LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR SPRING | SUMMER 2016

Dear Friends of Drumlin Farm,

Welcome to a new year! I’ve been amazed by what was visible on the Drumlin Farm trails and paths as the mild weather of early winter allowed us to explore. No leaves on the trees and no snow on the ground meant that the debris of fall was still there – a gnawed black walnut shell here, a seedpod there. A small garter snake sunning on the ground near the Welcome Area was harder to spot against the dark brown earth, but its flickering tongue gave it away.

Before my husband and I had children, we overheard a mother in the park praising her child saying, “Good noticing!” How funny it seemed to us then, to give praise just for being aware of the world around you. Of course several years later, when our own toddler pointed to a red blur in the woods with his tiny yell of “Cahdinul!”—we realized how noticing the world is a developmental milestone. Being able to tune into what’s going on around you is a capability that young children thrill to, one that evolutionarily protected us from harm and now still builds observation skills and learning opportunities.

And yet, noticing the natural world is often one of the first things to go by the wayside when life gets hectic. As we scurry from house to car to office, it’s easy to miss what’s around us. What is lost is both the wonder at nature’s beauty and the accompanying thrill of discovery. For me, a day spent entirely in meetings rather than out noticing means feeling disconnected from the scientific curiosity that fuels my dedication to bringing Mass Audubon’s mission to others.

Thinking back to my son’s excitement at spotting that cahdinul, and my joy in noticing his noticing, has led me to my 2016 New Year’s resolution: to each day really, truly stop and notice something outside. The nature of Drumlin Farm—and of your own backyard, sidewalk, or neighborhood park—gives us endless opportunities to be part of what’s going on outside.

DROP-IN VISITOR EDUCATION PROGRAMSApril 18–September 2

Spring and summer are busy times at Drumlin Farm. Baby animals are being born, crops are being planted, and our naturalists have exciting programs for our visitors. Daily free Visitor Education Programs happen every day to give you the chance to explore and learn about the nature of Massachusetts with our teacher naturalists. Stay as little or as long as you like!

Here are just a few of the things you can see and do every day at Drumlin Farm:• Build a mouse house, climb into the giant bird nest, and crawl through the tunnels of

the Forest Discovery Trail• Walk the Crops Discovery Trail for a beautiful and informative hike around our fields• Visit our new Wildlife Blind out by the deer pen to see what birds are visiting the

feeders• Try a scavenger hunt and receive a prize for finishing!

April showers bring May flowers. Meet some animals that live in our ponds and depend on water as part of their life cycle. Discover who lives in the depths of the pond and catch a glimpse of these fascinating underwater creatures.

STRAWBERRY DAYSaturday, June 18

Celebrate the strawberry harvest with us! Dig in the dirt with our farm staff, meet some berry-loving animals, and pick your own strawberries to take home. Throughout the day, you can enjoy wildlife demos and learn about strawberry pollinators. If weather permits, you can also pick your own strawberries! (while supplies last; additional fee applies)

BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDSSaturday, May 21

What is it about birds that makes them so fascinating? Visit our new Wildlife Blind and practice backyard bird ID with a teacher naturalist. Meet some of our songbirds and raptors. Learn all about feathers and other adaptations birds need to survive and join one of our teacher naturalists on a bird walk.

DISCOVERY DAYS 10 am–4 pm

On Discovery Days, visitors have the chance to explore our seasonal happenings throughout the day. Activities focus on a single theme, experienced through environmental activities based on the season and what’s happening at the farm!

All Discovery Day activities are free with admission or Mass Audubon membership.

APRIL VACATION WEEK | SINGLE-DAY PROGRAMSApril 18–22, 2016

Ages 4–9 | 9 am–1 pm | $50 member; $60 nonmember (per day)

Turn out-of-school time into out-of-doors time! These programs provide fun and educational opportunities for youth during April school vacation week. Sign up by the day. Participants will be grouped by age. Please note: Pre-registration is required for all single-day programs.

