Issue 2 Term 2 Week 6 Wednesday 1st June 2016
Delroy Campus – Year 7 Transition Evening
From the Principal...
We pay our respects to the Wiradjuri people, who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Delroy Campus sits,
and pay respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal people who are part
of our school community.
I would like to begin by congratulating Years
7 and 9 for their behaviour and attitude while
undertaking the Australia wide National
Assessment Program Literacy and numeracy
(NAPLAN) testing in week three.
A big thank you to Mrs Fiona Riley and her
team, for the superb organisation (and then
reorganisation!)
Assessments are an opportunity for students to
demonstrate what they have learned and
provides the school with
important data to inform
teaching and learning
programs. It is important
all students try to do their
very best in all their
exams and assessments.
This term, students will be
completing assessments
and exams for their half yearly reports. It is a
good idea to ensure due dates are written on
the calendar at home so assignments and
projects can be completed on time and
students are well prepared for any tests.
The Athletics carnival was a magnificent
day! Congratulations to all the students who
participated and thank you to Mr Dunlop for
his excellent organisation, Mr May who did an
outstanding job as carnival manager and to all
the staff for their commitment and profession-
alism in ensuring the carnival ran smoothly.
Also, a big thank you to the canteen staff and
the SRC for making sure we were well
nourished on the day - Yum! Student numbers
were well up on previous years, as well as the
number of students qualifying for Western.
What a fantastic effort! Yes, at Delroy,
we can run, jump and throw!
……..Principal report continued Page 2
‘YOU'RE THE VOICE’ conference
What do you want your legacy to be? What opportunities do you
have for student voice at your school? Which issues have the biggest
impact on your education?
These were some of the questions raised at the ‘YOU'RE THE VOICE’
conference attended by student council leaders from Delroy at
Warrambui Retreat, near Canberra. 150 future student leaders from NSW
immersed themselves in a range of workshops run by Year 11 students.
Delroy leaders explored major issues arising for students in education
today. Our leaders reflected on the importance of student voice at Dubbo
College Delroy Campus. We discovered that students can be more
engaged in their learning if they have meaningful conversations, listen to
staff and students and share in school decision-making.
What actually is important to our students at Delroy?
A recent study completed by students around NSW suggested that safety,
supportive environments, having a voice, respect and equality are most
important.
With this knowledge, student council representatives set about identify-
ing important steps forward in
student voice for all at Delroy.
Our goal as student leaders will
be to work at increasing the
profile and importance of student
voice in our school. In order to do
this, the SRC will work to
establish shared decision making
systems and processes with
students, staff and community
members. This will ensure all
students at Delroy have the best
learning experience possible.

2 2 DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 1st June 2016
2
We are progressing with the improvements to our school. Of particular excitement is the fact the inside student toilets
have been painted and the hand soap dispensers are now installed.
A pertinent reminder:
The new driveway alongside the hall is nearly completed and will provide a much better
access for staff who move in and out of school during the day, such as the cross campus
teachers and also for our regular delivery drivers.
It was disappointing that our school was damaged by fire on Mother’s Day. Thankfully,
the damage was contained to a small area - the eastern doors and wall of the hall, with no
damage to student work or property. This was due to quick action by members of the public
who saw the smoke and called 000 and then the speedy response of our local fire brigade, police
and security services. Our heartfelt thanks go to you all! Fortunately, school was
able to carry on as normal including NAPLAN testing which was moved to a different section of the
school.
Unfortunately, the new College uniform won’t be ready to start until 2018. We expect all students to be in the current uni-
form until then. The uniform shop is getting more stock in. There are plenty of winter track suit jackets for purchase if there
are not enough green polar fleece tops available in the right size. This is still school uniform. Please do not wear coloured
tops. Wearing a uniform demonstrating loyalty to our school and respect. So school uniform on every day. Tights are not
school uniform.
During Weeks 3 to 8 staff will undergo classroom observations to review the learning that is happening in the classrooms,
as part of the Performance and Development Framework (PDF) process.
“The overarching purpose of the performance and development process is to support the ongoing improvement of student
outcomes through continuous development of a skilled, effective and professional teaching workforce” (NSW Department
of Education and Communities 2015, Performance and Development Framework, p.1).
Further, at the Week 4 College Staff meeting, all College staff continued to develop feedback and literacy strategies to
enhance the learning in their Key Learning Areas (KLA). This adds to the work done on effective teams and evidenced
based check-ins to improve accountability and the learning environment.
I have spoken at each assembly about the values we expect to see of students from Delroy.
“Honesty is not encoded in our genes. Respect is not written in our DNA. You won't find perseverance reproducing in our
body like cells. Or loyalty hiding in your bloodstream. It doesn't matter how we begin. In the end, our values define us…”
United Overseas Bank Brand TV Commercial – Our Values Define Us.
Also from 2016 Australian of the year Lieutenant-General David Morrison,
‘the standard you walk past is the standard you accept.’
So I ask everyone who is part of the Delroy community to set high standards and be awesome, so every student at Delroy
can achieve their potential.

