onWhen William Hood Dunwoody left instructions in his Last Will and Testament to provide three million dollars to establish Dunwoody Institute, he stated that his purpose was to “provide for all time a place where youth without distinction on account of race, color or religious prejudice, may learn the useful trades and crafts, and thereby fit themselves for the better performance of life’s duties.”

What began more than 100 years ago as the Dunwoody Institute is now Dunwoody College of Technology.

Dunwoody is the only private, non-profit technical college in the Upper Midwest. It has graduated more than 250,000 men and women who have gone on to have long, fruitful careers. Our students who graduate today join that tradition. It is a long and proud one. People and companies in the area know that if you hire a Dunwoody graduate, you are getting somebody with the skills and work ethic to get the job done and done right.

Dunwoody graduates have built much of the Twin Cities, both actual buildings (such as U.S. Bank Stadium) and the companies that make this a great place to live and do business.

Today, nearly 500 students join the Dunwoody tradition. We are proud of them, excited for them, and confident that the tradition will continue on in their capable hands.

Our students who graduate today join that tradition.

Dear Dunwoody Graduate:

You made it. In a year that has been defined by crisis and change, those three words are not to be taken lightly. It took a lot of hard work, discipline, and the support of your friends, family, and instructors, but you made it. You are now a Dunwoody graduate. You should be proud of your accomplishments as you embark on a rewarding career.

The COVID-19 crisis may have taken away our celebration, but it has not taken away or undermined the significance of your achievement. It has only heightened your accomplishment. Through this most challenging experience you have learned what you are capable of — I hope you see the sky is truly the limit and that you have boundless potential.

We are all proud of you. You represent the best that our brand of education can offer. You have continued the legacy of Dunwoody alumni who came before you by being a creative, ambitious problem-solver. Your challenge now is to bolster and build on the Dunwoody reputation for excellence. The skills you learned, your own determination, and the Dunwoody name put you on the top of the collection of résumés. If you have a job already lined up, congratulations and all the best. If you haven’t yet landed a job and need help with career advice and leads, make sure to stay in contact with our staff at the Anthony L. Ferrara Career Services Center.

Academic Regalia

Faculty and graduates traditionally wear academic regalia during Commencement. This practice dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries when universities in Europe were first taking shape.

Originally, the academic dress was worn at all times by the faculty and students, but, for practical reasons, it is now worn mainly at college commencements.

The standard academic dress includes a robe, some type of cap (usually a mortarboard), and a hood. A tassel is worn on the cap, and after the degrees are awarded, the students move the tassel from the right to the left to indicate their status as a graduate.

The interior lining of the hood often displays the colors of the institution from which the wearer earned the degree, and the length of the hood varies by the degree earned (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate). In addition, the color of the trim on the hood usually indicates the academic discipline or subject in which the wearer earned the degree.

Today’s bachelor’s degree candidates received hoods with a black shell silk-lined in silver and red, representing the colors of Dunwoody. The graduates’ academic majors are represented by the following colors:

Student Speaker: Brynn Pavlica

Brynn Pavlica worked as a pharmacy technician for five years before deciding that it just wasn’t for her. Pavlica quit and hit the road, working music festivals across the country. Driving between Kansas City and Oregon, she became enthralled with the wind farms and the power they generate.

That interest led her to Dunwoody, which she remembered from college fairs at school, and specifically to the Electrical Construction & Maintenance

program and Program Manager Polly Friendshuh’s classroom. In Friendshuh, Pavlica found a role model and a mentor, an important thing for women in STEM majors.

Pavlica embraced that opportunity. She joined the National Electrical Contractors Association, (NECA) and eventually became president of Dunwoody’s Student Chapter, which gave her the opportunity to serve on student panels at national conferences. She enjoyed making connections and learning more about the industry, she also wanted to help grow the number of women working in industry.

“What I hope to do in the future with NECA is to continue to provide STEM applications and STEM events and bring more women into the fold and reach a younger generation,” she said.

