Restrictions

herbicides Lexus® SX/Bullion®/Ductis™ SX/Exceed® SX/Staka™ SX 217

Lexus® SX must not be applied to any crop suffering from stress as a result of drought, water-logging, low temperature, pest or disease attack, nutrientdeficiency, soil compaction or other factors reducing crop growth.

Do not use Lexus® SX on crops undersown or to be undersown with grasses, clover or other legumes or any other broad-leaved crop.

Because some non-target crops are highly sensitive to Lexus® SX, avoid damageby drift onto broad-leaved plants outside the target area, or onto surface watersor ditches. Thorough cleansing of equipment is also very important – see separate section.

Do not apply within seven days of rolling the crop.

Please ensure that seed dressings are applied uniformly at the correct rate toensure that no phytotoxicity compromises the selectivity of the crop to any following pesticides, especially herbicides.

There are three distinct recommmendations for Lexus® SX, which will affect subsequent ALS herbicide choices:

1 – Pre-emergence Lexus® SX for Black-grass control in winter wheatIf using the pre-em Lexus® SX sequence for Black-grass control, Lexus® SX pre-em at 20 g/ha in tank-mix with residual herbicide may be followed by anapplication of Atlantis WG, Broadway Sunrise, Hatra, Horus, Othello or Pacifica.

No subsequent ALS-inhibiting herbicide may follow this sequence.

If Atlantis WG, Broadway Sunrise, Hatra, Horus, Othello or Pacifica are notapplied, please refer to the ALS sequence choices in example 3.

Restrictions (continued)

Only cereals, field beans, oilseed rape, red or white clover, or grass may be sown in the same calendar year as harvest of a cereal crop treated with just theDuPont registered sulfonylurea herbicide Lexus® SX. Ploughing is not a requirement when Lexus® SX is the only sulfonylurea herbicide used on this cereal crop. However, regardless of whatever previous chemical treatments havebeen applied to the field, in general establishing oilseed rape using subsoilingtechniques will always have an elevated degree of risk due to the lack of soilmovement and less seed to soil contact, so cultivation is recommended.

When additional ALS herbicides have been used in a programme either in tank-mix or sequence with Lexus® SX, it is essential to refer to the labels of thesepartner products for specific advice on cultivations prior to drilling the next cropas these may be more limiting and so should be adhered to.

Any crop may be sown in the following spring if just treated with Lexus® SX otherwise please refer to the following crops table.

Crop failure

In the event of crop failure for any reason, sow only winter wheat within one month orspring wheat within three months of application of Lexus® SX. Prior to resowing, soilshould be ploughed and cultivated to a depth of at least 15cm.

After three months, follow the recommendations in the ‘Following Crops’ section above.

General informationLexus® SX is a powerful herbicide with foliar and root activity against Black-grass and awide range of broad-leaved weeds. It is most effective when applied pre-emergence inwinter wheat and winter barley or to small, actively growing weeds. The time taken forsymptoms to appear and death to occur may vary between species. In some weed species, depending on weather conditions, symptoms may not be apparent for up to four weeks.

Lexus® SX has a moderate residual life in soil under normal conditions. The residual activity is reduced by high soil temperatures due to increased degradation of the activeingredient. Weed control may also be reduced when soil conditions are very dry.Nevertheless, with adequate soil moisture, susceptible weeds germinating soon after treatment will be controlled.

Recommendations for use

Crops/varieties and timing

Lexus® SX is recommended for use on all current varieties of winter wheat (not durum)and winter barley. Winter barley may be sprayed pre-emergence only. Winter wheat maybe sprayed pre- or post-emergence in the autumn to before 1st node detectable (GS31).Winter oats, winter rye and triticale may be sprayed from the 2 leaf stage (GS12) toDecember 31st.

Crop safety

Lexus® SX is very safe on all current varieties of winter wheat (not durum), winter barley, winter oats, winter rye and triticale.

Transient phytotoxic symptoms (yellowing, slight stunting) may appear under severe climatic conditions, including frost, and when significant variation occurs between day andnight temperatures. Experience shows that these symptoms disappear in a few days assoon as the physiology of the crop returns to normal and there is no effect on final yield.

When Lexus® SX is used pre-emergence, the seed should be covered by at least 32mm ofsoil. For best results apply to a firm, moist seedbed that is free from clods. To ensure optimum activity, it is good practice to apply Lexus® SX pre-emergence within 1-2 days ofdrilling.

When using Lexus® SX in tank-mixtures, use recommended partner products only.