FARMERS | Monday, April 18Prepare to get busy with farm chores! Each age group will have a project, whether it’s checking for freshly laid eggs, feeding the sheep and visiting their new lambs, or grooming the pony and mucking his stall. There are always projects in the garden as well. We’ll explore the other barns and enjoy a fresh farm treat!

PREDATORS AND PREY | Wednesday, April 20Explore the food chains of the forests and fields during this animal adventure. Sharp teeth, beaks, and claws are the tools of the predator, while camouflage, sharp senses, and speed help to protect prey in the race for survival. Play games, discover adaptations, and meet predator and prey up close.

ROCK HOUNDS| Thursday, April 21Dive into the geologic past as you dig for bits of granite and quartz. Examine fossils and rocks to discover how they were formed. Learn how our glacial history has shaped the landscape and find out how rocks turn to soil. Meet a creature who lives among the rocks and make a rocky craft to take home.

POLLINATOR POWER| Friday, April 22As the sun warms the earth, plants start to grow and bloom and the insects wake up. Search the woods, fields, or gardens for buds and blooms and find out

what flowers are for. Discover the pollinators who visit our fields, learn the dance of the honeybee, and take a peek in our hives to see what’s buzzing.

COLD-BLOODED | Tuesday, April 19Explore land and water in search of cold-blooded creatures such as frogs, turtles, and salamanders! Drumlin Farm’s ponds are filled with fairy shrimp and other amazing creatures. Grab a net and find crayfish, dragonflies, and other wiggly wet wonders. Search under logs for sowbugs, centipedes, and more!

SPRING TRACKERS | Kindergarten–Grade 1 | Full DayEnjoy full days of making tracks around the farmyard, fields and forests of Drumlin Farm. You’ll participate in farm chores, discover animal habitats, have story time, and enjoy a farm snack. You’ll also meet some of Drumlin Farm’s resident wildlife.

SPRING EXPLORERS | Grades 2–3 | Full DayUncover nature’s mysteries as you explore our ponds, meet local wildlife, and spend time with our farm animals. Learn the secrets of the budding plants as you hike up the drumlin to enjoy the beginning of spring. You’ll also have time to make a nature craft to bring home!

SPRING NATURALISTS | Grades 4–6 | Full DayBecome a naturalist under the instruction of a Drumlin Farm teacher naturalist. You’ll work with wool, identify critters you find in the pond, and even learn about orienteering! Farm chores will also be an exciting a part of each day.

SPRING FARMHANDS | Grades 6–8 | Full DayLearn about the farm’s wild and domestic animals while gaining animal care experience from our wildlife and livestock staff. Help with advanced chores on the farm and with our captive native wildlife. Discover what goes into caring for animals large and small.

EXTENDED-DAY FARM EXPLORATION | Kindergarten–Grade 8Wind down after a busy day with an afternoon of nature crafts, farm chores, and quiet-time activities. Available as an add-on for Four-Day Program participants only. You may attend one or multiple days.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN | Ages 3–5Let’s get cooking! Harvest ripe vegetables from the garden and cook up tasty treats! You’ll learn essential kitchen skills and take home recipes each week. We’ll

collect eggs from our chickens for baking projects and chop veggies from the garden to make a variety of dishes. Become a culinary artist as you make and taste food with seasonal ingredients.

POLLIWOGS AND FROGS | Age 2Listen for spring music in the trees and peek in a pond to see if the polliwogs have hatched. Dig in the garden and plant seeds. Check under a fluffy hen for an egg and feel the soft wool of the sheep. Each week will bring a new adventure!

HAND IN HAND | Ages 3–4Enjoy the magic of planting a seed in the garden and watching it grow. Listen for the chatter of birds back from their winter adventures. Check out the sheep’s spring haircuts. We’ll visit woodland and farm animals, do chores on the farm, and explore nooks and crannies around the sanctuary.

BUSY BEES’ WAX | Ages 3+Beeswax has an incredible number of uses, from art and music to cosmetics and surfing! How do bees make it and how do we get it? Meet our beekeeper

and find out why bees make wax and learn how humans have used it throughout history. We’ll make candles and decorations for you to take home! Limit 2 children per adult.

