking about how singers would sing it.

J : Like an operatic aria.

L : If someone can understand Italian, and then study the operas,

it would be a lot easier to understand Mozart!

Hailed by The Financial Times as ‘the city’s most innovative musical experience’, The

Intimacy of Creativity (IC), now in its third year, is an innovative and public dialogue

between composers and performers, like that of Brahms and Joachim, with the goal

of creating masterpieces of this century through challenging questions and tireless

revisions. It is presented by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Leading this groundbreaking project is the Artistic Director, renowned composer,

and pianist, Bright Sheng, joined by two world-class guest artists: double-bass player

Edgar Meyer and violinist Cho-liang Lin. In addition, 6 young composers and other

distinguished performers provide depth of imagination and skill to realize the dream.

IC will be in residence at RTHK Radio 4, its media partner, with three exciting events

presented in Studio One: ‘Creative Dialogue’ on 25 April, ‘From Bach to Bright’: Meet-

the-Artist with Cho-liang Lin and Bright Sheng on 26 April, and ‘The Versatile Virtuoso’

with Edgar Meyer on 1 May. In the ‘Creative Dialogue’, there will be discussions by

composers and performers on two works, Roger Zare’s Geometries and Dai Bo’s Kong

Gu You Lan. Last year, the discussion was so vigorous as everyone gathered around the

piano to talk, that they completely forgot the departure time! In the two Meet-the-Artist

sessions, you will hear three maestros, who will share their insights and musical stories

with you. More details can be found on page 19.

RTHK Radio 4 will also record the two World Première Concerts, on 28 April and 5

May, at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre. These concerts will be recorded and broadcast

on Radio 4. The concerts will present the final result of the two weeks of collaboration

and revision. RTHK Quartet will also perform on 16 April, at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art

Hall, as part of the HKUST Music Alive! Please refer to P.11 for the ticket request form.

I first saw Cho-liang Lin on stage in the early 80s when he joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic in a sensational interpretation of Saint-Säens’ Violin Concerto No. 3. I vividly remember that the harmonics he played in the second movement were clear and loud. The audience loved him, and I counted the number of curtain calls – 7! He returned to Hong Kong on quite a few other occasions, but the most unforgettable performance I found was in Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera at the Jockey Club Amphitheatre. He walked around, yelled, hit a gong, and even played water, as well as his violin.

Bright Sheng is one of the most successful composers today. He was born in Shanghai in 1955. During the Cultural Revolution he was sent to the remote Qinghai, and there established a strong tie with Chinese music. I first listened to his delightful arrangements of folksongs on the piano, played by the celebrated Chinese pianist Bao Huiqiao. Yet, his music also can be extremely driving, as in the case of Nanking! Nanking! , a threnody to the Nanking Massacre. Sheng is a great communicator, not only with music but also in words and as the key promoter behind The Intimacy of Creativity project.

The word ‘difficult’ seems to be non-existant in Edgar Meyer’s vocabulary. I was amazed to listen to his playing of Sarasate’s Gypsy Air on the double bass! He transcribed and played Bach’s cello suites on his double bass, imbuing them with a special flavour. You can find him one moment playing in Schubert’s Trout Quintet, and the next moment jamming with banjo player Béla Fleck in a bluegrass style. He is a gifted composer too. One of his works is a violin concerto dedicated to Hilary Hahn. I am always intrigued by the unique sound and rhythm created by Meyer in his compositions. His music is lyrical, unconventional, yet very approachable.

From Bach to Bright In RTHK Studio One, Cho-liang Lin will play a solo violin piece by Bach on his 1715 Titian Stradivarius. Along with pianist Nolan Pearson (The Intimacy of Creativity 2013 Guest Artist), and in the presence of the composer, Lin will play selections from Bright Sheng’s Three Fantasies. Bright Sheng will also play a piano work of his own, My Song.

Lin and Sheng will talk about their exciting careers; how different people, pieces, and events have inspired them. As two Asian musicians most celebrated in the west, Lin and Sheng will share with us the Asian musical influences they see around the world. They will also have an inspiring dialogue from the perspectives of composer and interpreter.

