Wooden Boat Show Features Boat Building for EveryoneOn Aug. 16-17, the Port of Toledo

will present its 10th annual Wooden Boat Show, which celebrates the his-toric traditions of wooden boats and recreation along the Yaquina River.

Wooden boats from throughout the Northwest are on display at the Port of Toledo’s Waterfront Park and Marina. The show offers a variety of free activities, including maritime-

related informational booths and kids’ games, as well as boat-building activity to observe and live music.

The show also features local arts and crafts vendors, delicious food offerings and a silent auction.

necessarily long-term durability, Georgia Pacific is again sponsoring the Containerboard Boat Contest.

This exciting event allows teams or individuals to test their best designs against other community containerboard boat builders.

A starter kit of containerboard is provided by Georgia-Pacific, with no limit to the amount of additional cardboard used.

See the Port of Toledo’s website for rules or email [email protected].

And as always, the Kids Boat Building activity is free and will be well-stocked and ready for the little ones. Kids are provided with wood hulls and an array of recycled and craft materials to build their very own model-size wooden boat masterpiece.

This activity is graciously sup-ported through volunteers from the Four Square Church and is always a hit.

The Port of Toledo greatly appre-ciates the support of our major spon-sors as well as the numerous indi-viduals, businesses and groups that have donated time, goods and ser-vices to this free community event. Thank you – Georgia-Pacific, Oregon Coast Bank, Dahl Disposal Service, Toledo Rotary Club, CoastCom Inc., Fishpeople Seafood and Pacific Mari-time & Heritage Center.

Free Resource for Oregonians Who Have Insurance ProblemsMany people don’t realize there

is a state resource that can help when they are faced with a denied claim, a confusing policy or uncer-tainty about coverage choices.

The Oregon Insurance Division has recently launched an awareness campaign to make sure Oregonians know they have a team of experi-enced consumer advocates avail-able to help with problems related to health, auto, life or other types of insurance.

Advocates help explain com-plex policies, resolve miscommuni-cations with insurance companies and in cases where there has been a mistake, work toward a resolu-tion. Last year, advocates helped cli-ents reclaim more than $1 million in unpaid benefits.

The Insurance Division also can assist on the front end, when you’re buying insurance, to help you avoid common mistakes.

These services can be a big help to you, your friends and families, so

visit online at insurance.oregon.gov or call an advocate at 888-877-4894 if you have any questions.

The service is free, confidential and available Monday through Fri-day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oregon Coast Aquarium Bites into Shark Week Myths with Facts, FunNEWPORT, Ore. – Shark Week cel-

ebrations at the Oregon Coast Aquar-ium are markedly different from the better-known television event.

The myth of a living modern mega-lodon and disproportionate represen-tation of sharks biting humans will be noticeably absent. The facts presented, however, will be no less thrilling.

The aquarium’s Shark Conserva-tion Weekend will separate fact from fiction to unveil these fascinating predators on Aug. 9-10.

The aquarium will set a stage to promote understanding of these key-stone predators with SCUBA diver presentations in the shark-infested Open Sea exhibit and the education program, The Flying Great White Sharks of South Africa, with Aquar-ium Science Program Director Chris Spaulding from Oregon Coast Com-munity College.

The aquarium’s staff artist, Michael Cole, will work on a painting of a tiger shark while he chats with guests. Free posters of Cole’s Sharks of Oregon painting will be available for visitors to take home; supplies are limited.

Activities for visitors of all ages will circle throughout the aquarium to promote an understanding of sharks.

Kids under age 10 can learn through play about the unique adap-tations of Oregon shark species in The Sea & Me exhibit and during the morn-ing Shark Shenanigans education pro-gram – complete with a life-sized rep-resentation of a great white shark.

Shark enthusiasts who cannot get enough of these incredible animals during regular aquarium hours can doze off just inches from mighty seven-gill, leopard, soupfin and other sharks

during a shark-themed sleepover pro-gram on Aug. 9-10. Space is limited and reservations must be made at least one week in advance.

Shark Conservation Weekend activities, with the exception of sleepovers, are included with aquar-ium admission and will take place from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. For a schedule of events and more information, visit aquarium.org or call 541-867-FISH.

Those unable to visit the aquar-ium can still bite into Shark Conser-vation Weekend on the Oceanscape Network, which will feature a flurry of articles, videos and downloadable guides about Oregon’s sharks.
