Positive displacement pipettes are commonly used for heavy liquids or ones that are too viscous to be displaced accurately by air, as well as dense, volatile, radioactive or corrosive samples. These pipettes are driven by a disposable piston that comes in direct contact with the sample. This means volatile liquids can be aspirated without evaporation. Next, decide if a manual or electronic positive displacement pipette is best for your application.
• Single-channel manual positive displacement pipettes are the go-to tool for handling viscous, dense liquids for diverse applications in the lab. Look through the short list below for ones that meet your sample volume requirements.
• Repeating manual positive displacement pipettes are used for repetitive serial pipetting. They are commonly used in applications such as biochemistry, immunology and microbiology where samples need to be rapidly dispensed in the same volumes. Look through the short
list below for ones that meet your sample volume requirements.

A Electronic positive displacement pipettes offer many advantages, but the most significant is the reduced force and fewer hand movements required for operation, which reduces the risk of repetitive stress injuries. Accuracy and precision are also often increased
as there is less room for operator error. Next, let's look at single-channel or repeater electronic positive displacement pipettes to see which is best for your application.
B Manual positive displacement pipettes are often more durable and better withstand the abuse of everyday lab use. When they do require maintenance, it is often more straightforward and easily accomplished by lab staff.
Next, let's look at single-channel or repeater manual positive displacement pipettes to see which is best for your application.

There are many different features of a pipette to take into consideration before making your purchase, including ergonomics, low force, fitting, ease of use, reliability, accuracy and precision. This guide will narrow down a list of models that might suit your pipetting needs by looking at three main selection criteria, including displacement method, manual or electronic operation and the number of pipetting channels. The models will not be broken down by volume range, as that varies widely from vendor to vendor. instead, the sample volume range will be listed after the make and model name. First, let's look at whether a positive displacement or an air displacement pipette fits your application best.
Author: John Buie
Air displacement pipettes are commonly used for aqueous samples and general lab work. They are driven by a piston within an air-tight sleeve that generates a vacuum through its vertical travel. This is triggered either from the depression of a plunger at the top of the pipette by your thumb when using a mechanical pipette, or the same process triggered by the touch of a button when using an electronic model. The sample never comes in contact with the piston, as it is separated by a cushion of air, referred to as dead volume. Next, decide if a manual or electronic air displacement pipette best suits your application.

PRODUCT FOCUS: PiPeTTeS
It is not much of a stretch to say that the 1961 introduction of the plunger-operated pipette revolutionized labo-ratory work. The obvious improve-ments over hand-operated, bulb-type pipettes were repeatability, accuracy, and the ability to deliver extremely small volumes of liquid reproducibly.
These advantages came at a cost, however. The high-throughput de-mands of modern laboratories have led to a rise in pipette-related re-petitive stress injuries (RSIs). In a worst-case scenario, RSIs can lead to surgery and lost productivity costing tens of thousands of dollars.
Improved ergonomics is therefore the most easily identifiable trend in pipettes. Materials used to manufac-ture pipettes have become lighter, and draw/dispense mechanisms eas-ier to actuate.
According to Andrea Dickstein, di-rector of marketing at Eppendorf (Hauppauge, NY), preventing RSIs should be a top priority in high-throughput labs. “Preventive measures are the best defense against RSIs,” she says. “Postures, positions, and activi-ties that cause discomfort should be modified or spaced out over time.”
Dickstein provides the following tips for selecting and using pipettes:
• Make sure the pipette fits well in the hand.
• Determine that the volume is easily adjustable and that all buttons are easily accessible.
• Choose a pipette whose plunger mecha-nism requires low activation force.
• Make sure the operator’s hand can flex without removing the pipette.
• When using a pipette for more than two hours a day, choose an electronic pipette for high-throughput needs, or multichannel pipettes for microti-ter plate applications.
• Consider automating through a liq-uid-handling workstation.
Christian Petrilli, director of market-ing at BrandTech Scientific (Essex, CT), believes that pipette ergonomics comes down to ease of use. “Are the various pipette operations intuitive? Does [the pipette] feel comfortable in your hand? Are its functions accessible and obvious?”
Space-age materialsMaterials make a difference in more than ergonomics. Today’s best pipettes are made from space-age materials
that are not only light, but also resist chemical, thermal, and mechanical stresses. Since many pipettes in use to-day operate with biological materials, cleanability is a must-have feature to prevent cross-contamination. Pipette surfaces should be fully cleanable with water, disinfectants, and appropriate solvents. Many pipettes are autoclav-able, meaning they can be steam-ster-ilized to kill pathogens. (Note that au-toclavable pipettes must still be wiped down or cleaned, however.)
Electronic pipettes are becoming more popular because of the re-duction in sample volumes and si-multaneous increase in the number of samples processed—particularly through microtiter plates. Electron-ic pipettes, which are considered a halfway point between manual and robotic liquid handling, offer ad-vantages of high reproducibility, a
reduction in the force necessary for operation, and multi-functionality in dispensing techniques. Dickstein says, “Electronic pipettes go beyond

Ergonomics has become a factor for many larger, stationary lab items such as refrigerators, ovens, and constant-temperature baths. Oven controls are not particularly difficult to navigate, but they should be readily view-able and accessible on a front panel and should not require the opera-tor to bend or reach. Nearly all lab ovens are used by more than one person, so workers should be able to access their materials or experi-ments easily, without disturbing those of their colleagues.
Labs concerned about operat-ing costs can now select ovens that minimize electricity consumption. A highly efficient oven in constant use can save thousands of dollars over the life of the appliance. Energy ef-ficiency is a complex characteristic based on type of heating and circu-lation, anticipated usage, tempera-ture range, insulation, door closing and gasket options, and other factors. Note that insulation also provides a measure of safety for operators.
Despite the simplicity of lab ovens, manufacturers compete on numerous
second-tier features, according to Mr. Ross, who lists “accurate temperature without overshoot,” time to heat up, reliability, and independent tempera-ture safety or shutoff on his list of
desirables, because, “you don’t want to burn the lab down.” Temperature programmability, cooling-down ca-pability, alarms, shelving options, monitoring, and data logging round out the features list.
Specialized oven typesThe term “kiln,” an alternative name for oven, is usually reserved for high-temperature ovens operating above 1,000ºC to about 2,300ºC. Kilns are
normally working ovens used to pro-cess materials such as wood (lower temperatures) and glass or ceramics (higher temperatures).
Another specialized oven type, the autoclave, is used for fixed-time sterilization of laboratory and medical instruments or lab ware. Autoclaves work by bathing objects in steam at 121ºC or higher, fol-lowed by a purge or drying cycle. At any given temperature, steam is significantly more effective at ster-ilization than hot air.

“Temperature uniformity is arguably the most important oven property after temperature range.”
