  • ^ D _ x _ S i :

Let's see - whsrs were we? Oh yes - on our vjay to dinner, linagine Lefty forgettingBuch £in importiint itar. as din»ierl

TlB first car, driven by Dick, pulled in front of the restaurant in Ford City, andfor at least 5 miriutefl, it was the onlj* ana of the iiiotorcade to arrive^- What (tolledthe others is still a mystery, hut we thii^ -"^oe Pelletier had something to ^do with it.

This Buick actually helonsed to Tom, Dick's eldest heir, hat when it ran out of gas, fffipnV! transferred to pappa's station wagon. "Better fill ier up," suggested Tan,

At last all had arrived, and v/e entered t.ve restaurant, and found a large, spaciousroom, v/ith the tables placdd in a squared "U" p.ittern. To one side was a juke box,and Lefty dedicated a number to Charlie Conlej', "On Top of Old Sitokey."

Everyone seated himself at tible, and inr ^Aiately. began to appreciate the preaonco ofHarry Gordon, who bro!^ out some- iMar^ Wine for an appetizer.

Lucky we didn't all '.vind up in the local clink. There is a Pennsylvania Blue Lawforbidding the sale of li(iuor on Sunders, ?,'ell, we didn't actual^ pay. for it, sowe were evidently covered by this technicality. •

    The desert finished, Board Chairman Len ICruse arose and acted as Ijaster of Ceremonies,V 7 e w i s h t o s a l u t e o u r S o r e d C l i a i r a a n .

Several DXers made imprort^tu speeches. It becatie imr-ediately evident that no one hadrecently studied Public Speaking; yet all drew appl.ause,

Len called on Pat Reillay as out-going chairman. Pat stated that Harry Gordon was01© of the original foimders of NEC. TTig' put the blame on hini, Pat?

Dick then spolre and said hov; h?-pi^* ts was to see us all, but.we'll bet he was evenhappier when we finally went home.

Lefty then ad^dttad hov; the "Verie Si.raers" column carr.a into being. Seems he waslooking through endless "DX Ke'.vses" one day for a signer and decided if tlsy werelisted each week, it'd be an avfully lot easier to find them!

Sob Collins -oops- Gorsuch then spoke about his conteet. Ho offered the prizes himself, but it was still decided to charge a 25^ entry fee to he|p him defray the costof said prizes. We voted for the contest, ar.d also \'oted a vote of thaiika to Bob,

It was decided also to have a DX Special contest, sejerate from Bob's. A more uncom-fort-ble silence was never felt until Len asked for a Holunteer to mafeage the contasf

As all craned tbeir necks looking for a volunteer, slowly arose Carroll Seth, beardand all - The ;.ian T/ho Came to Dinner, personified!

He turned around, and slowly and dramatically s.^id, "I vol-onteer!" We had to giveSully another glass of wine here to' ke^:p him from fainting.

Len Kruse "reined" over the .proceedings, but Hal V^agner want him one better. He"hailed" the wonderful co-operation in ^.^3 IIEC, "Sno'.i" club like the N£C, he said.

Next was Joe Pelletier who pointed out it was getting late, ard su^ested we adjournto Dick's, where we wouli then tape-record the interviews for the coming WACB DX sho^vIt was a good idea. After all, all the food was gone ty then. The wir^, too.

    On the way back, Lefty almcsf.fell out of Dick's car trying to point out WACB'a ant e n n a t o w e r t o t h o s e i n t h e n e x t c a r .

Everyone arrived back at Dick's - safe, sound - and heavier.

  • np_7i_ J3 j ^ J L C "Jo9 Pelletier aow iooked up tie recording eqiiipnsnt, while everyow suddenly beganto groviT nsrvoue.

Who would conduct the interviews? Aryhody *ith e-^rience? Vfell, Bo^ Gorsuch wasmore such, so he "became by unanliEous choice, the emcee.

    You've heard of Bon McNeill and his Breakfast Club. ^Phis is Bob Gorsuch, awi hisB e f o r e - B r e a k S a s t C l u b .

Hal VTagner, that old goat-herder, nor.' bec-itie the guinea pig - he was chosen to opentia show, being quizzed Bob.

    The show was done with Bob sitting on a c?mp c:»ir, with a hand miJce, and tto interviewee seated in a lar^, comfortable morris chair. lai didn't seen to be too comf o r t a b l e - b u t H o r r i a d i d n ' t c « r. p l r. i n .

The interviews were done, two at a clip - then a pause, v/here misic will be rung inat the "WACS studio. When Hal was finished, Lefly was next. Hal had to slip out ofthe chair quickly. He slipped all right, but Lefty slipped behind him into position. Here Lefty gave a long spiel, which turned out to be notfains but a cocmsTCial fortl"-fi Uation&l Radio Club.

Some meirbars watched the interviews - some sat out on the porch, unconcerned. BobSpencer sat on top of Dick's TV set. S3®b he wanted to be on Television.Len Kruse was the Pro^tioi Director. He swooned each to cone to the mike, and nearly wore out his finger pressing it to his lips for quiet.B41i>Jiie said that Pop Edge was there in spirit. VJe tl'.ou'sht he had died, the wayRalph put it. Speak to us, Eay«

While Bob was interviewing Howie Kemp, Ralph stood to or» side, pointing one fingerat the mike like a gun, and preteaided to fire dt. "That was for Gene Francis' Ralphexplained - but no-t on mike. He doesn't want to be sued.Ralph has In'adiitlon for Gehe'to his "What the Call Î itters Mean" column in "DX NewtWACB - "We Are Crazy Broadcasters'."

Speaking of Gene, came to the Convention by recording, carried by Lefty. Thiswill also be played on the December 9 WACB DX show.

Bob stood up to intervlov/ the i-̂ iies - IJrs. Tjuse, i.irs. Palletier - and - Mrs. Gor-suchl "First time I. ever asked tie Questions!" he said later.

Host'nsrvoUs'of all was Carroll. We don't know if he had mike frî t, or whether hefeared for ilis beard he had reared, and endeared.

Carroll was saved for the end of the intervieiF;s of the visiting DXera. "Figure everybody will l»ve tuned out by then," explained Bob.The interviews closed vtith the home-town boys Dick and Joe, If you don't hear a•fluff in Dick's interviev/, then you'll know he re-recorded it later.

Don Kaekey told about his 1,000 veries in a year. "Verie good, Don'."Pat Eeilley mentioned a figure during his spot. We thought he was talking aboutthe number of light years to Jupiter, but instead, it was his verie-total.We don't like to be informers, but it is our vinderstanding that Joe Pellstier hasthis DX program already verified!