ST PATTY’S PARTY | All ages Have you ever found a lucky four-leaf clover? Join us for a Saint Patty’s party! We’ll plant some shamrocks, greet a snake, and enjoy delicious colcannon and boxty—traditional Irish potato treats. Perhaps we’ll even dance a jig or two.

EGG-CITEMENT | Ages 2+Celebrate the arrival of spring with an Egg Fest. We will take care of chickens, examine eggs, and use natural materials to dye an egg to take home. Be a “good egg” and create bird nest helpers!

ANIMAL APRIL FOOLS | Ages 2+We will explore the wacky world of animal adaptations from creatures that play dead to birds that tell fibs. We’ll even pretend to be a tricky turtle or a sneaky squirrel! Younger siblings welcome.

AFTERNOON CHORES AND MORE | Ages 4+It’s chore time! We will feed chickens and collect eggs, then bring hay to the sheep, goats, and cows. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a farm-fresh snack. No backpack babies, please.

BARNYARD BRICKS | Ages 4–11Try a new twist on nature play using LEGO bricks. We’ll spark our creativity with design challenges, then head out to study the habitats of Drumlin Farm through the eyes of an engineer. We’ll bring our ideas back into the LEGO lab to make our own creations. No backpack babies, please.

BREAD AND BUTTER | Ages 2+What could be more delicious than fresh bread and butter? We’ll grind the grains, mix the dough, shape the loaf, and bake it in the oven. While the bread is

baking, we’ll visit the cow and shake up some cream to make butter, then spread it on warm bread and enjoy! Younger siblings welcome. No backpack babies, please. Maximum 2 children per adult.

FROGGY NIGHT WALK | Ages 5+Spring is the time for the evening froggy chorus—let’s practice our different frog calls from peep-peep-peeps to banjo twangs. Join us for an evening stroll listening and looking for these nighttime singers. No backpack babies, please.

SOME BUNNY LOVES YOU | All agesHave an up-close visit with a Drumlin Farm rabbit! Why does she have such big feet? Does her nose ever stop wiggling? Explore rabbit hiding places around the sanctuary and plant a rabbit treat. TURTLE TIME | All ages

Discover what these ancient creatures have to teach us. We’ll meet several of New England’s turtles and learn about their habits and habitats. Let’s explore where they live in the ponds, forests, and fields.

THERE’S A GOAT IN THE GARDEN | Ages 2+Join us as we act out this funny folktale and figure out how to keep the garden growing. We’ll take care of the goats and meet the tiny creature that finally got that goat out of the garden.

BOOM-CHICKA-BOOM | All agesWhat happens when you keep an egg warm for 21 days? Peck, peck, peck, and you’ve got a chick! We’ll take care of the hens and roosters, check out the chicks, and have a Chicken Dance Party!

I’M A LITTLE TADPOLE | All agesSpring is the time for frogs (and salamanders!) to lay eggs in pools and ponds. We’ll investigate frogs, listen for their songs, and discover their babies swimming around.

BABY BUGS | All agesLet’s go on a bug hunt and search for caterpillars, grasshopper nymphs, dragonfly naiads, and other insect larvae. Discover which bug babies look like their mothers. We’ll look for butterflies, beetles, and crickets, as well.

SKY DANCE OF THE AMERICAN WOODCOCKTake an evening hike to watch an unusual courtship ritual. The male’s display is a series of bird calls as he prances on the ground before spiraling upward, circling, and drifting down. This spectacle happens in the fields and shrubby wetlands at twilight, and Drumlin Farm is a great place to witness it.

BRING ON THE BIRDSBring the birds to your yard! We will discuss diets, plants that attract birds, and different types of feeders. We will also build edible feeders and take a bird walk around the farm.

