what is sublimation?

how does it work?

Step 1. – Print with suitable sublimation printer (in mirror image) and then trim the transfer.

Step 2. – Place & position transfer on coated mug & tape in position using Heat Tape.

Step 3. – Using mug press apply required time (140 secs), heat (190ºC) and normal pressure.

Step 4. – Remove from press and peel transfer immediately for outstanding results.

Step 5. – Submerge in water to complete the process, package in relevant mug box.

The following example shows the sublimation process to print an Orca coated ceramic mug, using the Studio Mug press.

Sublimation as a production technique is relatively simple, it’s the chemical process which separates it from any other form of digital printing. When sublimation inks are heated, they turn into a gas and dye polyester fabric or items that have a polyester coating. The result is a premium full-colour, photographic-quality image that will not crack, peel or wash away from the substrate. Sublimation dyes are not opaque and therefore the printable items need to be white or a pastel colour.

TheMagicTouch for the UK and Ireland are authorised distributors of sublimation inks from Sawgrass Technologies, world leaders in this unique process. These include cartridges and ink refills for bulk ink systems supported with the relevant ICC colour profiles for vivid colours.

Please note that the printing of 100% cotton and non-polyester coated items does not work with the sublimation transfer process. Please refer to TheMagicTouch toner-based image transfer process.

what do you need?

PrintersThe sublimation transfer process only works with selected inkjet printers that use a piezo-print-head technology. Over the years this has been exclusive to specific Epson printers, however the recent arrival of the new Ricoh SG3110 and GX7700 printers allows some choice and options for improved production capabilities.

Sublimation PaperSublimation paper is designed to absorb as much ink as possible to ensure strong and vivid colours. Using regular plain or inkjet paper will not work with this process. The papers are available in various standard sizes.

Sublimation InksTheMagicTouch supply original sublimation inks from Sawgrass Technologies which are used, tried and tested by thousands of users worldwide, delivering reliable and cost effective printing. Sublimation inks are unlike regular inks as they are dyes rather than inks.

Colour profiles are also available to ensure consistent colour management. Inks can be supplied as refills for bulk ink systems or cartridge format using the new generation of Epson and Ricoh models.

Heat PressesTo ensure safe and consistent production of sublimation items we recommend using professional and reliable equipment. All swing-head presses which cover 90% of the applications are supplied with a lifetime guarantee on the heat platen itself. The presses need to attain and maintain constant 190-200ºC temperature with adjustable pressure settings. Other available presses are for mug production and the decoration of caps and hats. All presses supplied come with a one year warranty.

Printable Sublimation ItemsTheMagicTouch offer a range of blank printable products. Whilst the process is possible on many items we suggest that being focused on items that are “easy to market” and “profitable” ensures good steady business growth and strong repeat orders.

Please note:All printables need either a polyester coating on hard surfaces such as metal, tiles, coasters etc or at least 50% polyester fibre content with fabrics such as T-shirts, polo’s, mousepads etc.

SoftwareDesign and graphic software packages such as Corel Draw and Adobe Photoshop that support ICC colour profiles are perfect for sublimation and are widely available.

Training & SupportTheMagicTouch offers training in many aspects of the image transfer business, these are held at our training facility in Dunstable and are free for existing clients to attend.

This year has also seen the introduction of on-line support where issues and queries are solved instantly “live” on your PC by our in-house technical support team.

When sublimating products you will need to take into account variables such as: thickness, texture, size and colour. Print your images approx 5-10mm larger than the size of the substrate you are transferring to, this allows a margin of error when aligning everything under the heat press.

Pressing times depend on the colour intensity and size of each artwork. Please note that the listed information is based on performed tests with equipment supplied by TheMagicTouch.

1 Non Account Customers - Strictly payment with order or on collection of goods.

2 Account Customers - Strictly 30 days from date of invoice.

3 All equipment (printers, presses, plotters) are sold strictly as payment in advance to both account and non-account customers.

4 Credit Accounts will automatically be placed on hold where invoices are overdue for payment or credit limit is exceeded.

5 Returned or represented cheques will be charged at £20.00 per representation.

6 All goods are subject to availability.

7 No returns are accepted after 1 month from date of despatch, or if printed/processed in any way.

8 Any shortages or non-delivery must be notified to us within 24 hours of expected date of receipt.

9 Ownership of all goods remain the property of TheMagicTouch (GB) Ltd® until all invoices are paid in full.

10 Cheques for orders will have to be cleared before goods released. If your order is urgent there will be an additional charge of £15.00 to obtain special clearance on your cheque.

11 Prices do not include carriage which will be charged where goods are not collected.

12 Prices do not include VAT, which will be charged at the standard rate where applicable.

13 Prices for cases/dozens are per size.

All redelivery charges as a result of non-attendance are chargeable.

Every endeavour will be made to despatch goods ordered before 5.00pm on the same day.

15 Perfect returns must be authorised by our returns department and with a confirmed returns reference code. We are under no obligation to accept the return of perfect garments. All perfect returns will be subject to a minimum 10% handling charge.

16 In the event of a dispute which cannot be resolved without recourse to law, the appropriate jurisdiction will be that of England & Wales.

17 We understand and will exercise our statutory right to claim interest and compensation for debt recovery costs under the late payment legislation if we are not paid according to our credit terms. Interest of 3% above Barclays Bank base rate and third party collection costs are payable on defaulting accounts.
