DUFFS FOOTWEAR

Skate shoes take a hell of a beating. Anyone that’s shelled out their hard earned cash for a pair of shoes that fall apart after a couple of days knows that fashion only gets you so far in this world. A good skate shoe needs to not only look good but stand up to the abuse that skaters dish out on a daily basis. In these pages we’ll look at some of the tricks that hand out the most abuse and some shoes that were built to live through those abuses.

DUFFS FOOTWEAR - FALL 2011:

It really doesn’t matter if the ollie in question is a nicely boned example or a switch rocket monstrosity, the truth is that the ollie is now and has always been one of the most diabolical destroyers of skate footwear. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not suggesting you should stop ollieing. Not at all. Take the ollie away and we’d all be a bunch of Daniel Gesmers (youtube him) gliding around without a care in the world. I’m just saying the ollie does it’s best to kill skate shoes and we do our best to protect against it. Keep ollieing boys and girls!

THE OLLIE:

See the way your toe scrapes along the griptape on a proper kickflip. It’s sheer brutality with respect to skate footwear. The kickflip however, is one of the things that makes skateboarding better than all other “extreme sports”, for lack of a better term. They all want to flip their, uh, equipment or whatever, but they can’t because they’re attached to it. Either that or it’s a huge unwieldy thing like a surfboard. I know they flip surfboards. It just doesn’t look very good. Skateboarding FTW.

THE IMPOSSIBLE:

This one has had a bit of a resurgence of late. If it’s done well it’s an oldie but a goodie. Really, if it’s not done well you’ve either done a 360 shove-it or you haven’t done anything. Not much room for error on that one. With the amount of griptape on toe action, it’s a first rate shoe killer. Not our shoes though, other lesser shoes.

To a non-skateboarder the 360 flip is very fancy indeed. It looks like controlled chaos. How do they get it to spin like that? We like the fact that everybody’s tre-bomb is unique. It’s the fliptrick equivalent of a fingerprint. Wait, take that back. It used to be. Now kids are infecting them with the fake steezy back leg. We hate that.

THE HALF-FLIP CASPER:

Some of you youngsters may not even know what you’re looking at here. This is the half-flip casper. This trick proves that skateboarding tricks leave no shoe surface untested. We passed. You should put this trick in your bag. It’s a S.K.A.T.E killer.

This is one of those super polarizing tricks. You either love it or hate it. You either do backside heels or backside kickflips. Probably not both. This particular moment in time looks like it could also be regular footed nollie back heel. It’s not though. Stacy can’t do those.

This is one of those tricks that doesn’t bridge the generation gap. It’s not a trick that the old dude at the park is cruising around doing between slashes on the quarterpips. No old guy is ever going to ask a kid to borrow his board because he used to skate and pop a nice nollie flip on it. It’s more likely he’ll do one of those super rockety 90 degree ollies. That’s why DUFFS suggests you never stop skating, so you’ll never have one of those rocket 90 ollies.
