DRUKGYELLOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL
2015 DFC “STORY OF CHANGE”
“MASS CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN &
‘PET’ BOTTLE COLLECTION COMPETITION”
FEEL
At Drukgyel School, we FELT a lot of PROBLEMS, but the one we felt the most bothered by was WASTE. Here’s why:
* That the community was not segregating its waste bothered us. * That only a few people are really concerned about the waste problem
bothered us. * That waste is usually dumped at night bothered us.
* That some people were coming up with waste management solutions and trying their best, while other people were just dumping their waste bothered us.
Plastic wrappers, paper, pet bottles are dumped everywhere.
FEEL
Our school is the most affected, as most of our
students have to clean up the waste every time. Our community is in a semi-urban area, where
there are around 200 households, with around 1,000 people residing there.
USING OLD TIRES IN A NEW WAY
IMAGINE We began to IMAGINE some SOLUTIONS to our problems:
* Make the public more aware of our waste problem
* Segregate our waste
* Collect & recycle PET bottles and help the needy with the money earned.
* Do a 'Mass Clean-Up Campaign' and a 'PET Bottle Collection Competition', since they were the things that the community could do the best.
COLLECTING ‘PET’ BOTTLES FOR RECYCLING
DOTo DO our SOLUTIONS, we did the following:
* We divided the children into groups and did a door-to-door campaign on waste segregation.
* Some groups collected PET bottles; some collected plastics; and some collected papers and other wastes.
* Some groups also cleaned the stream we have near the school. * Our PET bottle collection competition took place among the classes, with around 16
sections, from grade 3 to 8 participating.
* We have collected two truckloads of PET bottles so far, and sold them to the recycling agency.

SHARE
A group of volunteers was formed that included both teachers and students.
The group thought of ways to disseminate information about the need for a clean community to the community.
SHARE
We decided on having a monthly “Green Day”, on which students will not be allowed to bring packaged food; we will have a plastic collection competition, and award prizes to the most successful teams; we will sell the collected plastics to the recycling company.
SHARE
• Most important of all, teachers and students have teamed up to go around the community conducting the clean-up campaign and creating awareness on waste management.
