Early Action and Early Recovery

Failure to take early action will result in significant

consequences similar to 2005/2006

Our Past Experience

Kenya Red Cross has been working with communities

to decrease their vulnerabilities

(Ukambani in 2009 and 2010) to increase food

production

Takaba project:

The Impact:

� This year, despite the dry spell, no major water trucking has been carried out in Takaba – the community is more water secure. No incidence of diarrheal disease incidence outbreak reported inspiteof the droughts

Rhamu Hydrowater project:

The Problem:

• Rhamu is a division in Mandera and has been faced with a problem of cyclical floods which affect farms and poor farming practices - food insecurity despite having fertile land & adequate having fertile land & adequate water

The Intervention:

• Construction of 2Km gabion flood control gabion, Training and support of farmers with farming inputs, seeds, extension services & pump sets .

• Total budget: approx Kshs.70 million

The Impact:

� Floods are better controlled –delayed onset of flooding

� Opening up of new farm lands through reclamation

� Farming produce and yield have grown significantly

� Area is now food secure

The Problem:

� Tana River is an ASAL district and is food insecure, despite having one of Kenya’s few permanent rivers flowing through it and relatively fertile soils

� The district is dependant on relief food and classified as poor

and classified as poor

The Intervention:

� Distribution of high quality farm implements, high quality seed, farm tilling and extension services

� Construction of water facilities and hygiene promotion

� Total budget: approx Kshs.47 million

The Impact:

� Pastoralists have taken up farming and are growing staple as well as high income earning foods

Tana River Drought Recovery project:

� These communities are now food secure and have additional sources of income, and not relied on food aid