The Versatile Virtuoso The double bass may not be the most famous solo instrument, but it is certainly one of the most impressive. Edgar Meyer will bring his huge instrument to RTHK Studio One to let you feel the magic of the double bass. He will also play a number of pieces including his work Concert Duo, together with violinist and The Intimacy of Creativity 2013 Guest Artist, Katie Hyun, and share some of his stories about his instrument, which may include how he

80年初,我首次欣賞林昭亮在台上演出。當時只是二十出頭,頭髮及肩的他,與香港管弦樂團合作,熱情地演出了聖桑的第三小提

琴協奏曲。我清楚地記得,他在第二樂章結尾部份的泛音奏得響亮清脆。觀眾很喜歡他的演出 ⋯⋯ 我心裡數著,他一共返到台前七

次接受觀眾熱烈的掌聲!往後的日子,他多次亮相香港舞台。印象最深的,是他在賽馬會綜藝館演出譚盾的《鬼戲》。除了拉琴之

外,他還四處行走、呼叫、打鑼,甚至「玩水」!

在一號錄播室中,林昭亮會以那部1715年製造的Stradivarius拉

奏巴赫的無伴奏小提琴作品,也會與「創意間的親暱2013」客

席藝術家之一的鋼琴家彼亞遜 (Nolan Pearson) ,為我們演出盛

宗亮的三首幻想曲選段。作為一位鋼琴家,盛宗亮也會現場演

奏他的創作《我的歌》。當然,林昭亮和盛宗亮亦會談到他們

的音樂人生,包括有甚麼人與事曾啟發他們創作或演奏。兩位

來自亞洲的音樂奇才,對於今天亞洲如何影響世界樂壇,別有

一番見解。作曲家能與演奏家交流會面,定必有熱烈的討論。

闖出低音新天地

低音大提琴肯定不是最常見的獨奏樂器,卻令人留下

深刻印象。艾加‧美亞將帶來他那龐然大樂器演奏多

首音樂,並會聯同「創意間的親暱2013」客席藝術家

Katie Hyun 演奏他的《音樂會二重奏》,讓你領略

低音大提琴的魅力。他會講述他與「它」的故事,其

中可能提到如何與它一同巡迴世界各地!艾加‧美亞

獨特的音樂背景有助他巧妙地融合不同風格。究竟他

盛宗亮是當今最享負盛名的作曲家之一。他在上海出生,在文化大革命期間被

下放到青海,這經歷卻強化了他對民族音樂的熱愛。我第一次是在中國鋼琴家

鮑蕙蕎的錄音中,認識到盛宗亮的音樂 ─ 那是由他改編多首優美的中國旋律。

然而,他的音樂亦極具震撼力 ─ 《南京!南京!》就是其中的例子,當中的樂

音太澎湃了!盛宗亮善於溝通,不單止以音符,更是在語言上,自然而然他成

為了「創意間的親暱」背後的靈魂人物。

在艾加‧美亞的字典裡似乎沒有「艱難」這兩個字。聽他以低音大提琴拉奏薩

拉沙替的《流浪者之歌》,�我目瞪口呆!他也曾改編並演奏巴赫的無伴奏大

提琴組曲。艾加‧美亞經常穿梭於不同樂種之間,有時他會參與演出舒伯特的

《鱒魚》五重奏,有時候他會與拍檔費拉克以美國風格即興演奏。他更是一位

傑出的作曲家,曾為漢恩譜寫小提琴協奏曲。我常常被他獨一無二的琴音和節

奏所吸引。他的作品充滿動感、著重線條,非一般的,卻易於接受。

音樂「傑作」如《紅樓夢》

華裔作曲家盛宗亮說,讀《紅樓夢》,各人有各人的偏好:對研

究文本的紅學家而言,角色的一句閒聊或許暗藏深意;而對普

通讀者來說,浪漫故事和詩文本身,已足夠吸引。一首音樂作品

若稱得上「傑作」,在盛宗亮看來,也需像《紅樓夢》那樣,

「各方面都比較完美」,既能感動愛樂者,又經得起行內人研究

推敲。他擔任藝術總監的「創意間的親暱」,為的是聯繫創作

者、演奏者和聽眾,打破台上台下看與被看的既有模式。

香 港 科 技 大 學 人 文 社 會 科 學 學 院 主 辦 的 第 三 屆 「 創 意 間

的親暱」,將於4月22日至5月5日在港舉行,官方名稱是

「盛宗亮與國際作曲家 / 演奏家聚會香港」。盛宗亮說,活動辦

了三屆,名聲有了,參與者也愈發踴躍。今年,他們從一百四十

四份申請中挑選六位年青作曲家,也請來低音大提琴家兼作曲家

艾加‧美亞和小提琴家林昭亮擔任傑出客席藝術家。在十數天的

討論中進行修改,並安排世界首演這些作曲家的室樂作品。「作

品可能是幾年前已完成,也可能是剛剛寫好,不過當音樂擺在我

們面前,就需要重新雕琢。」盛宗亮說,眾人圍坐討論後,作曲

家將作品帶回去修改,改好後在香港科技大學預演,預演後如有不

滿意再改。這樣來回三、四次之後,最後安排在香港大會堂首演。

今次演出的作品,既有二十四歲失明作曲家代博的小提琴與鋼琴

合奏作品《空穀幽蘭》和美國作曲家史奴頓 (Steven Snowden)

為鋼琴和弦樂五重奏而寫的三樂章作品《魔鬼的九道難題》,

也有盛宗亮和艾加‧美亞兩位知名作曲家的新作。「我們希望

觀眾體會,一首作品從雛形到最後完成,當中會經歷怎樣的過

程。」盛宗亮說。而且,除最後兩場首演音樂會外,其餘的活

