DROUGHT RESPONSE WEEKLY UPDATE SOMALIA/SOMALILAND Update No. 28 11 - 18 th Oct. 2017 Situation Updates Somaliland Cases of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) have drastically increased particularly in Borama, Awdal region. 58 cases of AWD were recorded from government hospitals and private MCHs. The increase, has been attributed to the recent rain pounding the region. In response the medical team has started distribution of medical supplies to Borama regional hospitals. As of 18th October, the health cluster team reported that there are a total of 4,362 suspected cases of measles in Somaliland alone. Of the total cases, Togdheer accounts 50% followed closely by Sool and W. Galbeed. Central and South Somalia According to JIRA report, influx of IDPs into various IDP camps is on the rise. 45 households arrived in IDP camps in Dhobley town, 70 households in Edkiyaal and 50 households in Duceysane IDP camp. IOM/ DTM report also indicated that, in the last three months a total of 1,719 IDPs arrived in Baidoa IDP camps with only 76 IDPs exiting the camps. As the number of IDPs increase in various IDP camps, food insecurity still remains high. There is also an increase in the number of separated and vulnerable children. Unlike other areas that have received good Deyr rains, regions such as; Diif and Dhobley did not receive any rain. Communities living in these two areas are facing critical water shortage problems. Situation Updates

SomalilandCases of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) have drastically increased particularly in Borama, Awdal region. 58 cases of AWD were recorded from government hospitals and private MCHs. Sector overview

Health and Nutrition: During the reporting period a total of 12,454 patients were screened, and 13,851 provided with medical consultation and treated for common diseases in various health facilities- both fixed and mobile health centres- across Somaliland, Puntland and, Central and South Somalia.

Out the total screened patients, 790 cases presented SAM and were admitted into OTP programme while 1,799 who presented MAM admitted into TSFP programme. Patients admitted into OTP and TSFP programmes were provided with RUTF and RUSF rations respectively, with children below the age of five years provided with vitamin A supplement and, Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW) given micro-nutrient and Folic acid supplements.

Statistics for those treated for common diseases include; 24 cases treated for malaria, 317-Diarrhoea, 1086-Pneumonia, 1,771-Vit. A vaccination, 1269-ANC services, 309-AWD, 935-Measles Vaccination, and Pent 1 & 3 vaccination-1042 & 539 respectively.

1,074 individuals (including PLWs, Men & WCBA) were also provided with breastfeeding counseling, hygiene promotion and health education sessions both at individual and group level.

Education: In Baidoa, three IDP schools (Kormari , Liban and ADC2) under Pooled Fund project and, 4 other schools under MFA project benefited from distribution of learning materials (Textbooks). The schools are now fully equipped with all the necessary teaching and learning materials.

24 teachers and 33 CEC members participated in the child protection referral mechanisms training aimed at streamlining child abuse reporting mechanism.

Two schools in Awdal region (Fadhi xun & Qol-ujeed) received cooking equipment, water storage and, hand-washing facilities.

22 trucks of water were delivered to 22 supported schools in Nugal, Karkaar and Mudug regions. Seven new schools in the same region also received recreational equipment.

WASH: 8,000 litres of water delivered to five villages in Awdal district reaching 3,924 beneficiaries of the new emergency water trucking programme. Elsewhere, 944m3 of water was also distributed to 2,100 households in El-afwayn district.

A five-day water management committee training for 18 members from nine different villages in El-afwayn district kicked off in Burao. The training focused on the operation and maintenance of water facilities, water chlorination, and proper methods of cleaning water sources.

500 people (410 students and 90 caregivers of malnourished children <5yrs) benefited from soap distribution exercise in IDP camps and schools. Each person received one bar of soap weighing 800 grammes. Construction activities of six medical incinerators in six health and nutrition centers in Awdal district is now at 85% complete.

FSL: Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWS) training is ongoing in Boon village. The essence of the training is to equip workers with basics of livestock health and treatment. Two Ministry of Labor staff are facilitating the training.

1,000 households from Dinsoor and 700 other agricultural practicing households from Baidoa registered to receive agricultural input kits. Each kit contains 20kg of sorghum, 10 kg of Maize, 5 kg of cow-peas, one axe and two hoes

Child Protection: 300 children participated in the ongoing weekly child resilience workshops conducted in Burao, Oodweyne, Ainabo, Gabiley, Buhoodle, Lasanod, Yagoori and El-afweyne.

Save the Children Donates Medical Supplies to Blast Victims inMogadishu, SomaliaSave the Children donated medical supplies worth $50,000 USD to victims of a car bomb explosion that occured on Saturday, 14th October 2017 in Somalia capital, Mogadishu. The explosion occured in a very busy junction of Soobe near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs killing over 300 people and leaving hundreds injured.

The medical supplies- donated by the British people through UKaid and German government through Federal Foreign Office (FFO)- will help hundreds of people directly affected by the tragic event access basic lifesaving healthcare support. Save the Children is thankful to Ukaid and German FFO for their generous support.

The devastating explosion is believed to be one of biggest in Somalia’s history.