Principal report continued from Page 1….
Year excursions have been organised for all
year groups by the Year Advisers who have
put a lot of time and effort into devolving a
fun program to develop social and interper-
sonal skills, leadership and resilience which is
part of the holistic education of every student
that we aim to provide. We expect ALL
students to attend. They are normal school
days in another location. It is time to start a
payment plan. If you are having financial
difficulties please talk to the year DP because
we don’t want anyone to miss out of these
wonderful opportunities.

ENGLISH FACULTY NEWS
The English Faculty have been busy this term delivering a range of exciting and engaging units of work for students across
the year levels. Year 10, having just recovered from their sojourn through the world of POP CULTURE, are now hungrily
devouring a variety of weird and wonderful poems with a focus on appreciation and evaluation. Year 10 will undertake an
assessment task at the end of Week 6 in which they will be asked to utilise their skills through the comparison of two poems
studied in class.
Year 9 are also currently wading through the murky and mysterious waters of poetry having just completed several weeks of
Persuasive Writing and NAPLAN preparation. They too will be completing a poetry appreciation task towards the end of
term.
Year 8 are learning what it takes to create and produce a fantastic film through the study of the wonderful and highly
educational Australian films: ‘The Sapphires’ and ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’.
This term, Year 7 has kicked off with a bang undertaking a new unit of study entitled ‘Accelerated Literacy’. Students are
participating in a range of fun and very engaging ‘literacy-based’ activities which aim to promote deeper connection and un-
derstanding with language forms and features; in particular, spelling, grammar and writing strategies. The unit is scaffolded
so that students work from ‘low’ through to ‘high-order’ literacy skills in order to produce more contemplative and complex
written pieces.
So a very busy Term 2 in English and we look forward to reading all the great work still to come hot off the press!

ABORIGINAL GIRLS CIRCLE CAMP
The girls had their first camp on 5th and 6th of May at the Big 4 Caravan Park Dubbo. The workshops and activities on
the first day focused on ‘Communication’ and ‘Community’. The evening was spent with the girls in teams and challeng-
ing each other to see who could catch and eat an Oreo (without using their hands), manage the fastest egg and spoon race,
stack 21 cups the quickest and the all-important Trivia challenge. After much laughter on day 1, day 2 brought about
some serious discussion and decisions on the 2016 project. The girls have decided to focus on Volunteering and
Fundraising to help the local community. They have many ideas and hope to raise much needed funds as the year
progresses.
Some thoughts from the girls about the Girls Circle camp:
“Which activities did you enjoy?”
The challenges and the free time
The balloon popping activity because we had to work as a
team
The activity that involved helping each other out in the
community
The balloon popping activity and the web
Thank you to all the girls who went on the camp – you were an awesome group. Keep on sparkling!

‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’
Year 7 – Year 7 have been busy designing their mythical beast to make out of clay. The
students are almost ready to start the clay building process of their beasts, however
they are to become aware of the clay building skills and techniques prior to
receiving the clay in order to complete their beasts in great detail. They will also be
signing a Clay Contract designed by the class to allow the students to take responsi-
bility for their own actions. The teachers will be giving many demonstrations with
the students recording the steps and processes in their Visual Art Diary so to refer to
these notes when building themselves. Stay tuned for the next newsletter where
there will be plenty of pictures of the students constructing their beasts
Year 8 –
Year 8 are looking closely at Pop Art and artists involved in this art
movement. They are to complete a pop art inspired artwork as their
practical assessment. Some are using Photoshop as a means for their art
making, however, each student must complete a painting as well. This
can be done of someone famous, of food, popular household items; some
are even doing sculpture.

The students have also begun their theory assessment where they are required to research a Pop Art artist
and look at them closely regarding the Conceptual Framework. This will be completed and presented in
an artistic,
creative
way.
The photography students have been busy looking closely at
Appropriation and how artists have embraced appropriation through
different forms. The students have already appropriated everyday objects such as toothpicks, a compass, plastic lids and
pencil shavings. The students have also attempted their own appropriation of Barbara Kruger and her artist practice. From
here, students have begun working on their practical assessment where they are to produce a portfolio of 6 photographs
which are a form of appropriation. Many students are working hard on Adobe Photoshop to achieve this; however, others
are attempting to incorporate themselves or a friend into a photograph which is a little more difficult and involves a lot
more preparation.
The students have recently begun their theory assessment where they will study and compare the works of Anne Zahalka,
Charles Meere and Max Dupain. The students will present their findings to the class for student and teacher feedback. I
look forward to these presentations.

