Why do you think the rainforest supports so many different species?

Investigate many of the different animals found in the Asian Rainforest. Score out the animals in the spiral that you can find in this gallery. Not all of the animals are found in the rainforest, so explore carefully!

tropical rainforest We have made these explorer notebooks to help you discover more about Our Dynamic Earth. These symbols can help you and you will see them throughout your notebook. This page tells you what they mean.

This tells you that you need to listen carefully

This tells you when you need to look carefully

This tells you that you need to write something down

This tells you when you need to discuss something with a friend or in a group

4DVENTURE

Choose a biome that you would like to live in and think about what changes you would have to make to live in that environment.

Have a look at the Arctic information board. Here you will see information on the polar bear, the artic fox, the ringed seal and the walrus. They have all adapted to living in the cold Arctic conditions.

As you journey through our galleries you may come across things that you do not understand or things you would like to know more about. Write your questions in the space below and then post them to our education team to answer. The hardest questions will be picked each month to challenge our team. Leave your question in the box at our ticket desk or go to www.dynamicearth.co.uk/kids/postaquestion

polar extremes

The polar regions may look similar but in fact they are very different. Below is a map of the world, we want you to join up the descriptions with the polar region they match. The first one has been done for you.

Why would a polar bear never eat a penguin?

This area is called the Arctic

Chinstrap penguins are found at this pole

Albatross are found here Ice at this pole can be up to 4km thick all year round

This area is called the Antarctic

This is a frozen continent

The only humans living here are scientists

Polar bears are found here

Humans have lived here for centuries This pole is made of

ice floating on the ocean

The polar regions are natural laboratories for studying climate change. Some scientists explore the-se freezing places for their job! They help us understand our changing cli-mate. Become a polar explorer and discover the unique environments of the Arctic and Antarctic.

Gallery 1: state of the earth

Working together in teams, you will be given a team number 1, 2 or 3. Write notes on your discoveries on the next page.

Earth Fact: The moon experiences ‘earthquakes’. We call them moonquakes! However they are less frequent and are not as powerful as the ones we get here on Earth. They seem to be caused by a gravitational tug of war between the Moon, Earth and Sun.

All team 1’s – You are going to investigate earthquakes! Can you find the seismic monitoring system in this gallery? Jump on the floor to create seismic waves. Imagine you are in your bed, an earthquake strikes! How do you feel? Describe what happens around you. Jot down your notes on the opposite page.

All team 2’s – You are going to investigate volcanoes! Can you find the video showing a volcanic eruption? Imagine you live in a town next to an active volcano. Discuss in your team the effects you think a volcanic eruption may have on your town and jot down your thoughts on the page opposite.

All team 3’s – You are going to investigate hurricanes! Can you find the video showing footage of a hurricane? Imagine you are in your classroom and a hurricane hits. Discuss in your team the effects you think a hurricane would have on your class. How would you feel? Jot down your feelings on the page opposite

oceans

An Oceanographer is a scientist who investigates many different things in and about the oceans. Uncover some of the different features hiding beneath the waves! You can now label the diagram below.

Can you find me in this gallery? What did I help scientists understand?

casualties and survivors

A palaeontologist is a scientist who looks at the history of life on our planet by investigating fossils. Become a palaeontologist while you roam through this gallery. Investigate the fossils and pick your favourite two. Write down your observations on the identity cards below.