Pavlica is a believer in the power of community. At Dunwoody, she competed as part of Dunwoody’s SkillsUSA team and took third place in the 2019 national competition in Extemporaneous Speaking. She’s also actively sought out opportunities to serve in the community, including volunteering her time teaching young kids the basics of electricity.

All of her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Pavlica recently received the Outstanding Technical Student Award from the American Technical Education Association.

Pavlica currently works as an Electrical Apprentice at Japs-Olson, a commercial printing and direct mail company in St. Louis Park.

Keynote Speaker: Claire Ferrara

A Dunwoody alumna, Claire Ferrara grew up around her family’s business — Standard Heating & Air Conditioning, a third-generation company started by her grandfather in 1930. Her first experience at the company began as a teenager for summer work, including as an apprentice installer. After subsequently earning two college degrees and other industry experience, Ferrara returned to the company in early 2016. She started in a sales position before later becoming Sales Manager. Proud to be a female leader in a

male-dominated industry, Ferrara became company President in 2019 and this February majority owner.

After 90-years, Standard Heating & Air Conditioning continues to serve Twin Cities residents, while also valuing service to the surrounding community. The company involves both their customers and employees in direct nonprofit giving and volunteer work in the community, has been a MN Keystone Program member for almost 25 years, and works closely with both Homeward Bound and MACV (MN Assistance Council for Veterans) to donate equipment and services to heat and cool homes.

Personally, Ferrara donates her time to several nonprofit organizations and is also a proud supporter of Dunwoody College of Technology where she has served on the Alumni Association Board since 2013, including as President from 2016-2018. During her tenure, she helped establish the Kate Dunwoody Luncheon as the College’s premier event celebrating women pursing technical careers.

In addition to her community service, Ferrara is passionate about the heating and cooling industry. She is involved in several industry-affiliated organizations, holds a number of industry specific certifications and licenses and gets excited about promoting and recruiting for the many career opportunities within the trade that she feels will make people’s lives better.

Attendance AwardThe Alumni Association has chosen to recognize graduating bachelor of architecture, bachelor of science, associate of applied science, and certificate students who have maintained excellent attendance with an Attendance Award. Students’ attendance is tracked and tallied at the end of their academic program. Calculations are based on the total number of hours a student attends class. The award is given to students for the following achievements:

100% Attendance

Outstanding Attendance (98% attendance or higher)

Cum LaudeThis award is given to students who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 to 3.69. These students will receive white honor cords to mark their achievement.

Magna Cum LaudeThis award is given to students who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 to 3.89. These students will receive silver honor cords to mark their achievement.

Summa Cum LaudeThis award is given to students who have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or better. These students will receive gold honor cords to mark their achievement.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year higher education institutions. Membership in PTK requires students to maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher in an associate of applied science degree program. PTK students will receive a gold honor stole, and a gold tassel on their caps.

Veteran and MilitaryIn recognition of military service to the United States of America, Veterans and Military students will be receiving red, white, and blue honor cords.

Academic Excellence AwardThe Academic Excellence Award is given to one or two graduating students from each academic department. Nominees are selected by faculty members and must have 90% attendance or higher and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Additional criteria are: a solid work ethic, extra-curricular participation, collegiate camaraderie, pursuit of excellence, and self awareness. The Academic Excellence Award winners received medallions that were designed and fabricated by the College’s Machine Tool Technology program.

Dunwoody Diversity & Inclusion AwardThis award is presented to the student who has shown exemplary promotion of multicultural and diversity initiatives through their work at Dunwoody and in the greater community. This award is based upon the student’s accomplishments and efforts over the course of their time at Dunwoody and reflects a commitment to diversity, resulting in a positive impact to the College community.

Dunwoody Community Service AwardThis award is presented to a student who has made outstanding contributions of volunteer service at Dunwoody and in the community. The award is based on the student’s service during their time at Dunwoody and demonstrates a commitment to service through activities that benefit the greater good.

Student Leadership AwardThe Alumni Association Student Leadership Award recognizes students who exemplify leadership, scholastic excellence, community service, and school spirit. Students must be recommended by a faculty member and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