動如公開排練和午間講座等,全部免費開放讓樂迷參與。

作曲家與演奏家和聽眾溝通的機會

類似「創意間的親暱」的活動,在盛宗亮看來,不單能夠

令到觀眾參與討論,也給了作曲家與演奏家和聽眾溝通的

機會,打破過往觀念中「創作者主動聽眾被動」的二元對

立。他說,如今當一名作曲家,既幸福又困難重重。幸福

在於現今的音樂世界「沒有框框」,每個人都在寫自己喜

歡的風格,而且「任何風格都可以被接受」。同樣,困

難也不少。過去的作曲家,比如貝多芬和莫扎特,都是非

常出色的演奏家。這樣的傳統,到我們這時代,「已經流

失了」。當大部份作曲家不演奏而演奏家大多不作曲時,

「脫節」不可避免地產生。「作曲家不懂演奏,會造成一種

『閉門造車』的可能。」盛宗亮說。因此,就愈見溝通的重

要。對他來說,一首好作品一定要具備兩方面要素:對音樂專

業的人來說,這曲子有深度,值得推敲;至於並沒有掌握太

多樂理知識的普通樂迷,聽了好曲子,也會喜歡,「因為有動

人的地方」。「比如布拉姆斯的作品,搞音樂的人研究它分析

它,能看到各種各樣的邏輯性。」盛宗亮說:「就算不懂音樂

的人聽了也會被感動,因為好聽。」

The third season of HKUST’s The Intimacy of Creativity 2013

(IC) will be held in Hong Kong from 22 April to 5 May. During

the two-week partnership, six young composers, selected from

more than 140 candidates, will revise and present their chamber

music works after in-depth discussion with other artists and the

audience. The revised pieces will have their debut in World

Première Concerts at City Hall on 28 April and 5 May.

As Bright Sheng, the Artistic Director of IC 2013, said in an

interview with RTHK Radio 4, this kind of partnership connects

composers and performers as well as the audience. And

acceptance of the audience, in his opinion, is an important

indicator to access whether or not a composition could be

regarded as ‘masterpiece’.

Sheng, one of the foremost composers of our time, also spoke

about the happiness and difficulties of being a composer.

‘Luckily, there are few “limits” in today’s music world, so that

composers are able to develop their own styles in a relatively

free way. However, since fewer and fewer composers are equally

interested in being performers, a kind of “disjointedness” may

appear, which may affect the quality and performability of

their works.’ Sheng hopes that The Intimacy of Creativity will

encourage and promote communication between not only

performers and composers but also the audience, both on the

stage and off.

14 April : Verdi’s Aida

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) accepted a commission from the Egyptian Viceroy to create a grandiose new work for the opening of the new opera house in Cairo scheduled for 1870. Because of the proximity of the dates of the two major events, it has often been mistakenly reported that Aida was written to celebrate the inauguration of the Suez Canal.

