Prior to it’s completion, men and coal were slung across the river on a cable. The mine has long since closed, leaving only slag heaps to give evidence to the activity that once existed across the river. Warning: The coal in the slag heaps has been smouldering for years. DO NOT approach smoking coal or climb slag heaps. A thin black crust may hide coal or burned out caverns underneath. This canyon, which natives believed to be haunted, is one of the most exciting features of the area, especially for the avid hiker. During wet weather, the soils forming the slopes of the canyon walls become extremely slippery so hiking should be limited to dry weather. TWO SPECTACULAR DRIVES The Drumheller Valley has two scenic loops, each with its own features and facilities. LOOP 1 - North Dinosaur Trail - Bleriot Ferry - South Dinosaur Trail This loop, approximately 60 km long, starts and ends in Drumheller. You will visit breathtaking views, attractive campgrounds, and other points of interest. Before you go check with the tourist information centre for road conditions and the hours of the Bleriot Ferry. LOOP 2 - Highway 10X - Secondary Highway 569 - Highway 10 This second loop, also approximately 60 km long, starts and ends in Rosedale. Leaving Rosedale, Highway 10X will take you to the Hamlet of Wayne. This stretch of highway features 11 narrow bridges criss-crossing the Rosebud River. At Wayne, the highway ends and to continue, you must use one of either two fairly steep gravel roads. Both of these gravel roads lead you to Highway 56, which will return you to Drumheller. If you continue, Secondary Highway 569 (gravel), east from Dalum will take you to East Coulee. From here, the loop follows Highway 10 back to Rosedale. World’s Largest Dinosaur

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by mil-lions of years of erosion by wind and water.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

The valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed a notorious reputation as a highrolling boomtown with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the valley turned to other things.

Today, the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture, government services, oil and gas, and tourism for its economic prosperity.

Newcastle Park:

Set on the banks of the Red Deer River, this attractive park has a beach and walking trails, baseball diamonds, a camp kitchen and picnic tables.

Bicycle/Walking Trails

Ride your bike or walk the scenic trail system that follows the Red Deer River.

Midland Provincial Park:On the north side of the North Dinosaur Trail, self-guided walking trails lead to the former site of Midland #1 mine, closed in 1940. The former mine office and kiosks with a display of photographs provide information about the coal industry.

McMullen Island:Day use area on the south side of the Trail features picnic facilities and walkways through lush vegetation -- rare in the hot, dry climate of the badlands.

Nature Trail:A hiking trail along the scenic Red Deer River gives an excellent view of the unique geological formations and wildlife in the Valley.

Kinsmen Park:

A shady park with a fitness trail, a rock garden and a playground.
