A Bibliography of Oman 1900-1910
COMPILERS NOTE
Oman before July 1?70 was officially known as the Sultanate ofMuscat and Oman and until that date was little_known and difficultboth to enter and to eJl;plore. Since 1970 Omsn has increasinglybegun to emerge on the world scene as a result of internal social, economic and administrative reformist changes. Travel to andwithin the country is now much easier and research programmesassociated with development planning are prolifenlting. One suchprogramme, financed by Petroleum Development (Oman) Ltd., is beingconducted by a team from the University of Durham, directed byProfessor H.Bowen_Jones.
This bibliography, also compil~d as part of II joint projectwith the American University of Beirut dealing with the wholeArabian peninsula, is designed as a selective guide to recent workson Oman, produced between 1900 and the year of change 1970. Earliermaterial, particularly the accounts of travellers and diplomaticrepresentatives is, of course, of considerable vaiu," to the attainmentof an understanding of the forces which created the Oman of 1970.Since, h",.•ever, access to the original dDcuments is [requenllydiffieul t. and their relevence to conteln(lclrary development work isextremely varied they have been omitted from this collection; mostof the impl'rtant items are referred to in the books listed in thefirst sectiun of this bjblio~raphY_ Also omitted are specialisedreports unless they have bpen released and publ ishE'd. It i.8 hopedlater to produce addenda to this work. addenda which will containinformal I on about the mater ia Inn", exc luded.
The bibliography is divided into four m;"n sections _ G.-meral(including travel), the Physical Environ",ent, the I't>"ple, and EconomiCDevelopment. Each of these main sections has been divided into anumber of sub-sections but classification of some of the items isnecessarily somewhat arbitrary - for Instance a number of articleson locusts in the Soils and Biogeography sub-section might also beclassified under Clim~tology and Meterology.
There are also available a large number of books and articlesdealing with the Arabian Peninsula in general; works which sometimeshave reference to Oman. Such works have also been omitted from thebibliography as they are usually more pertinent to Saudi Arabia orthe Arab/Persian Gulf and will be included in future bibliographies onthose regions,