MOUNTAIN HIKE | April 23Celebrate spring and the return of warmer weather with a hike up Mount Watatic. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, wildflowers, and signs of spring on this ascent to a scenic summit with views of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

RIVER PADDLE | May 21Canoe down a nearby river and find out which animals inhabit our wetlands. Learn the basics of paddling and practice your team boat-handling skills as you navigate gentle currents. Maybe we will spot an elegant heron or turtles enjoying the sun!

COASTAL EXPLORATION | May 7Explore Cape Ann Peninsula’s tide pools and see waves crashing on the Halibut Point State Park coastline. Climb over rocks to reach the pools, then turn over stones to uncover the creatures of the inter-tidal zone. BAKING BREADLearn how to bake fresh bread for yourself and your friends! Practice each step of the bread making process as we mix, knead, and shape loaves. Learn about yeast and sourdough, then make your own butter to enjoy. Take bread home, along with recipes and baking skills.

PICKLING AND PRESERVINGLearn how to make your own pickles! You can make a wide variety of crispy, tangy fruits and veggies with a simple pickling technique. Harvest vegetables from our fields and gardens and learn how to prepare them and preserve them with fermentation. Leave with a recipe and a jar of pickles that will be ready to eat in a few days.

SUGARING TIMEHike through the woods in search of tracks, scat, and signs of spring as we make our way to the maple grove. Identify a sugar maple tree by looking at twigs, buds, and bark, and experience the sweet taste of sap. Visit the evaporator to learn about ancient and modern ways of boiling sap, and make a snack using Drumlin Farm syrup.

COWS AND CHEESESample homemade cheeses while gaining skills to make your own at home! During this workshop, we will visit the dairy barn to milk the cow, then return to the kitchen to make fresh ricotta and mozzarella. You will leave with samples, recipes, and the confidence you need to pursue one of the oldest forms of food preservation.

SOUTH SHORE HOT SPOTSCumberland Farm Fields, Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary, and Duxbury Beach are some of the locations we will visit in our search to find rough-legged hawks, canvasbacks, snow buntings, purple sandpipers, and many more.

MISSION POSSIBLEYour mission, should you choose to accept it, is to seek out the unusual. We will search for the rarest birds reported during the week from bird watchers’ sources. You never know where we will end up, but it will be a bird adventure!

BIRDS AND BREAKFASTLet’s end our year of birding with a morning bird walk, potluck breakfast, slide shows, and a goodbye to our graduating seniors. Parents and siblings are encouraged to attend.

BIRD-A-THONOver the course of 24 hours, birders throughout the state will join together to find as many bird species as possible in a spirited effort to raise money to protect our state’s birds. The Teen Birders will help lead Drumlin Farm to victory as we look to bring home the winning cup!

WARBLERS 101 | Kathy SeymourMore than 30 species of warblers can be found in Massachusetts during spring migration. With bright, cheerful plumage, they are the highlight of spring birding trips. The classroom session will provide a logical framework for ID and offer tips on making the most of limited views. The Quabbin Reservoir offers a vast wilderness area with a variety of habitats. While focusing on warblers, we’ll also enjoy other birds in the area. The lecture is a great introduction to warblers found on the Machias Seal Island trip, June 3–6 (see page 25 for details).

FALL HAWK MIGRATION | Kathy SeymourHawks provide many ID challenges. Luckily, we can use general shape and behavior to categorize types of hawks. From there, we can use other clues to narrow our ID to species. During the field trip, we’ll travel to the hawk watch on Pack Monadnock in Peterborough, New Hampshire. We’ll practice our new skills in the field and hopefully witness a spectacle of hawks riding the thermals as they make their way south.

HIKING AND BIRDING AT QUABBIN | Strickland WheelockJoin us as we hike deep into Quabbin Reservation to experience the beauty, wilderness, and diversity of birds and habitats. During our hike, we could see the Acadian flycatcher, hooded merganser, and several species of tanagers, grosbeaks, and raptors. This is an excellent opportunity to see our spring migrants in peak color and song, as well as experience the peace and serenity of this wonderful wilderness area.

