An effective presentation: focuses on a single message. is organized, with a well-ordered, clear sequence Supported by graphics on the slides (i.e., use text sparingly

on the PowerPoint).will be understood by an audience of differing background

(colleagues from the field, as well as “outsiders”).

Introduce yourself and your affiliation/institution

Establish with the audience whether you welcome questions during the presentation, or prefer to answer all questions at the end.

Do not stand front of your presentation slides

DO NOT READ FROM THE SLIDES! Speak clearly and loudly enough toward the

audience, not toward the projection screen. Pace yourself. Be ready to entertain questions at the end,

and allow time for it.

Use the image editing options in PowerPoint to fullyintegrate imported images into your poster.

Contrasting background colors on images are distracting:get rid of them by setting them to “transparent”.

Improve clarity by dropping brightness and increasingcontrast.

Simple background is best if you have a substantial number of images/ graphs/ tables to show. Avoid distractions! An eye-popping background image is almost always distracting. Use with caution!

Using someone else’s images without their permission is a copyright infraction. Proprietary images often have watermarks, but not always.Always provide credit/citation for images/information used.

Low resolution images may look great on a computer screen, but become horribly pixelated and blocky when enlarged and projected. Always select the highest quality images you can.Avoid jpg or jpeg files, especially if they are <3-4 MB in size.