In any case, although the opera was completed in time, the world première could not take place as intended due to the fact that the costumes and scenery were being made in Paris, and Paris was under siege by the Germans in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war. In the end, Aida was presented in Cairo in December 1871, a year later than the scheduled date.

In Aida, Verdi wanted to show that he was capable of great variety, moving from grandiose crowd scenes to individual characters, from mass emotions to intimate drama. Despite the over-emphasis many productions place on the massive triumphant scene which often distorts the focus of this opera, Aida is really an intimate love story expressing powerful inner emotions of the four main protagonists. This is great music not to be missed.

In our famous recording of 1955, the title role is sung by the legendary Maria Callas, possibly the greatest singing actress of all time. The Egyptian general Radames is sung by tenor Richard Tucker; the Ethiopian king Amonasro is interpreted by baritone Tito Gobbi;

The Sunday Opera listing for April consists of a lively opera buffa, a French adaption of a great Shakespearean tragedy,

a heroic drama set in ancient Egypt, and a story about the life and romance of a famous actress.

7 April : Rossini’s La Cenerentola

Partly due to the limitations of the stage mechanism of the Teatro Valle of Rome and partly on the advice of the librettist Giacomo Ferretti, the theatre manager commissioned this version of the Cinderella fairy-tale from Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) with the specification that all supernatural elements in the story should be ignored.

Thus, instead of losing one of her slippers, the protagonist leaves one of her bracelets for the handsome prince to find her. Instead of the fairy godmother, we have the prince’s tutor, whose wisdom and benevolence ensure the victory of virtue over greed and cruelty.

Rossini wrote this sparkling comedy when he was 25 years old, one year after his famous Barber of Seville. It took him three weeks to complete the entire opera, somewhat longer than usual for this composer of extraordinary speed. Its première in January 1817 was truly successful, and it was revived every season for the next 63 years, until 1880.

This work has regained its former popularity in recent decades with the re-emergence of superb bel canto singers with beautiful voices and brilliant technique such as mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza, tenor Luigi Alva, and baritone Renato Capecchi in this legendary studio recording with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado.

Adriana Lecouvreur by Francesco Cilea (1866-1950) is the last work to be presented in the Sunday Opera series for April. A complete recording featuring the fabulous partnership of soprano Renata Scotto and tenor Plácido Domingo will be played. The cast also includes baritone Sherrill Milnes and mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova, with James Levine conducting the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London in superb form.

The libretto of Adriana Lecouvreur is based on events in the life of the famous French actress Adrienne Lecouvreur, who achieved great fame during the early 18th century. The plot is built around the real triangle relationship between Adriana, Maurizio the Count of Saxony, and the Princess of Bouillon. The opera ends with the diva’s demise through inhaling the fragrance of a bouquet of poisoned flowers.

This opera is the most successful and enduring work of Francesco Cilea who came under the strong influence of verismo, the realistic style of operatic composition which became the dominant force in Italian music during the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Cilea, however, developed a highly lyrical melodic style combined with harmonic and tonal shadings influenced by French composers of a generation past.

Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896) was an exact contemporary of Wagner and Verdi. He had a special gift for melodies, and at his prime, he was one of the most admired and respected French composers. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome for composition on graduation from the Paris Conservatoire, of which he became the Director later in life. He wrote a score of operas on ambitious subjects based on great literature. On two of these, Mignon and Hamlet, his fame now rests.

First produced in Paris in 1868, Hamlet was set to a libretto by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier that followed Shakespeare’s plot quite faithfully, retaining the key episodes and reducing only the non-essential details and characters. Thomas was, however, too eager to yield to the prevailing French grand opera conventions and fashionable taste of the Parisian public. This explains its less-than-frequent revival in our time. Yet the work received a rapturous welcome and was considered the most important French opera of its age.

The protagonist’s drinking song and Ophélia’s mad scene are amongst the most celebrated highlights of the opera.

Our distinguished cast includes baritone Thomas Hampson in the title role, soprano June Anderson as Ophélia, bass Samuel Ramey as King Claudius, and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves as Queen Gertrude. The Ambrosian Opera Chorus and The London Philharmonic Orchestra give excellent support under the baton of Antonio de Almeida.