GREAT BLUE HERON ROOKERY | John Hoye, Audrey McCarthyThe Lyons-Cutler Reservation in Sudbury contains a beautiful variety of habitats, including a great blue heron rookery. Around the swamp, we can see eastern kingbirds, eastern phoebes, red-winged blackbirds, kingfishers, and more. During the hike, we may see several species of warblers, Baltimore orioles, brown thrashers, blue-headed vireos, and migrating flycatchers of various species.

SHOREBIRDS ON THE CAPE | Strickland WheelockSpend a day on the barrier beaches of Cape Cod. These beaches are roosting and feeding grounds for thousands of migrating shorebirds every summer. We’ll learn how to identify these shorebirds by profile, size, and color. Along with a large variety of shorebirds, we’ll study several species of terns, raptors, and jaegers.

SHOREBIRDS AND SWALLOWS AT SUNSET| Kathy SeymourTens of thousands of shorebirds stop to feed on Plum Island’s extensive salt marshes on their way from Arctic breeding grounds to South American wintering grounds. Learn how these birds have adapted to marathon migrations and hone your ID skills. We will also experience the wonder of thousands of swallows swirling in the air before they drop into the marsh to roost for the evening.

MAINE: PUFFINS, AUKS, & BOREAL BIRDSStrickland Wheelock, Kathy Seymour, Tia PinneyWe’ll travel to Machias Seal Island for the awesome puffins, auks, and murres show and explore the boreal forest. We will also visit Deblois Blueberry Barrens, Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, Quoddy Head State Park, and Maine Coast Heritage Trails with the goal of seeing more than 100 bird species. We will explore the boreal forest for boreal chickadee, warblers, vireos, and many more! Our boat trip to the island can yield bald eagles and Arctic terns, among others. We will have an evening outing for saw-whet owls, Wilson’s snipes, and American woodcocks, just to name a few. We often see moose, beavers, and other mammals.

HIMALAYAN SNOWCOCKStrickland Wheelock, Kathy Seymour, Tia PinneyNorthern Nevada is starkly beautiful with snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, high-desert valleys, open meadows, and plenty of wildlife. Our target for this trip is the Himalayan snowcock, which resides only high in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains and in their native Himalayan Mountains. We will hike into their habitat before dawn. As the sun rises over the peaks, we may also see black rosy-finches and mountain goats. On our hike down, we will look for dusky grouse, and mountain bluebird, among other passerines. We will also visit Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and Big Cottonwood Canyon for a plethora of bird species. This trip offers an amazing opportunity to experience one of the most remote and isolated areas in the lower 48 and attempt to find one of the most challenging-to-spot birds in the country.

CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY: FALL MIGRATION PARADISEStrickland Wheelock, Kathy Seymour, Tia PinneyCape May, New Jersey, is well known for exciting birding during spring songbird migration, but the fall season is even arguably more exciting. Where else can you view scores of warblers and other songbirds in the morning, a stream of migrating falcons and accipiters midday, and a dense concentration of shorebirds and waterbirds in the afternoon? We will stop at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge for volumes of waders, ducks, geese, shorebirds, and migrating songbirds. At Cape May, we will visit Higbee Beach and South Cape May Meadows in search of migrating birds of all kinds including yellow-breasted chat, blue grosbeak, red-headed woodpecker, and more. We will check Cape May Point State Park for migrating and kettling hawks. We will revisit the Forsythe refuge to look for gull-billed tern, boat-tailed grackle, and more shorebirds and waders.

RHODE ISLAND WINTER WEEKENDStrickland Wheelock, Kathy Seymour, Tia PinneyRhode Island’s climate and geography make it one of New England’s most productive birding areas in the late fall and winter. During this trip, we will explore scenic coastline, ponds, marshes, and fields. Many species of waterfowl winter along the coast and in the ice-free ponds, rivers, and bays. Large numbers of songbirds migrate into the area during the fall to feed, creating an exciting mixture of passerines, raptors, and seabirds. To add more excitement, a few rarities turn up in Rhode Island each year. Destinations include Watchemoket Cove, Tiverton area fields, “hot spots” in Middletown and Newport, and the rocky coastline of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. On Sunday we will explore Beavertail State Park, Point Judith, and Galilee, as well as fields in Matunuck. We will end our weekend at Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, the premier spot in Rhode Island for ducks including canvasback, redhead, and greater and lesser scaups.