School Student Transport Scheme
For Schools and TAFEs - May 2016
An updated online form to apply for free travel between home and school will be available for students attending schools
in rural and regional NSW from 12 May 2016.
The form can be used by parents, guardians and students applying for free school student travel under the School Student
Transport Scheme (SSTS) and provides a single application process for School Opal cards and free school travel across
NSW.
Forms are completed by parents or guardians. Students 16 years of age and over must complete and sign the application
form themselves.
With 2016 rural and regional travel entitlements already issued for the year, most parents, guardians and students won’t
need to re-apply and should continue to use their current travel entitlement. A new application will only be required if
students change their school, campus, home address or name.
Bus operators will make their own arrangements with students as to whether a pass is required for travel to and from school.
Students who need to travel inside the Opal network will also be required to carry a School Opal card.
For more information go to www.transportnsw.info/school-students OR CALL 131500
Flame Tests in Science Year 9 Science students have been learning about atoms and the tiny sub-atomic particles inside them. They have been
using Flame Tests to show how electrons can be made to “jump” into different energy levels, which causes them to make
different colours of light. Since different elements (strontium, sodium, calcium, etc.) have different atomic structures, their
electrons will “jump” differently and have their own light signature. These sorts of investigations are important in Science
because they help us understand more about the relatively invisible parts of our universe.

Dorper excursion Last Thursday keen Agriculture students from Years 7 to 9 travelled up to Moree to take part in a two day training course.
The course was run at the Amarula Dorper stud by Lorrai and Justin Kirkby, both of whom are qualified assessors and
judges. The students learnt a lot over the two days ranging from: how to correctly assess the quality of a Dorper sheep right
through to making their own halters. Mr Piper was blown away when the students spontaneously started to quiz each other,
about what they had learnt, on the bus on the way home. Mr Piper would like to congratulate all the students on their
excellent behaviour and also thank Miss Griffiths and Mr Kelly for their assistance on the trip.

Sport News…... Country Cup
On Wednesday 18/5/16 Delroy Campus took part in the Annual Country Cup in u/13 and u/15. Tim Boney (Year 10) also
played for the open Dubbo College team.
The Under 15 team under the coaching of Mr Wade had a great day with many of the boys having not played competition
Rugby League before. Unfortunately, in their first two games the team lost by a converted try. In the last game against
James Sheahan Catholic School Orange, the side played its best game leading for all but the last five seconds. Best of the
team were Randall Dowling, Paul Eastwood and a rampaging Ian Gordon.
The Under 13 team under the coaching of Mr Long had a hugely successful day winning two games and losing two games.
The side defeated South Campus and St Johns B. They lost 10-8 to Red Bend Catholic College and 16-8 to James Sheahan
Catholic School Orange 16-8. Best players for the team on the day were Jack McDougall, Bayden Powell, Kenneth Jackson
and Jarmaine Elmes.
Well done to all the boys from both teams on their efforts on the day.
College cross country championships will be held on 7th June at the Dubbo racecourse
starting at 11.30am. Age groups will be 12-18 for males and females. If students come 1st,
2nd or 3rd in their age division they qualify for the Western Cross country to be held at the
Geurie racecourse on 14th June.
Astley Cup
The annual Astley Cup competition will be held in Week 9 and Week 10 of this term against Bathurst High and Orange
High. In this competition Year 10 from Delroy are available for selection (except rugby league). There are still a number of
teams to be finalised but at this stage the following have been selected:
Girls Hockey: Kyla Wilson, Hayley Smith, Emily Greer, Chloe Towers, Maddi Cafe, Breanna Hawkes
Girls Soccer: Teegan Hall
Girls Tennis
Congratulations to Nicole Kelly (10) and Amelia Day (7) who were part of the Dubbo College Girls tennis team
who defeated Gilgandra in Gilgandra. The team will now play Trangie in the next round
Girls Year 7/8 Netball
Last week our girls Year 7/8 netball team took part in
the NSW Cup for schoolgirls held in Dubbo. They
played five games on the day and had three wins and
two losses. The teams’ wins coming against Cobar,
Nyngan and Dubbo College South Campus (2). Best
players on the day were: Morgan Keys, Mirrikie Shaw
and Kady Lake. As always the girls played the games
in a great spirit with fantastic sportsmanship by all.
Thanks to Mrs Marsh for taking the team.
Open Rugby League
Well done to Tim Boney who is part of the Dubbo College Open Rugby League team who recently defeated Wellington in
Round 2 of the University Shield competition. They now play Nyngan in Nyngan in the next round.
Girls Hockey
The Dubbo College Open Girls Hockey team recently moved into Round 4 of their competition with a convincing 15-0 win
over Gilgandra High. In great news 8 out of 15 in the team come from Delroy Campus. Those girls are: Maddi Cafe, Breanna
Hawkes, Kenzie McFarlane, Chloe Goedee, Emily Goedee, Kyla Wilson, Lilli Campbell and Chloe Towers. The girls now
take on Parkes in Parkes in the next round with the winner moving into the State finals of the competition.
