The new design approach for Ducati’s sports bikes is also reflected in the smaller 749 model. The Ducati 749 is identical to its perhaps slightly more popular big brother the 999 in all respects except engine displacement. The 749 replaces the 748 model and is the perfect ma-chine for anyone who doesn’t want or need all the power of the 999.

GOAL

Since we have developed a system for the 999, it is a logical consequence that we would also develop a system for the 749. The similarity in the geometry and the design of both bikes made this a much easier task for us. Therefore we now also offer a complete Akrapovic EVOLUTION system for the 749 which in the same style beautifully complements the lines of the Italian twin.

ABOUT AKRAPOVIC EVOLUTION SYSTEMS

The Akrapovic EVOLUTION system is in the top class of Akrapovic exhaust systems. Its job is pre-cisely defined: first increased engine performance at the top of the rpm range, and then aesthetic enhancement of the bike’s design.

The central mounting position of the stock system required precision design of the Akrapovic system, especially of the muffler, and at the same time of some new carbon-fiber components which have never before been developed for our exhaust systems. The Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust system for the Ducati 749 is not very different from the 999. The main differences are the shape of the rear header tube and the one piece conical link pipe for the 749, while in order to preserve the identity of the lines of the rear ends of both bikes, the mufflers for both models are identical.

The tubes for this system are made of precisely gauged conical elements which ensure the correct flow of exhaust gases. The header tubes are made of high-quality stainless steel, while the conical link pipe is made of titanium. The header assembly is composed of three parts: a front header tube and a rear header tube, which are both attached to the header tube connector (a combination of a col-lector and extensions of the front and rear header tubes) with free-floating joints held together using high-quality silicon-shielded tensioning springs. As stated above, the rear header tube for the 749 are led slightly differently from the header tube for the 999. Another difference is that the smaller model does not have interference crossover tube installed between the header tubes. It also does not have a fitting for installing a lambda sensor.

The muffler is the part which grabs your attention first. We have developed a completely new integral single muffler for the Ducati 749 and 999 which is unlike anything which has ever appeared in our product range. Since the 749 and 999 have integral mufflers, we had to follow the same concept due to the design and construction of the bike. It is oval-section, with a dif-ferent outlet cap than we have previously produced for the Akrapovic Road program. The outer sleeve is available only in titanium, which goes extremely well with the refined lines of the Ducati. The metal parts in the interior of the muffler are also made entirely of titanium.The muffler and one piece link pipe are welded together to form a single component. In addition to the painstaking development of the

muffler, the R&D department put a great deal of effort into the design of the carbon-fiber brackets and the carbon-fiber clamp. The carbon-fiber brackets sit above and below the muffler.

Due to the stock design of the motorcycle, the carbon-fiber bracket on the underside of the muffler also carries the rear lights and the license-plate holder, and is attached directly to the muffler, while the carbon-fiber bracket on the top of the muffler holds the carbon-fiber clamp. In other words, the upper bracket is attached to the frame, and the clamp is attached to the upper bracket.

The Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust system for the Ducati 749 is also available with an optional car-bon-fiber leg protector which is mounted onto the link pipe.

Measurements of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION system on the Ducati 749:

•power: like the 999, the power curve for the 749 shows the character of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust system. Clearly the engine is from the same family, just with lower displacement. A huge increase at the upper end, and a smaller one at the lower end, especially below 3200 rpm. The drop-out in the stock curve from 4000 rpm all the way to 6400 rpm is filled nicely. The growth at the top of the range starts at 8200 rpm and leads right into the overrev range. At 10600 rpm with our exhaust system the engine delivers 105.2 HP, while the max. increased power is measured at 5200 rpm, in the middle of the drop-out, with a difference of 5.7 HP•torque: the specifics of the engine can be seen from the stock torque curve (peaks and drop-outs), so that in comparison the Akrapovic system, without regard to its high-rev orientation, does its job in the middle of the range as well. A slightly lower result up to 3800 rpm, from there on the loss in the lower revs is made up for, with the increase stretching to 6400 rpm. At 8200 rpm simultaneously with the power curve a huge increase is measured which again reaches into the overrev range.

This exhaust system not only provides extreme performance, but aesthetic enhancement with its refined, soft oval shaped titanium muffler and the dynamic downward-facing outlet cap, which beauti-fully complete the lines at the back of the Italian stallion. One of the most important specs for our top-of-the-line systems is the weight savings in comparison with the stock system. The Akrapovic EVOLUTION system will save you a full 8.80 kg of excess weight. And in exchange for the weight, the system will augment the sound of the Italian twin. The modification you made to the back of the bike will be clearly evident for all to see and hear. We put a great deal of effort into the development of this system, but it was definitely worth it. With its elegance and enhanced tone, we were hooked from the moment we installed it and fired up the engine!
