CÉAD MÍLE FÁILTE ROMHAT(ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES TO YOU)

Nestling on the southern shore of Lough Allen, and hugged by the mythical Sliabh an Iarainn and Arigna Mountains, Drumshanbo is set in an area of special beauty. The name ‘Drumshanbo’ comes from the Irish ‘Droim-Sean-Both’, meaning “the ridge of the old hut”. The town is twinned with Locquirec in Brittany in the North West of France. Archaeological evidence indicates that people first came to the Lough Allen region during the late Stone Age / early Bronze Age period ( 3,500 - 3,000 BC ).

The Tuatha De Danaan were the fifth wave of invaders to come to Ireland. They ruled from 1897BC to 1700BC. Later, they went underground into the ‘ hollow ‘ mountain of Sliabh an Iarainn and other mountains, and into the hills of Ireland such as our own Sheemore and Sheebeg. Here they became the fairies or little people of later folklore.

Sliabh an Iarainn (Iron Mountain) and the Furnace Hill are timeless reminders of this area’s prominence as a source and a producer of iron for over a thousand years until 1765. Thereafter, this area became renowned as one of the largest producer of coal in Ireland until the Arigna mines closed in 1990. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Drumshanbo gained a fame or notoriety as a “busy” centre for the production of poitín (illicit alcohol).

The Franciscan Convent of Perpetual Adoration (The Poor Clares) in Drumshanbo has earned the respect and gratitude of people worldwide for the piety of its nuns and their support to all who have sought their prayers and help since the Convent’s foundation in 1864.

From 1888 to 1959, Drumshanbo was a lively station on the Cavan - Leitrim Narrow Gauge Railway. Lough Allen and the surrounding lakes and rivers has always been highly regarded by anglers from Ireland, U.K. and Europe.

Drumshanbo is also home to many festivals and events including the renowned festivals of - An Tóstal (1953 to the present day) and The Joe Mooney Summer School (1989 to the present day).

JOE MOONEY SUMMER SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC, SONG AND DANCE DATE OF FESTIVAL – 3rd full week in July each yearTwenty five years a-growing and now in full bloom. The story of its growth is both interesting and amazing. It began back in 1989 when a seed was sown in the town of Drumshanbo by a group of people with a vision to promote the unique style of Leitrim traditional music especially in flute and fiddle playing.

From small beginnings, the Mooney School as it is locally known, has grown organically from year to year to become widely known and highly regarded on the traditional calendar.

Daily workshops in music. song and dance with tutors of the highest calibre are the spine of The Joe Mooney Summer School Week, with evening talks and recitals and nightly Set Dancing Céilithe and impromptu sessions adding to the traditional experience for one and all.

The town of Drumshanbo with its unique High St - a natural stage for a traditional session - and the legendary hospitality of the Leitrim people will guarantee that all visitors will get a Céad Míle Fáilte

CHRISTMAS IN DRUMSHANBODATE OF FESTIVAL – December 8th

The Christmas period is a cheerful and joyous time for families all over the world. Here in Drumshanbo we kick-start the festive season with the turning on of our Christmas lights. This usually occurs on the weekend of the 8th of December.

We always manage to attract Santa Claus for a special visit to turn on the lights and over the years he has arrived on various modes of transports including a horse and trap, tractor and trailer and a Garda motorbike just to mention a few. Santa’s arrival always brings a large crowd to Drumshanbo but he always has time to meet and greet each child.

For the duration of the Christmas season the businesses of the town offer a wide variety of Christmas gifts and necessities for all your Christmas needs. Why not relax in one of the many pubs where a warm fire, good company and a great nights entertainment awaits. There is also carol service at Christmas.

HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSEDATE OF EVENT – October 31stEvery Halloween night, terrified screams ring out through the deserted streets of this haunted town. Only the very brave walk alone once night has fallen, because in Drumshanbo, you can be sure the footsteps you hear behind you, are not your own.

The cries of the undead fill the air amidst the rattles of the chains of the damned.

On the edge of this forsaken town lies a thrill seeker’s paradise, an abandoned house which is home to all of your nightmares and those that you have yet to dream. In the shadows of the deserted churchyard, the knell of the church bell calls those who refuse to rest out from the shadows to play for one night. Hosts of ghoulish creatures gather round smouldering fires while the rest play hide and seek with their victims. A game you will never forget.

As you enter through the graveyard, you are warned to stay together and not stray off the lighted path as nobody knows for sure, how far into the darkness you may go or what lies in wait...

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS AND SIGHT SEEING

Drumshanbo is a picturesque town that sits at the most northerly navigable point of the River Shannon, dipping its toes in Lough Allen and resting its elbows on the Arigna Mountains and Sliabh an Iarainn. Lough Allen provides great variety for the angler with plenty of bays, shallow and deep stretches, a few islands, a pier and lots more. Rudd, Perch, Bream, Roach and Hybrids, abound and where the Roach are to be found, large Pike are not far away, because this is one of Irelands premium Pike waters. There is no closed season for coarse angling in Ireland and a hearty Drumshanbo welcome and the great match fishing experienced by coarse anglers is complemented by the numerous cultural events

that take place during the year in Drumshanbo. While festivals provide companionship to those who like to fish in company, Irish coarse fishing also offers solitude and tranquillity on miles of unspoilt waters.

SLIABH AN IARAINN WALKS The area surrounding Drumshanbo is mountainous and hilly and there are excellent marked trails for walking enthusiasts, some of which are suitable for cyclists. Guarding the south-eastern shores of Lough Allen, 585m-high Sliabh An Iarainn is one of the best known summits in Leitrim.

The peak is commonly known by its Irish name, Sliabh An Iarainn, which translates as ‘the iron mountain’ and provides a clue to the role the hill has played in recent history. Many walking routes around Lough Allen have been signposted.

For the more adventurous, the Leitrim Way (Slí Liatroma) is a 48-km walk between Drumshanbo, Dowra, and Manorhamilton.A series of way-marked walks have been developed with walks ranging from 20-30 minutes to longer outings of a couple of hours. Each walk is documented with a colour map and brief notes on route-finding, local and natural history.

TGF ARCHITECTURE & GARDEN DESIGN“Our every day lives are influenced by the buildings we inhabit. A house is where you exist, a home is where you live. A home should provide us with ‘Comfort, Warmth & Security’. This is achieved by combining the basic principals of ‘Layout & Sunlight’. Successfully combined, a home will exude comfort, energise, but also sooth body & mind.”

DRUMSHANBO TOWN & FESTIVALS

The Adventure Playground of LeitrimDrumshanbo is situated in the heart of County Leitrim, in scenic woodland and on the shores of Lough Allen, one of the major course fishing centres in the country. It is beautifully preserved traditional town with plenty of traditional pubs, live music (for which the area is famous) and small local shops.

The town takes its name from the Irish, Druim-Sean-Bhoth or "Ridge of the old hut". A wide variety of walks, including hill-walking, can be explored within a 5-km radius of Drumshanbo.
