My Early LifeI was born October 14, 1633, in St. James Palace in London.

My dad was King Charles I and my mom was Henrietta Maria.

I lived in Oxford from 1642 to 1646.

I was formally named the Duke of York in 1644 when I was only 11.

I joined the French army in 1652.

I left the French side and went to the Spanish.

I went into exile because my father was executed in the English Civil War.

My Middle LifeIn

September, 1660, I married

Anne Hyde.

We had eight

children and only 2 survived.

Anne later died.

I then married a princess, Mary of

Modena and I had six children.

When my brother was named to

the English throne, I

was made the Duke of Albany in

1660.

I eventually came out of exile with

my brother, Charles II

and regained

my title as the Duke of

York.

While I was in exile I

was exposed to

Roman Catholicism which later became my

religion.

My Middle Life (Cont.) I was taken of my political positions from

The Slave Trade• I was heavily involved in the slave trade.• I was the head of the Royal African

Company which monopolized the slave trade.

• Thousands of slaves were branded on the forehead with the letters DY.

What I Did for the Colony I lead the capturing of New Amsterdam

from the Dutch in 1644. The colony was later on named New York

after me.

My Late LifeI withdrew from my position of Duke of York and Duke of Albany in 1685.I was king of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1685.I was taken away from those positions in 1688 because of the Glorious Revolution.I fled to France.This is where I spent the rest of my life.

Other Interesting Facts About Me

My body was not buried. It was laid in a coffin in the Chapel of Saint Edmund.Some of my body parts were extracted and sent throughout the world when I died.Though all of this was desecrated in the

French Revolution by mobs.Though part of my body was found in the

parish church of Saint Germain-en-Laye in 1824.

It is still there today.
