In honor of the upcoming Black History Month: This is as far back as my family (on my mothers side) can be traced,so far. Mary Christian, my moms grandmothers grandmother, was born in 1808 and lived in Elberton, Georgia. Wereguessing that when the slaves were freed, she stayed with her white employers due to her advanced age. She musthave been active in her community, though. She founded St Marys CME Church in Elberton, which is still in operation.

In honor of the upcoming Black History Month: This is as farback as my family (on my fathers side) can be traced, so far.Walter Strickland, who was born in 1847 in Valdosta, Georgia,

was my dads grandfather on his mothers s ide. He moved to,and started his family in, Talladega, Alabama.

We dont have a photo of his father, but as far as we know,he was a Cuban named Walter Lpez.

Grandma Lizzie, Elizabeth Johnson Harris, was my granddads mom(on my mothers side). She lived in Augusta, Georgia and longed to

be a real writer. She used to send her poetry to newspapers upNorth for publication. My aunt donated her autobiography to Duke

University; its been digitized and can now be viewed online athttp://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/scriptorium/harris.

    North Carolina Central Universitys

School o Law is the latest school to be

elected to join the Association of Ameri-can Law Schools (AALS). The AALS is anonprot group that works to improvethe legal profession by improving legaleducation. The NCCU School of Law isthe third HBCU (Historically Black Col-

lege/University) to be voted in, joiningHoward and Southern universities. TheNCCU School of Law is also the fourth outof seven law schools in North Carolina to

join (the law schools ofDuke University,UNCChapel Hill, and Wake Forest Uni-

The NCCU School of Law has long beennoted for its emphasis on public serviceand its 12 clinical programs that encour-age law students, supervised by practic-

    Durham Police Captain Kevin Cates

    (District Three) reports that, although

overall crime numbers have decreased, the numbers of thefts from vehicles andhomes are still pretty high. Thieves aretaking advantage of the fact that manypeople are still leaving their car doors un-locked. Some folks feel that thieves wontbreak into their cars if they can see thatnothing of value is inside. Unfortunately, they dont realize that some of their neigh-bors are leaving GPS devices, purses, cellphones, and cameras in the cars. Thatcan translate to open season on all carsin the area if thieves suspect that every-

one in the neighborhood is equally care-less.

Some residents are also leaving thedoors to their houses unlocked as well.Remember, if youre working in the frontyard, lock the back door. And if youreworking in the back, then go ahead andlock the front door.

Theres a mentoring program calleHYPE (Hayti Youth or Progress and

Enrichment), which operates out of theWD Hill Recreation Center (1308 Fayetteville St). Program coordinator DougColeman described a real success storyA young teen was recommended tothe program by members of the community. His father wasnt in his life andhis mom was doing her own thing. Theyoung man hadnt been to school in 18months and was just out in the streets

hanging around. Naturally, he was noticed by local gangs and was being recruited by one and harrassed by anotherHe was headed for big trouble when itwas strongly recommended that he jointhe HYPE program.

At rst, he was disrespectful and challenged authority at every step. HYPEsadult male mentors were tough but fairthey soon saw that the young man hadno self-condence and had lost any belie

in himself a long time ago. They workedwith him and got a third party to help advocate for his reenrollment in school. Theyoung man was two years behind in somesubjects and three years behind in others. The mentors provided tutoring andarranged for free counseling to help theyoung man regain his self-esteem.

Mr Coleman, an educator, said that the

experience was like watching a owebloom. It took a little while, but theyoung man dug in his heels and started

putting in the work. Although expertshad stated that no child can move upmore than one grade level in a year, ouryoung man caught up with his peersand is now attending school at his grade

level. He told his mentors, You saved mylife. I was on my way straight to jail.

If you know of young men ages 11 to 16who need some redirection in their livescall Kasib Abdullah at 687-7070.