March has occupied a special place in my calendar. Not so much because it is

typically associated with marking the beginning of Spring in Hong Kong, but because

that, to a lot of students singing in choirs, March signifies the arrival of the ‘Judgment

Day’ — the Choir Finals. When I was a high school student, the sound of Tsuen Wan

Town Hall had such an aura of authority about it that the mere mentioning of its

name in a rehearsal was bound to set off some commotion among the choristers.

Even years after I graduated, the advent of March still keeps reminding me of the

excitement and nervousness uniquely associated with performing in the Choir Finals.

What is important from a music educational view is that through participating

in competitions, musicians can grow together as a team, learn to appreciate one

another, and respect the differences in perspectives.

The Radio 4 production team is proud to be part of this momentous event once

again. Please join us on the radio every week so that we can bring you back to

the stage, where the choristers sang at the top of their voices and from the utmost

bottom of their hearts — for the school, for championship and for music.

去年,我首次在荃灣大會堂的合唱團決賽中,欣賞一隊中學男女混聲合唱團演唱由台灣作曲家周鑫泉根據徐志摩的詩作《雪花的快樂》而譜寫的歌曲。聽罷首句,我的心裏已不禁湧起一陣莫名的感動。他們温暖融和的歌聲、優美的樂句處理,固然令人動容不已;可是更令我難忘的,是目睹這群中學生隨著樂句到達頂峰,高聲唱出「——飛揚,飛揚,飛揚,——你看,我有我的方向!」實是令人震撼的一幕。在他們每一個青澀的眼神裡,我看見了理想,我看見了希冀 - 我看見了徐志摩。詩人完成《雪花的快樂》時也不過是位二十七歲的年青作家。那時候的他,想必也跟台上的同學一樣,正竭力地為生命歌唱,無悔地在空中飛揚!

今年,我再次聯同第四台的團隊在荃灣大會堂為你紀錄歌聲、搜集感動。盼望你也能透過團隊用心的製作,在悠揚的

歌聲中,感受到同學們向生命的高歌!

林樂培真的叫林樂培?

非也。在出生時,父母給他取名為林嶽培。可是「嶽」字太難寫了,所以他後來把之改

成林岳培。後來又因搞音樂的關係,再改為現有的名字。雖然林樂培是個快「樂」的

人,但他更熱愛音「樂」,所以大家應知道他的名字怎樣唸才對吧!

星期六下午5時至7時

只有一張幼稚園畢業文憑,也能進大學甚至唸到碩士程度?

對!因戰亂和林大師「無心向學、逢二進一」的關係,他讀至中二時已經

快二十歲了。加拿大多倫多大學的�授因著林樂培對音樂的熱誠,和他一

句本著「求學問、不是求學分」的心態而打動了大學�授,准許他旁聽大

學課程。後來又因這一句話而獲得南加州大學電影學院破格取錄,繼續以

旁聽生的身份成為電影《賓虛》的作曲家羅沙博士的得意門生。「畢業」

時林樂培還得全美最優異學生作品獎,甚至香港當年的西報也有報導呢!

林大師的音樂被狠批?

1964年他接受香港電台訪問,利用一台鋼琴和電台的設備,製成他的第一

首電子音樂作品。樂曲後來在他的作品演奏會上發表,卻換來樂評人猛烈

批評,音樂更被形容為「混亂⋯⋯不能接受⋯⋯無聊⋯⋯最不要得」;但

西報卻認為他的音樂極有貢獻。六十年來,林樂培的作品在全球五十二個

城市演出過並獲獎無數。他認同2005年諾貝爾經濟學獎得獎者的講法:

「人家愈反對愈要做」,並寄語年輕人不要被社會主流意見影響,方能突

圍而出。

「林樂培創作六十年」-杜格尊和賴建群會介紹林樂培六十年來的創作

歷程,並帶來著名管弦樂《昆蟲世界》,及其他獨奏和室樂作品。節目於

4月26日(星期五)晚上8時播出,5月1日(星期三)下午2時重播。

相信樂迷從網上或音樂會場刊中,都會閱讀過有「香港新音樂之父」之稱

的林樂培的簡歷。這些資料看來準確,其實有很多「漏洞」。且讓我這位

跟林大師有著「親密關係」的人,來個大披露!

林樂培是位小提琴和歌唱能手?

