We need your help!
Many of you appear to be having trips around Australia, overseas or just
down the road and may come across some exceptional places. We would
like to hear about them along with any highlights of your trip. Please email
your experiences to the Secretary so they can be shown in the Duty Freed.
Pictures are not always easy to insert but we will try. Alternatively we may
be able to place them on our website.
Also as you can see we do not have a gossip column so if you have any news
of members please let us know. Unfortunately the only news we seem to get
is when one of our members has passed away and advise our members by
email due to the timeframe.

Hello, my name is Phil Schmidt, the only child of Roger and Kay Schmidt, of Safety Bay, Western
Australia. It is with much sadness that I am informing you of the passing of both Mum and Dad.
Kay:
Last Sunday, 3rd August 2014, Mum lost a battle with cancer. Mum only discovered that she had
the disease 38 days prior. As you can imagine it was a shock for all of us. Dad, Gail (my partner)
and I travelled very closely with Mum on her journey. Due to the initial discovery of secondary/
metastasised stage IV tumours located in multiple organs, the outlook was grim. Unfortunately
typical medical treatments were not really an option after initially trying to investigate the
primary source, as the disease was so aggressive and Mum got so sick. We comforted Mum as
best we could. I would like to thank all the staff at Rockingham General Hospital, who cared for
Mum in her last two weeks. Mum passed away at approx. 11.30pm with Dad, Gail and myself
present.
Roger:
Dad was a rock for Mum (and us) during her 38 day journey. He must have been absolutely
shattered internally. After Mums passing on the Sunday night, he very quickly left the hospital to
head home whilst we stayed and took care of the formal details - we all had little sleep in the
days before. We had arranged to meet the following day at Mum and Dads to commence the
funeral arrangements. Overnight, Dad left us to be with mum. I found Dad had passed away at
approx. 9.00am, Monday 4th August 2014, laying peacefully in his bed. Due to Mums condition,
there was a large amount of morphine based medication at home.
There was no pain for either of them, both going in a similar way.
It was quite obvious due to the contents of a note left and the placement of several items within
Mum and Dads home, and also (with hindsight) several of the conversations had with Mum and
Dad in the prior weeks about after-death arrangements, that Dads decision was well planned and
not on the spur of the moment. Perhaps Mum was involved also?
Simply, Dad could not live without Mum and they are now both together.
The Owl and the Pussycat will still be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next year,
together.
A cremation service will be held at Fremantle Cemetery’s West Chapel for both of them on
Tuesday 19th August, 2014 at 11.00am. Could attendees please gather at the main entrance prior
to this.
Afterwards, a celebration of Mum and Dads life will be held from 2.00pm onwards at the Safety
Bay Yacht Club, Safety Bay Road, Safety Bay.
I look forward to meeting with you all at the service.
Thank you.
Rest In Peace Mum & Dad.
Phil Schmidt

Last but not Least
Paul Fitzgerald contacted me a couple of days ago, to advise that he had accidently discovered that the Edwin Abbott is for sale down at Mandurah and it looks in pretty good nick for 33 years old! Only $59,000. Cut and paste or type this link into Google to have a look;- http://www.yachtswest.com.au/yachtswest/boats-for-sale/used/power-boats/randell-42-ex-cray-houseboat/155797
By the time you read this I will be off on another 2 x week 4x4 adventure up to Giles Breakaway (near Laverton) and back. Travelling with me will be Walter Hill, Steve Smallwood, Kim Norrie, Mark Skeels, JR (& wife), and possibly Phillip Gausdon. (No, not all in the same vehicle ) We will be camping at Roly Dixon’s farm on the way home if all goes to plan. How’s that for a bunch of ex– Customs Officers (except Kim he still is), talk about keeping it in the ‘family’. Over the years it seems that Customs management have tried to take the ‘family’ out of Customs. Well we prove that (in our case at least) it is going to
stay for a very long time. Bernie Webb
