Introduction Using images from a trip to Dublin,

Ireland in the fall of 2012, this photo essay offers examples of how the city and its residents are moving forward into the Digital Era, while simultaneously clinging to remnants of a paper-based way of life.

Dublin is fairly typical of most cities – especially those in countries outside the United States, where physical books and newspapers are still highly valued and heavily used.

I wonder what it will be like the next time I visit?

Where is your city in itspaper-to-

Take a look at the people, places and

things around you

Newsstands still do a thriving business.

There are also still plenty of bookstores, but the viability of their business is less clear.

Old school “spam filters” – a great reminder that unwanted communication is not just a digital phenomenon.

WiFi EVERYWHERE! As a visitor from overseas, I especially

appreciated this. The constant access, ability to stay connected, and

low/no cost totally changes the quality of your experience.

Thanks to mobile devices and wi-fi access, internet cafes seem rather quaint today. But some have transformed

themselves into multi-purpose service providers.

An ancient church has gotta do what it’s gotta do…

But then again… This is the Shrine of St. Valentine in the

Whitefriar Carmelite Church. The “prayer book” is old school social media.

Declarations of eternal love on the Ha’Penny Bridge. Not all old school

social media involves paper.

New technology is employed to help with old problems…

And old. Bulletin boards are classic social media, and this is clearly a vintage one.

I loved the paper flyers for the Student Council folks. And the Posting Guidelines are another old school classic that have made their way into cyberspace.

Another old world/new world similarity:Some interest areas are just not as active or interesting as others. It’s always important to create spaces that properly

reflect one’s operating environment and stakeholder characteristics. Surf and bodyboarding – Srsly?

But the book and magazine store is still fully stocked. I especially loved the magazines focused on digital

technology. No irony there!

Sign of the times. This bricks and mortar electronics store

doesn’t want to just be Amazon’s showroom.

The “digital native” reads the paper while the “digital

immigrant” plays a game on a mobile device. So much for

stereotypes…