一點也不錯。他曾經在香港管弦樂團前身的中英樂團拉奏小提琴多年,

當年的隊友還包括今天港樂董事局主席劉元生先生。此外,因他兒時在

修院讀書的關係,在訓練有素下,唱得一「口」不錯的拉丁經文歌。他

還把這些「技倆」,於加拿大唸書時在聖堂對著空棺木唱安魂曲來賺取

生活費!退休後的林樂培,除了創作室樂作品外,還應�會邀請寫有大

量聖樂和答唱詠,其中包括一百五十首詩篇和廣東話版的「信經」,可

說是晚年的一個小壯舉!

少數民族的音樂、文化、歷史和習俗,一向是二十世紀以來,中國音樂

創作的一個靈感泉源。從早期的江文也、馬思聰、丁善德,至當代的朱

踐耳、陳怡、郭文景,都以不同地區少數民族為題材去創作音樂,而這

些題材又同時展現於不同風格和類型的作品中。這些作品揉合中、西形

式,從小提琴和鋼琴到古箏和笛子;從交響樂到大型中樂合奏;從浪漫

主義手法到現代前衛風格,少數民族的音樂和文化,給作曲家帶來了源

源不絕的啟發。

新一輯的「樂在神州」,嘗試由新的角度讓大家認識少數民族的音樂和

文化。在介紹現代創作的同時,我會為大家帶來原始和正宗的少數民

族音樂片段,例如台灣高山族、苗族、瑤族、壯族、彝族、土家族、藏

族、維吾爾族等等。這是一種「原生態音樂」與「現代創作」的對話,

我亦希望通過這種互相對比的形式,讓聽眾對少數民族的音樂,有一個

更全面的瞭解。今日,為迎合現代媒體娛樂和旅遊發展的需要,不少原

生態音樂正面臨自我改造和被改造的命運。這次原型與創作的對話,正

好讓我們重新認識少數民族音樂的面貌。

In our upcoming new series of Music from China (in Cantonese), Chris Pak will introduce the music of the ethnic minorities from a different perspective. He hopes that this audio dialogue between the authentic music of the ethnic minorities and what it has inspired in modern music will give listeners a more dynamic understanding of the ethnic minorities and the world of Chinese music. 自言聽黑膠碟長大,從搖滾樂、披頭四(Beatles)開始,隨後接觸爵士樂。數十年的演奏生涯,曾與多位國際知名樂手合作,如Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tynor, Bobby McFerrin 等 ⋯⋯,亦獲邀參與格拉斯哥、北京、富士山及倫敦爵士藝術節,剛在今年3月初出席了爪哇爵士藝術節,更會到世界第三大島 - 加里曼丹島(婆羅洲)於沙灘上演出。期待能與更多別具才華的樂手合作,「‘Jam’出更多『靚』音樂。」

在公共衞生學院研究助理�授的身份背後,是唱作人兼唱片監製。「要知道音樂背後的精神及歷史⋯⋯」爵士歌手鍾一諾汲取前人的技巧,不必想太多即可隨「感覺」演繹,成功找出自己的風格。於急速的生活節奏中,最愛駕車時聽Nat King Cole,覺得「慢板情歌 (Jazz Ballad) 的搖擺 (swing)、起拍 (upbeat)、速度 (tempo) 好好 ‘Feel’」,同時讓情緒、心靈可以暫且休息。正與哥哥鍾一匡合作寫新歌,把人生哲理寄予歌曲中。

專欄作家,喜愛閱讀和聽音樂,音樂品味從歐西流行樂、古典至 ‘Fusion’ (爵士與搖滾的融合),按生活時序、隨心情細味各類型樂曲,家中爵士樂唱片比例佔六成。因歷史僻好愛尋根,由早期有爵士樂錄音開始聽 ‘Dixieland’ (白人樂手演奏紐奧爾良爵士樂),經過篩選不同時期及風格後,原來「當代爵士」(Contemporary Jazz) 是他的「最愛」。

為什麼鋼琴以外的樂器甚少單獨亮相?

