DVB Broadcast Channels

There are number of broadcast channels:– DVB-S : Satellite

– DVB-T : Terrestrial

– DVB-C : Cable

Traditionally the use have been video broadcasting In the future also data Economical and massive bandwidth pipe for

citizen’s Internet access

DVB-x standards

DVB-S– Satellite service and on-going

– Video and data (uni-directionality)

DVB-C– Cable service, on-going

– Video and Internet access (bi-directionality)

DVB-T– Terrestrial service , analog switch off

– Broadcast video (regulatory issues)

DVB used in the world

DVB-S

Mature broadcast video service via satellite Bit rate varies max 40 Mbps Continental scope Internet access and data services Requires out-of-band return channel

DVB-x © Mika Grundström 04/19/23 10

DVB-C

Developing broadcast video service Big potential in Internet access offering Bit rates about 34 Mbps Requires network update in many cases

DVB-x © Mika Grundström 04/19/23 11

DVB-T

Trial phase, three transmitters Bandwidth capacity 20-32 Mbps Mobile reception possible Unidirectional Data services limited (regulations)

MPEG over DVB

Traditionally MPEG-2 TS over DVB-x Broadcast service Other services - MPEG-2 TS is framing How about Video over IP over MPEG-2 TS over

DVB-x? Multiplexing dilemma

Packetisation

MPEG over DVB

Problem with the service provider Duplicated service infrastructure Content management problem Service Information (SI) needed

– User and Program information

– Automatic tuning to TS

DVB Multimedia Home Platform (Java based)– Service creation

Data Broadcasting DVB defined encapsulation Multiprotocol encapsulation over MPEG-2 TS Does not define a complete system model Network operator has an option with the use of different

technologies Linking the Internet (bi-directional) and broadcast

(unidirectional) channels is a challenge– routing issues– TCP acknowledgements– HTTP and other protocol support

Protocol issues Service Announcement Protocol

– Simple protocol for informing of multicast sessions

Service Description Protocol– Describes multimedia session properties

Uni-directional Link Routing– Routing over broadcast links

– Currently not applicable

Unidirectional Hyper Text Transfer Protocol– Robust protocol to transfer HTTP

– retransmissions and error correction

Conclusions

DVB Broadcast channels are cost-effective way providing Fast Internet Access

Content packaging is in key role Mobile reception using DVB-T increases the

number of users and possible applications Technical solutions exist Maturity to be achieved Large scale deployment can be started today
