Frances Bacon, 7 Reece Mews, South Kensington, SW7 and at Dale Farm, Suffolk.

John Edwards, heir to Francis Bacon,

    and thence by decent

7 Reece Mews, South Kensington was the modest London home and studio of Francis Bacon. It was from this small one bedroom Victorian mews house that Bacon painted some of his most famous works and entertained many of his influential friends including Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach.

The service was given to Bacon by his sister, Winifred, before her death in 1981 for use at Reece Mews. However, according to David Edwards, brother of Bacon's heir John Edwards, the service was removed from Reece Mews in 1985 as Bacon felt there was simply no need for such a large a large and smart service at the tiny apartment. Subsequently, it was sent to his country retreat, Dale Farm, Suffolk where it has remained until the present day.

John Walden was a key figure in the political life of Hong Kong during the second half of the twentieth century. His career began in 1951 when he joined the British Colonial Administration. Over the years he served as a District Officer, Justice of Peace, worked within the Housing Department and Colonial Secretariat, and finally became Director of Home Affairs. In 1980 he took early retirement in order to become an independent political commentator, activist and author.

In November 2014 Dukes were honoured to sell Part 1 of the John Walden Collection, which included the principal jade, ceramics, paintings, and other works of art. This second group represents Waldens wider interest in classic Chinese ceramics. Many of the pieces shown here are of a more recent date but still stand within well-established ceramic traditions.

For instance, an intriguing group of Longquan foliate bowls (lots 286-291) serves as a study in the subtle differences between celadon glazes ranging from standard Longquan type to those which evoke the Guan and Ru styles. Also of note are a group

of Cizhou and Jizhou wares (lots 261-271) which exhibit the stunning range of glazes developed by potters at these kiln sites during the Song Dynasty. Walden looked at each pot on its own merit and was thus quite happy to collect pieces of a later date which he nonetheless found beautiful.

As well as this group of ceramics, the auction includes other categories from the collection which are indicated in the catalogue.

People who worked with John Walden remarked on his kindness, patience, and concern for individuals. He dedicated his life to serving the Hong Kong people with integrity and was a counter-cultural voice within the British Administration, calling the government to greater transparency and accountability. He broke with colonial tradition by promoting local people to positions of influence and was totally committed to enabling the Hong Kong people to govern themselves.

Dukes have been delighted to handle this collection, which serves both to celebrate John Waldens love of Chinese art and culture, and his lifelong dedication to the people of Hong Kong.