就以小提琴為例,它是旋律樂器,基本上同一時間只能奏單

音。所以,它要有鋼琴、豎琴或結他伴奏,提供和聲、豐富

音色;在激昂或悲傷的情節,伴奏又可「加鹽加醋」、增強感

情效果。所以,小提琴家單人匹馬上陣,就如同少了掩護的戰

士,必須步步為營,又要盡情發揮,方能傲視全場。對管樂演

奏者來說,吹到「斷氣」之際,遇到伴奏獨挑大樑的過渡段,

更是如逢甘露。

本身演奏技藝高超的作曲家如拜伯 (Heinrich Biber) 就有膽量

向高難度挑戰。在巴赫寫出複雜華麗的無伴奏樂章《夏康舞

曲》(出自D小調第二組曲)之前,拜伯已經創作了結構幾乎同

樣大型的G小調《帕薩加利亞舞曲》。作品建基於四個下行音

符 (G、F、降E及D) 組成的頑固低音。這低音以上的旋律不斷

變奏,小提琴要同時奏兩個、甚至三個音,又要照顧快速的琶

音、高把位等。若不是一心多用者,恐怕早就擲弓而去。

超技小提琴家不但能奏多線條、對位風格音樂,更能撇下鋼琴

家,自己包攬伴奏部份。1844年,約甘 (Joseph Joachim) 的

同門師兄安斯特 (Heinrich Ernst) 在倫敦的音樂會上,拉奏了自

己改編的《魔王隨想曲》,讓英國樂迷拍案叫絕。安斯特僅用

一把小提琴同時分飾四個角色 ─ 在高音驚叫的小孩、用泛音迷

惑人的魔王、低沉而故作鎮定的父親和處於中音域的敍事者 ─

再加上馬不停蹄的三連音作背景。誰說小提琴不能像鋼琴一樣

「自給自足」?

此外,克賴斯勒 (Fritz Kreisler)所寫的《宣敍調及諧謔隨想

曲》和巴格尼尼的《心如止水變奏曲》都是音色多變、目不暇

給的精彩作品,其他樂器如大提琴、長笛和雙簧管亦有不少獨

奏作品。4月份的「情有獨鍾」節目會為你一一送上。

進場就座時,台上空空如也。你會覺得不對勁嗎?如果是鋼琴演奏會,台上怎會沒有鋼琴?如果是其他樂器的表演, 則九成需要動用鋼琴。餘下的一成機會,大概是小提琴或大提琴家演出巴赫的無伴奏作品,又或是巴格尼尼的隨想曲吧!

In this concer t, Lio Kuok-wai per forms Mozar t’s Piano Concer to No. 22 in E flat major, K. 482. The Principal Resident Conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra, Li Xincao, leads the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in the Over ture to Mozar t’s The Magic Flute and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor. During my time with Radio 4 I have been fortunate enough to have interviewed many of the world’s leading classical musicians. A related task – and one that I have always found a bit daunting - has been to moderate discussions and debates. This can be tricky. It requires a lot of concentration and sensitivity, and you have to be quite skilful in the way you handle people.

I remember when Richard Tsang, one of Radio 4’s most inspirational heads, returned from the UK to take up the job for the second time in 1999. He got me to host a new and very ambitious programme / public event called Arts Forum. The first of these was a discussion on arts infrastructure in Hong Kong and the wider Pearl River Estuary. My panel of guests was quite distinguished (I remember, for example, the developer, Gordon Wu), and another was participating by phone from Los Angeles. I had to provoke and probe and stimulate discussion, manage the personalities and also the time, so as to give each participant a decent share of airtime, and deal with the technical side of things as well. It was a wonderful but terrifying learning experience. The series (one debate every month) helped me develop skills that made similar events subsequently feel easier – and there have been many.

Highlights on Radio 4 include an unforgettable session introducing Simon Rattle and principals of the Berlin Philharmonic to the Hong Kong press and public. Another Radio 4 highlight has, of course, been the ‘Intimacy of Creativity’ project initiated by the acclaimed composer Bright Sheng. I have enjoyed hosting the so-called ‘Meet-the-Artist’ sessions which take place in our studios, and which involve a rare and close collaboration between

從此,我對各樣的清談節目也漸漸得心應

手,最難忘是為柏林愛樂樂團的指揮力圖及

其首席主持記者招待會。去年,在盛宗亮創

辦的「創意間的親暱」參與「創意對談工作

坊」,與格林美得獎小提琴家奧康那的對話

交流,亦是很值得回味。

今年,我會再與作曲家盛宗亮、格林美得獎

低音大提琴家艾加‧美亞,以及小提琴家林昭
