DURAFUSEPRODUCT/DIMENSIONS GUIDE

The DuraFuse brand is offered by GPS, part of Aliaxis, the world’s largest manufacturer

and supplier of quality pipeline solutions. As global specialists in polyethylene (PE)

systems for the transportation of gas, water and industrial fluids, we have over 50 years

experience developing plastic fittings for low and medium pressure applications.

With a comprehensive choice of cost effective pipeline products and associated tooling,

conforming to the highest British, European and International standards, we can provide

you with reliable, total peace of mind solutions.

Benefits of PE

PE, unlike traditional materials, is able to offer a whole host of unique qualities that not

only save valuable time and money, but also ensure long-term reliability and efficiency.

These qualities include:

• Light-weight

Lighter fittings reduce health and safety risks and the need for large, expensive

installation and manoeuvring machinery.

• Non-corrodible

PE is a non-corrodible material that offers long-term reliability.

• 50 year life span

The 50-year life span of polyethylene provides overall life cost savings.

• Flexibility

The flexibility of PE permits coiling and has excellent surge resistance. This makes the

products ideal for trenchless installation and reduces the number of joints required.

• Smooth internal bore

This ensures efficient supply capacity is sustained.

• Excellent chemical resistance

• Fully end load bearing

No thrust blocks or anchors are required.

• Good insulator

This allows design flexibility in low temperature climates.

All of these features make the use of PE possible in areas where:

• Ground movement occurs, such as earthquake regions.

• Aggressive ground conditions are present – such as sharp objects and shingle.

The flexibility and longevity of PE allows for significant cost savings to be achieved

through reduced maintenance and operational costs.

DURAFUSE

Electrofusion

The DuraFuse electrofusion range contains a complete range ofelectrofusion fittings including couplers, reducers, tapping tees, branching saddles, elbows and tees. Available in metric sizes with4.7mm terminal pins the range is offered in PE100 black and blueand PE80 yellow. Most fittings are supplied for 39.5 volt operationbut some sizes are available for 80 volt operation. Electrofusionfittings are able to weld pipes of differing SDR.

The jointing of PE pipes through electrofusion offers a rapid, convenient method of joining pipes that can be installed usingtrenchless technologies. Electrofusion technology works on theprinciple of an electrical heating coil within the socket meltingmaterial within the fittings, which then causes the surface of thepipe to melt. When this molten material cools it establishes astrong weld between the fitting and the pipe.

The design of the DuraFuse fittings ensures optimum melt pressureas the electrical heating coils are precisely positioned duringmanufacturer to ensure:

• The heating coils are as close to the joint surface as possible.• Heat distribution is uniform.• Melt pressure and temperature are closely controlled.• The heating coils are protected from damage.

Heating coils within the fittings are energised through the use ofelectrofusion control units (ECUs), which are also offered as part ofthe DuraFuse range. ECUs are small portable units where the fusionparameters can be entered either manually or automatically. SomeECUs have the ability to read bar codes, which automatically entersthe fusion parameters. A bar code label along with the fusion andcooling times are displayed on all our electrofusion fittings.

DuraFuse electrofusion products are designed to work on a fixedfusion time for temperatures between -5ºC and +23ºC. If thefusion time is entered manually then temperature compensation isnot normally necessary. The bar code system will automaticallyadjust the fusion time by small amounts to compensate forvariations in ambient temperatures. Please contact us foradditional data relating to extremes of temperature.

DURAFUSE

Butt-fusion

The DuraFuse range contains, long spigot and pupped fittings alongwith accessories, which can be gripped for butt or electrofusion bymost types of machines/clamps.

These products are offered in PE100 black and blue and PE80yellow. The range includes reducers, elbows, tees, flanges, endcaps, backing rings and gaskets.

Butt-fusion involves simultaneously heating the ends of twosurfaces through the use of electrically heated plates until a meltstate is achieved. Under controlled pressure the two surfaces arebrought together for a specific fusion/cooling time.

The joint formed is fully resistant to end thrust and has identicalperformance under pressure as the pipe.

Butt-welding technology should only be used for the jointing ofmaterials with the same SDR value.

Product Marking

Where applicable, most of our fittings incorporate the followinginformation:

• Material • SDR• Nominal size • Unique number for internal traceability

Product Packaging

In addition to the product markings the following information isalso supplied on the product packaging:

• Fitting type• Application information (gas or water)• Certifying symbols and standards• System voltage (if applicable)• Pressure rating

Materials

DuraFuse products are available in in both PE80 and PE100. Thenumbers relate to the MRS (Minimum Required Strength) values ofthe material.

PE80 – This is the polyethylene material which has been widelyused for gas, water and industrial applications for many years. OurPE80 has a much higher long-term stress crack resistance thantraditional PE80.

PE100 – This is a higher performance polyethylene, which is ahigher density material than PE80 and demonstrates exceptionalresistance to rapid crack propagation and long term stress cracking.

The higher performance of PE100 allows thinner fitting walls thanPE80 for the same operating pressure and therefore uses lesspolymer.

Both PE materials are not recommended for continuous workingpressures above 60°C for liquids, including sewerage and industrialeffluents, or 30°C for gaseous fluids. PE100 has advantages overPE80 at low temperatures, since it is extremely crack resistantdown to -30°C. When considering applications which exceed thelimits stated above, please contact our Sales Department foradvice.

DuraFuse electrofusion fittings are easy to use and offer high

performance along with a rapid, convenient, method of joining

polyethylene pipes. Their design ensures optimum melt pressure as the

energising coils of wire are precisely positioned to ensure uniform

melting and to minimise the risk of accidental wire damage. Each fitting

displays a bar code label to enable automatic electrofusion control units

(ECUs) to scan the bar code in order to determine the fusion parameters.

DuraFuse fittings are offered in PE80 Yellow or PE100 Blue or Black and in

PE size up to 400mm with larger couplers up to 710mm progressively

available from 2007.

New quarter-turn ball valves are the latest addition to the DuraFuse

range, further extending the brand to provide a complete pipeline

total shut-off solution without compromise.

The valve operates to maintain and regulate high volume, high

pressure and high temperature fluids and is designed to allow the

valve to function without the complication of side loads. Suitable for

gas and water applications the products are manufactured from PE

and benefit from all the traditional characteristics of PE material i.e.

light-weight, robust and longevity. This ensures long-term cost savings

as a direct result of reduced maintenance and service time.

The SlimFlange range is a unique and patented steel reinforced PE

flange adaptor that allows size-for-size connection of a PE pipeline to

a metal flange without loss of nominal bore. The reinforcement hoop

buried in the flange face allows the backing ring bolt circle diameter to

be reduced by a nominal size, where backing rings of conventional PE

flanges are attached to the same PE pipe size. Considerable whole

system cost savings can be made as there is no need to upsize pumps

and valves connected to SlimFlange.

socket systems offered in other materials, Push-Fast resists the end

thrust generated by internal pressure, so anchors or thrust blocks

are not usually required. This product is offered in PE100 blue or

black and is rated up to 16 bar. This product should only be used

for water applications.
