PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE UPDATE

Brethren of the Duluth Valley,

I bring greetings from our Sovereign Grand Inspector General Jerry Oliver. We are near

the end of summer and I trust all are enjoying the season, its activities, as well as family

and friends.

Have been watching the exciting news reports re the Scottish Rite Speech and Language

Clinic? Congratulations to the Foundation Board for their work for the on-going care of

our kids and for making the new clinic possible. Brothers remember the membership of

the Foundation is the Scottish Rite Valley of Duluth; it is our philanthropy please we

must all do our share to support this wonderful service to children your donations are

needed!

You may have heard we continue to move toward a 501c3 for to help support the

treasures of the Lake Ave Masonic Center. This building needs our attention and

support; please join in supporting our building with your labors and treasure.

Viability of the Valley requires active membership, it is important that we have energy

from new members and an active membership to survive. The Venerable Master and

HOB have been working on the calendar, fast and traditional classes, and great

programs. With the new clinic and ongoing Temple needs it is the perfect time to

reengage our efforts and make this a banner year for membership and personal

reengagement in the Valley and Fraternity.

See you at the Scottish Rite! Stop and kibitz at the construction site. Seek out members

of the foundation, HOB, & building association to answer questions & for ways to help.

Be safe, well, and enjoy the final days of summer!!

Fraternally,

Raymond G. Christensen, 33°

CLINIC UPDATE | NEW CONSTRUCTION

On Wednesday, July 1st, the Scottish Rite Clinic

broke ground for a new state-of-the art building

adjacent to its current site at 28 West 2nd Street.

The new building will allow Scottish Rite to

more than double the number of children and

families it can serve, from under 100 to nearly 200

annually. Additionally, it will provide greater

visibility for the Scottish Rite and the Valley of

Duluth through the signage on the new building.

As you will see if you drive by 2nd Street, construction for the new Clinic building is

well underway. The offices on the west end of the old Clinic building have been

demolished, and excavation for the new site is complete. Forms for the new building

are going up, and soon footings with be poured. Contractor Kraus Anderson is moving

swiftly with the goal of completing most

of the outdoor work on the building

before winter. If things proceed as

scheduled, the summer 2016 Clinic

sessions will be held in the new building!

FALL FAST CLASS | September 18th & 19th

This Fall is your opportunity to share the Scottish Rite experience with a fraternal

Brother and offer them an opportunity to grow and bond with Brothers from a broad

range of Lodges and perspectives.

As a Brother who loves the slow cooked format and soul-searching depth of our

traditional class format, I am not one to cheer for reunions or fast classes. Yet, I would

have personally had to wait many years to join the University of Masonry if our Valley

did not offer one back in the early 2000s.

We, your Valley’s leadership, recognize the needs of many Brothers with numerous

commitments to family, work, as well as the travel distance to Duluth. To give these

Brothers alternative path, we will be offering the following Weekend condensed class this

Fall. Please use the included Petition (on the last page) or on our website.

Registration starts at Friday 4:30 PM, 4° at 6 PM, 14° at 8 PM

Saturday Check-in 7 AM, 18° at 9 AM, 30° at 1 PM, 32° at 3 PM.

FEAST OF TISHRI | October 1st

The Feast of Tishri is celebrated during the Jewish Festival of

Sukkoth and by Scottish Rite Masons as an age-old custom which

now has the power of law. Under the Statutes of the Supreme

Council, the feast is considered an obligatory observance, a sharing

of our fraternal spirit. It also commemorated the completion and

dedication of King Solomon’s Temple. King Solomon postponed

the dedication of the Temple until the Feast of Tishri, on the 15th day of the month of

Tishri which was six months after its completion. The month of Tishri is the first month

of the Jewish sacred year.

The message of Tishri comes to us strongly and

clearly from across the ages because it has been so

preserved in the symbolism and allegory of the

Scottish Rite. Through our observance of this great

feast of thanksgiving, we, as heirs of Solomon,

perpetuate his magnificent Temple of freedom in our

lives, our communities, our country and, most of all,

in our beloved Rite. (Scottish Rite Ritual Monitor and Guide, Third Edition)

DRONE STAR | October 8th

Star advertising company, will discuss his unique

how his drones have an ability to get to otherwise unreachable angles as

well as view some breathtaking views of Duluth that cannot be found

MN TEEN CHALLENGE | October 22nd

gaining freedom from chemical addictions and other life

emotional and spiritual needs. They offer effective and

affordable programs throughout Minnesota with campuses in Minneapolis, Brainerd,

Rochester, Buffalo, and right next to the Masonic Center in Duluth.

MN Teen Challenge offers both a long-term, faith-based recovery

program and short-term treatment program called Life Renewal,

CLINIC NIGHT & RING CEREMONY | October 29th

The Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders currently

helps over 80 children each year, and, since opening on the UMD

campus in 1990, it has helped over 2000 children without regard for the

families’ ability to pay. Scottish Rite Masons in northern Minnesota can

take great pride in what their Clinic has accomplished. Yet many

children in need of help communicating go untreated. It is not unusual

for the Clinic’s waiting list to include up to 50 children who sometimes must wait up to

a year for help. This is simply too long. Many more children and families in the region

need help but don’t yet know about Scottish Rite. This is all about to change with the

new construction! But the new building is only the first step toward the goal of helping

more children as we will discuss on October 29th Clinic Night.

Carol Roberts and skilled staff will further enlighten us

about the “Expanding Hope” campaign to fund the new

building and the operating expenses associated with the

Clinic’s future growth. Join us for a wonderful guest

night with our traditional Ring Ceremony to follow.

HISTORY OF WADE STADIUM | November 5th

Join us for an evening with Brother Mike Rosenzweig, 33° who

will enlighten us on the history of our local iconic baseball park

currently found near the intersection of Grand Avenue and 34th

Avenue West in the West Duluth. Home to the Duluth Huskies

of the Northwood’s League, "The Wade," has an intriguing

history going back to its early beginnings in the 1940s as a part

of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) stadiums.

HONORING OUR VETERANS | November 12th

How do you measure a soldier's sacrifice? Is it by the number of

friends and family left behind? Is it by the months or years given in

service? How do you measure a soldier's courage? Is it by the number

of objectives completed, or by the number of bullets dodged or

missions served?

How do you measure a soldier's honor? Is it by the duty he or she

volunteers for, or by the number of medals earned? The simple truth

is that these things are immeasurable, as is this country's debt to all

who serve, and pay the price for freedom in this land.

(adapted from Kelly Roper)

THE GALES OF NOVEMBER | November 19th

Every November, Lake Superior’s winds pick up and echo

the history still etched in our mind of the Edmund

Fitzgerald sinking in 1975. On November 19th we will hear

from the Lake Superior Marine Museum in an illuminating

program called “the Gales of November.” For example, did

you know that the famed Splitrock Lighthouse on our north shore was built in response

to ships sinking in the early 1900’s during other gales of November and still holds an

beacon lighting ceremony to honor the fallen maritime personnel of the Fitzgerald each

year? Mark your calendars for a delightful evening of history and intrigue.
