  • 1. Choosing the right type of website for your needs Jane Walker Walker Websites Web Design, East London

2. What is a basic (static) website? - basic websites are written using code called 'HTML' - in order to edit this type of website you need to install a program called a web page editor, such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver 3. Example of a basic HTML website 4. Another HTML website 5. Benefits of an HTML website - Web developers usually charge less to develop an HTML website - In addition, hosting can be cheaper (or free) as less disk space will be needed to store the website files 6. The alternative - CMS (Dynamic) websites - examples of a Content Management System (CMS) are WordPress, Joomla and Drupal - anyone can make updates online without needing knowledge of HTML or installing any website software - webpages are generated on-the-fly ('dynamically') from information stored separately. 7. Example of a CMS website 8. Another CMS website 9. Dynamic website benefits - it is fairly simple to make your own changes - it is easier to add features such as a search box in the future - it is not easy to accidentally change the layout (which can happen if you edit it from a web page editor) 10. Examples of easy to add features 11. Which to choose? Not everyone needs a dynamic website For example, if you only plan to update the information on your website three times a year, it may not be worth investing the extra money in making the website dynamic 12. Website running costs Whichever option you choose, you will still need to pay for: - web hosting - re registration of your domain name - maintenance costs if something goes wrong with your site Domain name registration costs are hard to avoid, but low (around 10 per year) 13. Web hosting costs Personal websites - Web hosting can be free but this will typically offer smaller web space and limited features - great if all you need is a blog that your friends and family will read SMEs - Smaller businesses often choose a basic web hosting option for around 30-70 per year Large companies firms with a big web presence tend to pay a lot for web hosting to allow for a lot of different pages, options and choices for their customers 14. Summary Your choice of what type of website will depend on the functionality you need, both now and in the future The cost of both web hosting and design will usually be higher with a CMS (dynamic) website 17.