SOUTH TEXAS RARITIESStrickland Wheelock, Kathy Seymour, Tia PinneyAn overlap of distinct habitats and a southern latitude make the Rio Grande Valley among the most biologically diverse areas in the United States. We will encounter some of the best winter birding locations in the US including Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Frontera Audubon, and the Falcon Dam area. Our target species for the trip include the endangered whooping crane, ferruginous pygmy-owl, buff-bellied hummingbird, and long-billed thrasher. Texas specialties, a large number of permanent resident and wintering birds, and spectacular habitats and scenery make the Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande River Valley an incredible place to visit!

Lawns are resource-heavy, requiring irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticides to thrive in our climate. BEEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS | Mel GaddThis 5-session class provides an overview of backyard beekeeping and will cover everything you need to get started in this fascinating and productive hobby.

Topics include a brief history of beekeeping, bee biology, basics of beekeeping, locating hives, and acquiring bees. We will cover all aspects of starting hives and hive management. Whether you are just interested in knowing more about bees and beekeeping or you’d like to harvest your own honey by the fall, this is the class for you.

SMALL-SCALE AGRICULTURE | Robin WilkersonExperience a successful home gardening setup with Robin Wilkerson, a master gardener. Learn about creating a working compost system, preparing a

garden bed, planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, dividing herbs, and pruning blueberries, raspberries, and fruit trees. Robin has also integrated chickens into her a small-scale farm.

SOURDOUGH BREADMAKING | Mimi Palmore, Emma ScudderLearn the age-old tradition of sourdough breadmaking. We will mix, knead, and shape loaves to taste and take home. We’ll discuss the science of

fermentation, which gives sourdough its notable flavor and texture, and the merits of organic, local, and heirloom grains in bread baking. Participants will go home with sourdough starter and the skills to make sourdough bread at home.

NATURALIST WALKS | Tia PinneyThese excursions will focus on observing, exploring, and appreciating the world around us. We’ll cover habitats across the sanctuary from wetlands to uplands as we look for amphibians, reptiles, mammals, flowering plants, trees, shrubs, lichens, fungi, insects, and birds. Each walk will focus on one particular area or habitat as we build our understanding of ecological communities and our mutual interdependence. Preregistration is not available.

CHEESEMAKING: THE NEXT LEVEL | Tia Pinney, Robin StuartIn this workshop, we will explore methods of creating aged cheeses. We will learn about beneficial bacteria, curing, creating a cheese cave, and building

a press. Participants should have some basic cheesemaking experience—participation in Simple Cheesemaking (seepage 27) or an equivalent program, as well as some practice at home, is recommended.

Korea! Fermentation can turn something inedible or difficult to digest into something nourishing and delicious. Learn how to preserve your food using salt, garlic, and spices; sample our Drumlin Farm kimchi; and take home your own fermented project to carry you through the winter months.

PROGRAMS AT THE WILDLIFE SANCTUARYOur on-site programs offer opportunities to investigate the ecology of New England habitats, and the adaptations of animals and plants that live here. While students are out exploring, they have opportunities to use scientific tools, make observations, and experience real science in the field.

HOMESCHOOL PROGRAMSOur homeschool programs are designed to encourage children to interact with nature through hands-on exploration and science-based learning, and with each other through group building and games. Programs can take place at our wildlife sanctuary or at a location near you. Please sign up as a group.

SCOUT PROGRAMSWe offer programs for all levels of Girl and Boy Scouts. Our programs help Scouts gain an appreciation and awareness of nature while learning responsibility toward themselves, their peers, and their community.