Application

Apply Lexus® SX in 100-400 litres of water per hectare in a FINE or MEDIUM spray. When crops are thick, the higher water volume should be used to improve coverage. Whenapplying Lexus® SX, care should be taken not to overlap spray swaths.

Weather

Lexus® SX may be applied provided the temperature is above freezing (0°C).

As residual activity is important for best results, avoid application of Lexus® SX undervery dry conditions or onto very dry soil. The product is rainfast within 1 hour of application.

Soil

Lexus® SX may be used on all soil types. On highly alkaline soils (pH>7.7) the residualactivity will be reduced, but contact control of grass and broad-leaved weeds will still beachieved.

Resistance managementThis product contains flupyrsulfuron methyl, which is an ALS inhibitor, also classified bythe Herbicide Resistance Action Committee as ‘Group B’. Use only as part of a resistancemanagement strategy that includes cultural methods of control and does not use ALSinhibitors as the sole chemical method of grass-weed control.

When herbicides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years inthe same field, selection of resistant biotypes can take place. These can propagate and maybecome dominating. A weed species is considered resistant to a herbicide if it survives acorrectly applied treatment at the recommended dose.

Development of resistance within a weed species can be avoided or delayed by sequencingor tank-mixing with suitable products having a different mode of action. A strategy for preventing and managing resistance should be adopted. The Weed Resistance ActionGroup have produced guidelines and copies are available from the HGCA, CPA, your distributor, crop adviser or product manufacturer.

Strains of some annual grasses (e.g. Black-grass, wild-oats, and Italian rye-grass) havedeveloped resistance to herbicides which may lead to poor control. Resistance management strategies should integrate both chemical and cultural approaches.

224 Lexus® SX/Bullion®/Ductis™ SX/Exceed® SX/Staka™ SX herbicides

Make the most of cultural options

Utilizing cultural control methods help reduce the need for herbicides and the risk ofresistance development. Common methods include:

Crop rotation – adopting as diverse a rotation as possible, including non-cereal andspring-sown crops, reduces the dominance of Black-grass and other annual grass weeds. It also allows a wider range of herbicide mode of actions to be utilized.

Ploughing – reduces weed numbers and lowers resistance risk. It buries freshly-shed seedand brings older, less-selected seed back to the soil surface. This increases the proportionof susceptible plants in the weed population.

Delayed drilling – allows a higher proportion of weed seedlings to emerge and be controlled before sowing, provided there is sufficient soil moisture for germination.Wherever possible, use a non-selective herbicide e.g. glyphosate, before drilling.

Competitive crops – weed suppression is enhanced by using higher seed rates, more competitive varieties and narrower rows.

Optimising chemical control

Many of the most active herbicides exert a high selection pressure and could increase therisk of resistance developing. It is essential to utilise strategies that help prevent resistancedevelopment to these herbicides, especially now that fewer herbicides MOA are available.

Pre-emergence herbicides – reduce the overall weed population and the need for higherrisk post-emergence products. Most pre-emergence herbicides are affected by enhancedmetabolism resistance, but generally only to a limited extent. They still play an importantpart in any integrated resistance management strategy.

Post-emergence herbicides – such as the ACCase (‘fops’, ‘dims’, ‘dens’) and ALSinhibitors (e.g. sulfonylureas), can provide very good levels of control of sensitive Black-grass. Both groups of herbicides can exert a high selection pressure. If target siteresistance increases to a high frequency in any field, very poor control is likely. To avoid,or delay, resistance development, do not rely on either class as the sole means of Black-grass control in successive crops.

Instead always use these herbicides, in mixture or sequence, with other lower risk modesof action herbicides.

herbicides Lexus® SX/Bullion®/Ductis™ SX/Exceed® SX/Staka™ SX 225

Implications of Black-grass resistance and the efficacy

of Lexus® SX

To optimise the effectiveness of your chosen chemical programme, it is always advisableto determine the level and type of resistant Black-grass in an individual field, prior toselection of herbicides.

It is well documented that many field populations of Black-grass have developed full orpartial resistance to a number of herbicide groups. The resistance mechanisms associatedwith Black-grass can be defined as one of two types.

Target site resistance

This can be split into two sub-types:

• ACCase target site resistance which affects ‘fops’, ‘dim’ and ‘den’ herbicides. Lexus® SX is unaffected by this type of resistance.

• ALS target site resistance is currently less common than ACCase resistance. Lexus® SX will not offer any control of ALS target site resistant Black-grass.

