Discover the uses of such plants as muira puama (potency wood), an ancient Mayan herb with a reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac, uña de gato (Cat’s claw) the inner bark of a vine used to stimulate the immune system, sangre de drago (Dragon’s blood), a tree sap used topically to heal wounds, or sarsaparilla (Smilax officinali) a plant with steroid components. Vision-inducing plants, such as tobacco and coca leaves, were used to achieve spiritual and corporeal transformations.

As an Hispanic actress and activist, she has been honored by many organizations, including the Association of Hispanic Arts, The Congressional Hispanic Caucus in Washington, D.C., The National Hispanic Media Coalition, and The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families. She was also presented with the Hispanic Heritage Award for Education.

Works included are Dance Visions of Picasso and Pluto’s Retreat, among others. An additional multicultural dance presentation of Brazilian Capoeira will be performed. Using video clips from several movies and television shows including “Armageddon,” “Deep Impact,” “Enterprise” and “The Simpsons,” he talks about Hollywood science (or the lack thereof). After earning his doctorate in astronomy at the University of Virginia, Dr. Plait became a NASA contractor at the Goddard Space Flight Center, working with the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Plait began a career in public outreach and education with his ‘Bad Astronomy’ website and blog, debunking bad science and popular misconceptions. BOWSER: “TWO DECADES ON (AND UNDER) ANTARCTIC ICE”JAMES AND BETTY HALL THEATREDr. Sam Bowser, noted polar biologist featured in Werner Herzog’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Encounters at the End of the World,” will discuss his experience conducting research in Antarctica since 1984. From humanity’s place in the environment above the ice, to the research in the living laboratory below it, he’ll talk about the beauty and the power he has experienced during his career diving under the ice. Dr. Bowser is a biologist and polar explorer who has spent many years studying Antarctic giant one-celled organisms and has contributed immensely to our knowledge of their biology, ecology and diversity.

WASHINGTON ART GALLERYWoody Pirtle’s graphic design work has been exhibited worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Neue Sammlung Museum in Munich, and the Zurich Poster Museum. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts, lectured extensively, is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and has served on the board of HOW magazine and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.Opening reception: November 17 at 5 p.m.

These vibrant young performers “live forever” in our hearts as they yearn for their big break. The show will be directed by Blair Wing with musical direction by Evan Chapman and choreography by Samantha Dahowski. There is general seating and the box office opens a half hour prior to each performance. General admission tickets: $10, $5 for senior citizens 65+ and students. DCC students are free.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 28 & 29, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.DCC FOUNDATION’S 38TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIREvery year new and unique items are presented by the crafters, and 2009 is sure to be just as exciting. We have invited some of your favorite artists back and some new ones as well. The fair features artists who hand-craft all of their own items, some of which are considered fine art. Many items can’t be found anywhere else. Admission: $6 for adults, $4 for students, senior citizens 55+, and DCC faculty, staff and alumni. Children under age 12 are free.