PROGRAMS AT YOUR SCHOOLDrumlin Farm’s outreach program brings our teacher-naturalists to your school. Programs may include bringing native wildlife into the classroom or guided exploration of natural areas near your school. These experiences offer insight into unique adaptations and habitat needs of many Massachusetts species. Our programs enrich natural history and science lessons and help build connections to the local environment.

TEACHER WORKSHOPSDrumlin Farm offers professional development opportunities for teachers at your site or at our wildlife sanctuary. In our workshops, we explore local habitats to learn about ecological principles, local habitats, and species identification, and how to teach these lessons in the classroom through a hands-on, and inquiry-driven approach. We are a DOE-approved PDP provider and offer year-round science education courses to classroom teachers.

DRUMLIN FARM COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL

DAILY CURRICULUMOutdoor Play in Nature: Children have the opportunity to play, use their imagination, and interact with one another while also exploring the changing landscape and various habitats around the sanctuary.

Farm Chores: Feeding the farm animals, milking the cow, collecting eggs, and grooming the pony teach children about life cycles and cooperation with each other and nature.

Wildlife Sanctuary Explorations: Familiar habitat landmarks observed during the changing seasons infuse an emotional connection to the outdoors and provide a sense of discovery.

Wildlife Visits: Guided by staff, children learn about the appearance, behavior, habitat, and adaptations of our resident reptiles, birds, and small mammals.

Planting and Harvesting: Children are involved in the life cycle of growing food on the farm—from planting to harvesting and tasting. Along with these hands-on experiences, they also learning about farming, soil, water, and plants.

STAFFEach class is taught by highly qualified early childhood educators who are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. The maximum class size is15 students. Staff-to-child ratio is 1:5.

HISTORYDrumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary has been offering educational programs for young children for more than 40 years. Drumlin Farm Community Preschool has been licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care since 2008.

Drumlin Farm Camp has provided children with memorable experiences in nature for morethan 60 years. Campers ages 4–18 make new friends as they learn about nature and farmingthrough hands-on activities, trail explorations, animal interactions, games, and more! We have three locations, each with programs led by trained counselors and teacher naturalists.


WILDWOOD CAMPA Mass Audubon Camp for Outdoor Exploration

Are you looking for an overnight camp experience? Located on the shores of picturesque Hubbard Pond in southern New Hampshire, Wildwood is a camp like no other! Campers ages 9–17 have fun as they explore the outdoors, make friends, and develop self-confidence and leadership skills that last a lifetime. Wildwood Camp offers overnight sessions, family camp, leadership-in-training, and teen adventures!

DRUMLIN FARM WILDLIFE SANCTUARYLocated in Lincoln, Drumlin Farm has three different on-site camp programs to choose from: Nature Camp, Farm Camp, and Mini Camp.

ASSABET RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGEOur Assabet Camp offers three-day nature-based programs for campers entering Pre-K–Grade 6. Camp is located at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury.

WOLBACH FARMOur Wolbach Camp offers three- and five-day programs for campers Pre-K–Grade 3. Camp is located at Wolbach Farm in Sudbury, headquarters of the Sudbury Valley Trustees.

LANDSCAPES FOR LEARNING UPDATE

COMPLETE: THE GREEN BARNThe Green Barn’s newly built addition houses two sunlit classrooms where family classes, summer camp, and adult education programs take place. The Green Barn is also now home to our new state-of-the-art root cellar, where the crops team is storing vegetables for the winter in ideal conditions for CSA members and restaurant partners. These improvements were made possible by significant grants from the Amelia Peabody Charitable Fund and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources.

COMPLETE: WILDLIFE BLINDThis new addition to the sanctuary provides people of all ages and sizes with a place to observe wildlife. Narrow openings at different heights allow visitors to watch birds and mammals up close. We are grateful to the General William Mayer Foundation for its support of this project, Shire Pharmaceuticals for providing volunteer labor and funds for the plantings, and to the family of Kip Farris, who made generous donations in his memory to create this special place that he would have loved.