Enhanced metabolic resisance (EMR)

Where EMR occurs in a Black-grass population, the efficacy of Lexus® SX and other herbicides may be affected. EMR Black-grass plants are able to break down herbicidesquicker than susceptible plants. This means that the level of control achieved by a herbicide programme may vary from field to field.

What is the optimum timing for Lexus® SX on a Black-grass population exhibiting EMR?Trials results over a number of years on a range of EMR Black-grass populations indicatethat Lexus® SX has the greatest activity when applied pre-emergence of the Black-grass.

Recommendations for use

Winter barley pre-emergence for Black-grass and broad-leaved

weed control

Lexus® SX may be applied as a pre-emergence application only.

Control levels will vary according to the resistance status of the Black-grass.

Apply Lexus® SX 20g/ha pre-emergence in a tank-mix with a suitable partner such as:

• Crystal (up to 4.0 l/ha)• Pendimethalin (up to 3.3 l/ha of a 400 g/lt formulation)• Liberator (up to 0.6 l/ha)• Defy (up to 5.0 l/ha)

Winter oats, rye and triticale post-emergence for broad-leaved

weed control

Lexus® SX may be applied post-emergence of the crop either alone or in tank-mixturewith an appropriate additional herbicide partner. Using Lexus® SX in sequence after a pre-emergence herbicide mix will help to enhance weed control.

Lexus® SX is an ideal low rate, residual and contact mixture partner controlling key weedssuch as volunteer oilseed rape, groundsel and mayweeds. It also, has some useful additiveactivity against volunteer beans, red dead-nettle, crane’s-bill, fools-parsley and smallautumn germinating fumitory.

Applications should ideally take place in the autumn period (October-November) duringactive growth of the weeds.

herbicides Lexus® SX/Bullion®/Ductis™ SX/Exceed® SX/Staka™ SX 227

Winter wheat (all current varieties but not Durum).

Lexus® SX may be applied either pre or post-emergence in winter wheat at a maximumrate of 20g/ha.

THERE ARE THREE DISTINCT RECOMMENDATIONS:

1 – Pre-emergence application for Black-grass control

If Black-grass populations are suspected or known to exhibit enhanced metabolic resistance (EMR), then Lexus® SX will offer its best efficacy when applied pre-emergenceof the Black-grass. Control levels will vary according to the resistance status of the Black-grass.

Lexus® SX 20g/ha and an approved non ALS tank-mix partner such as:

• Crystal (up to 4.0 l/ha)• Pendimethalin (up to 3.3 l/ha of a 400 g/lt formulation)• Liberator (up to 0.6 l/ha)• Defy (up to 5.0 l/ha)

may be applied to winter wheat prior to Black-grass emergence and can then be followedby an application of mesosulfuron and iodosulfuron.

PLEASE NOTE: If the above sequence of products is used, no further ALS herbicidemay be applied to the crop.

2 – Post-emergence application for control of susceptible

Black-grass populations

Susceptible Black-grass populations will be well controlled by the use of Lexus® SXapplied post-emergence as part of an herbicide programme.

Lexus® SX 20g/ha may be applied post-emergence of the crop in tank-mix or sequencewith an appropriate tank-mix partner with an alternative MOA such as pendimethalin andflufenacet based products. Using Lexus® SX in sequence after a pre-emergence herbicidewill help enhance weed control.

228 Lexus® SX/Bullion®/Ductis™ SX/Exceed® SX/Staka™ SX herbicides

3 – Post-emergence application for broad-leaved weed control

Lexus® SX 10g/ha may be applied post-emergence for control of key broad-leaved weedssuch as volunteer oilseed rape, groundsel or mayweed.

The susceptibility ratings of broad-leaved weeds in the following table refer to post-emergence application to winter wheat with good spray cover and good growing conditions.

KEY: S = Susceptible MS = Moderately susceptible

RESIDUAL ACTIVITY = ROOT UPTAKE, ESSENTIAL FOR CONTROL

(1) Regrowth of Chickweed may occur where residual activity is reduced by excessive rainfall, warm soilsand/or very dry soil conditions.

Use of adjuvants

Post-emergence: Certain adjuvants can increase the activity of Lexus® SX mixes on someweeds. They also increase the potential for crop effects. Care should be taken with softcrops in the autumn. We would advise against the use of adjuvants in the spring period.

Supported adjuvants are: Mineral oils (1%), Methylated seed oils or Galion (0.5%).
