CALL FOR PAPERS In conjunction with its spring exhibition of the work of Charles Simonds, the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University announces a call for papers for a symposium to take place on Saturday, April 2, 2016. Dwellings: Charles Simonds and 1970s New York will use Simonds’s work and its original context in downtown New York as a point of depar- ture for addressing alternate histories and metho- dologies in the study of the art of the recent past. As the 1970s crystallizes into a historical period, certain episodes are privileged while others fail to be written into art history. This symposium will reinstate a key figure as it seeks to offer new narra- tives in the history of art. Proposals are sought from academics, professio- nals, and students alike. Interdisciplinary papers and those from related fields (i.e. literature, anth- ropology, and history) are very welcome. Topics may relate broadly to a variety of aspects of Simonds’s work from the 1970s to today, as well as the reception and study of it, and may include: ∙ The work of Charles Simonds and his peers ∙ Historicization and canonization in art history ∙ Exhibition history and art historiography ∙ Socially engaged practice ∙ The legacy of Minimalism and Post-Minimalism ∙ Representation and narrative ∙ Craft and the artist’s hand ∙ Architecture and urbanism ∙ Anthropology as artist’s material ∙ Feminism and gender ∙ Land art, geology, and topography ∙ Notions of time ∙ Myth and myth-making, religion, and sacred spaces. Applicants are asked to submit a CV and an abstract of 500 words to simondssymposium@ gmail.com. Submissions are due December 15, 2015. Dwellings: Charles Simonds and 1970s New York
