Knoxville Maryland NACSW trial report On Sat Sept 14 and Sun Sept 15, ODTC held a NACSW nose
work trial at Camp Manikodan in Knoxville, Maryland. The
levels were NW3 and NW2. Many thanks to Dana Crevling,
the NACSW Certifying Official and to the judges, Jacy Kelley
and Garrett Dyer for a great day.
The weather was perfect. There was a great showing of
volunteers, in fact, we had to close out volunteer sign up
(volunteers with nothing to do is not a good thing) and
asked people to instead sign up for our November trial at
Parkton, MD. Again, many thanks and kudos to the nose
work community, who volunteer and support our trials.
Many thanks to the ODTC members who came out to
volunteer and support the two-day event. See the Shout-Out
section Titles, photos and “thank you’s”.

Member Highlights!
Rachel Lachow (Member since1993)
I joined Oriole in 1993 when I moved back to Baltimore with my
husband, infant and three dogs.
I came from a very friendly and active dog club in Ft. Collins,
Colorado and was anxious to meet the local dog folks. I had a
Pharaoh Hound working in Open and Utility and a Pharaoh and
a Whippet starting in Novice.
I am a bird ecologist turned dog trainer. I've been a professional
trainer for 25 years and work with behavioral problems as well
as basic manners.
My dogs have competed in many dog sports including Obedience, Rally, Agility, Nosework, Open
and Field Coursing, and Conformation. We have also done therapy dog work.
After joining Oriole, I became an active member, serving on the Board for three years as the
Obedience Training Director and have taught Basic, Advanced Basic, and Puppy classes at Oriole
for 20 years.
I have four dogs:" Wren", CH Tiara
Summer Flight, SC, NA, NAJ, TKN,
CGC; 7yo Pharaoh Hound
competing in Rally, Nosework and
Agility; "Pippi" Positively Pippi
ORT, NW1, TKN, a 6 yr Chi/Italian
Greyhound mix competing in
Nosework, "Jib", Positively Smooth
Sailing CD, TKA, AX, AJX, an 11
Standard Poodle competing in Rally
and Obedience, and "Ivy" Anubis'
Positively Social Climber, a 4 month
old MENACE of a Pharaoh Hound
soon coming to a ring near you to
climb up your body and nest in your
hair. Ivy has her first conformation
show next month and we expect great things from her in all sports.
I also have three children, one of whom is married with a baby and living in Dallas, one of whom
is getting married early October and moving to Israel, and one who is still close and dear.
Educational
Rabies: Protect Your Family and Pets - Sept. 2019 AA
County Health Dept.
What is rabies?
Rabies is a deadly viral infection that attacks the central
nervous system of mammals. Rabies is a significant public
health threat. Rabid animals can come into contact with
people and their pets. People, pets, livestock and wildlife can
contract the disease. While pets and livestock can be
vaccinated against rabies, people exposed to rabies must
undergo a costly series of postexposure shots to protect them
from the disease.
How is rabies spread?
The rabies virus lives in the saliva of a rabid animal and is
most commonly spread through a bite from an infected
animal. The virus can also be spread from scratches and from
infected saliva entering a wound or mucous membrane (eyes,
nose or mouth).

What types of animals are at greatest risk?
Rabies is most often seen in raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks. Unvaccinated domestic animals, such as dogs,
cats, ferrets, horses and farm animals, are also at risk.
How can I protect my family and pets against rabies?
Be sure your dog, cat or ferret is vaccinated against rabies, and keep your pet’s vaccination up-to-date.
Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets 4 months of age and older be vaccinated against rabies.
Pet cats need to be vaccinated and kept inside.
Discourage wild animals from coming into your yard and house by following these recommendations:
• Keep all trash in tightly secured trash cans with lids.
• Do not touch or feed wild or stray animals. Wild animals, even cute young ones, that look as if they need
affection, help or rehabilitation might in fact have rabies.
• Teach your children not to play with stray, strange or wild animals.
• Keep all doors, windows and other openings tight fitting and secure against animal entry.
• Maryland law prohibits residents from possessing certain wild animals, including raccoons and foxes,
because these and other animals can pose a significant risk to humans. Only licensed wildlife
rehabilitators should handle wildlife.
What should I do if a wild or stray animal bites my pet?
If your pet is bitten or scratched, or if saliva comes in contact with an open wound or mucous membrane
from a wild or stray animal, you should seek veterinary attention for your pet. Wear gloves and long
sleeves if it is possible that saliva from another animal is on your pet. All bites should be reported to the
County Police Department Animal Control.
What should I do if my family has been exposed to the rabies virus?
If you are bitten or scratched, or if saliva comes in contact with an open wound or mucous membrane from
a wild or stray animal, seek immediate medical attention. Contact your physician or go to the nearest
emergency room. Your physician can consult with the Department of Health to determine if there is a need
for rabies postexposure treatment. All bites should also be reported to the County Police Department, or to
Animal Control.
Shout-Outs!
NASCW Trial - Many thanks to Linda and Don Grskovich and to the other ODTC members who came out
to volunteer and support the two-day NASCW Trial. Sue Cox, Mary Ann Dresler , Donald Grskovich,
Linda Harrison, Melissa Jones, Debbie Kaminski, Luann Korona, Adrien Meckley, Nancy Morris, Marge
Paulding, Sara Tagget, and Leslie Wharton.
AKC Fast Cat – Thank you to Carle Detweiler, Deborah Dean, Shirley Harry, Kelly Welch, Jacque
Reardon, Mary Mynaugh, Penny Miller, Wendy Midgette , Holly VanHauten, Chris Bevillard, Krista
Shreet, Sue Cox, Linda and Don Grskovich, Mary Anne Dressler, and Sarah Tagget.
From Deborah Dean - ALL of you worked so hard: stood in the sun and heat, didn't take breaks, graciously
allowed me to jump ahead of you on the start line (to relieve Carle, so she could begin checking in
competitors) and had an abbreviated lunch break each day. We looked out for each, providing breaks,
water and support-without instruction the trials flowed seamlessly!
You guys came early to help Ching set up and stayed late to assist him in the tear down. You set the club
areas up and were there to break them down. Trash was collected and the site was pristine when it was
over.
A special thanks to our Trial Chair Carle, who went home after each hard day, and prepared meals for us
(which were delicious).
NACSW Trial - ODTC members had a great day and again came home with ribbons.
Out of 35 competitors, there were 10 NW3 titles and 4 NW3 Elite titles. An Elite title is earned
once the team has earned the NW3 title three times.

and Porter. Helena and Porter also received their NW3-I and NW3-C tiles and the NW3 title with
the distinction of “Pronounced”. Sara Taggett and Desi achieved a 3rd place in the Exterior
element, and a NW3 Elite with a “Pronounced” . A Pronounced ribbon is awarded to the team
who the 2 judges believe demonstrated exceptional technique and/or teamwork in all 4 elements of
the nose work competition.
Out of 38 handlers on Sunday, there were 12 NW2 titles. Mary Ann Dresler and Dolce achieved
their NW2 with an overall 3rd place, and 3rd place in exteriors. Deborah Dean and Iselin got 3rd

me” Dolce, who is not crushing the box (yeah) is