CRITICAL GOAL: DRUMLIN FARM EDUCATION CENTERAt the heart of the Landscapes for Learning Campaign is the construction of a new building to support our core mission: providing educational experiences that connect people to nature and foster environmental literacy both at the sanctuary and in schools and communities across our region. Our camps, nature preschool, out-of-school programs, and professional development for public schoolteachers are all at capacity, and our current education building is woefully inadequate. We need a facility to support our growing programs, where we can foster the collaboration and innovation that is a hallmark of Drumlin Farm and Mass Audubon science education. Initial estimates place the price tag at just over $2 million. Generous lead donors have contributed half this amount, and we need to raise the rest by the end of 2016.

ONGOING: MAKING DRUMLIN FARM A PLACE FOR EVERYONEOne of the principal objectives of Landscapes for Learning is expanding Drumlin Farm’s role as a place where people of all backgrounds and abilities are able to connect with the natural world. Over the past several years, we have removed physical barriers and created new multi-sensory nature experiences that are accessible to a broader population. We have established a Special Education Coordinator position to deepen our programs for people with a range of abilities and challenges. Our endowment and operating funding for programs that support the diversity of the Drumlin Farm community are growing, thanks to the many generous donors who have invested in this initiative.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: NEW ENGLAND WILDLIFE EXPLORATIONSConstruction has recently begun on our newest wildlife exhibit. This interactive exhibit will highlight the native animals that thrive where the forest meets the field. Our red fox will have more room to roam, and a “fox-cam” will allow visitors to peek at his nocturnal activity. There will also be a child-sized den, where visitors will get an up-close look into the fox habitat. This exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, the Ogden Codman Trust, the General William Mayer Foundation, and major gifts from dozens of generous donors.

THINGS TO KNOW- Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary is a dynamic environment. We may make changes to the program to take advantage of new opportunities or to ensure the safety of the visitors and the animals we care for.- Preregistration is required for all programs unless otherwise noted- Register early to prevent program cancellation due to low enrollment- On the first day of each class, please check in at the Visitor Services window at the Nature Center to find out where your class will be meeting- Dress comfortably- In programs with a farm-to-food connection, snacks from the farm may be incorporated. Please let us know if program participants have food allergies prior to the start of the program

PLEASE NOTE: Online registration may be faster when we’re especially busy. Payment in full is due at the time of registration, with the exception of some off-site trips. Confirmation and any further information regarding your registration will be sent by email or mail. Please read your confirmation letter carefully to make sure all information is correct and take note of the special instructions and directions section for links to further information pertaining to your program.

Filled Courses/Wait List: If the program of your choice is full, you will be placed on a wait list. If you do not wish to remain on the wait list, please notify the Registrar. If space becomes available, we will notify you at least 24 hours in advance of the class.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: To receive a course refund, you must notify the Registrar at 781-259-2206 at least one week prior to the first class meeting. Fees will be forfeited for late cancellations. Drumlin Farm reserves the right to change programs, schedules, and instructors, and to cancel classes due to low enrollment. A full refund will be issued if Drumlin Farm cancels the program. There are no refunds for special events.

Weather: All on-site programs run rain, shine, or light snow. For off-site programs or in case of extreme weather, call 781-259-2200, press 2 then 3, and listen to a recorded message listing any cancelled programs. For programs that list a rain or cloud date, we recommend that you hold the alternate date open. No refunds will be given if the class is switched to its alternate date and you are unable to attend.

DIRECTIONS TO DRUMLIN FARMDriving: Drumlin Farm is on Rt 117 in Lincoln. The entrance is 4.5 miles west of the Rt 117 overpass at Rt 128 and 0.5 miles east of the intersection of Rtes 117 and 126. Look for the Drumlin Farm sign and entrance on the south side of Rt 117.

Public Transportation: Take the Fitchburg line from Boston’s North Station to Lincoln Station. Walk south (away from the Shopping Center) two blocks south on Lincoln Rd to the intersection with Rt 117. Cross Rt 117, turn left, and walk on the paved path that leads into Drumlin Farm. Follow the paved path to the Nature Center to check in.Visit MBTA.com for scheduling and maps
